Help Indian student trying to convince my parents to let me do my undergrad in Australia — would anyone studying there be willing to talk to them?

I’m an Indian student who has been offered the opportunity to study an undergraduate degree in Australia, but I’m having a really difficult time convincing my parents to let me go.

My parents are financially capable of paying for my tuition and living expenses, so money itself isn’t the main issue. Their argument is that studying in Australia simply isn’t worth the money, especially compared with staying in India.

Their preferred option is basically:

The problem is that I don’t want to study law. I already have a clear idea of the kind of career I want, and I believe studying in Australia would give me better exposure and opportunities for what I actually want to do.

A few things that make the Australian option considerably more affordable for me:

  • I currently have a AUD $20,000 scholarship.
  • I may also be eligible for an additional AUD $15,000 scholarship.
  • Because of credit transfer from my previous studies, I should be able to complete what is normally a 3-year degree in approximately 2 years.
  • My parents can afford the tuition without putting themselves into serious financial difficulty.

Despite all of this, their position is basically: “Australia is not worth it. You can get a degree in India.”

I understand where they're coming from. They're my parents, and they're worried about spending a large amount of money and sending me to another country. But I'm struggling to explain to them why this isn't simply a case of “Australian degree = expensive version of an Indian degree.”

So I'm looking for people who are currently studying undergraduate degrees in Australia, especially international students or Indians who made a similar decision.

If you're willing, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing about:

  • Whether you think studying in Australia was worth the money
  • What opportunities you've actually gotten from studying there
  • Internships / part-time work / networking opportunities
  • How Australian universities compare with Indian universities in your experience
  • What the transition was actually like
  • Whether you think the cost is justified
  • What you wish you knew before coming
  • And, importantly, whether you'd make the same decision again

Even better, if someone is comfortable with it, I'd love for you to speak directly with my parents (call/WhatsApp/Discord/whatever you're comfortable with) and explain your experience to them.

I'm not looking for people to blindly tell them “Australia is amazing, send your son.” If you think it's a bad financial decision, tell me that too. I want real experiences from people actually studying there, because my parents aren't convinced by university websites or education agents.

If you're willing to talk, please comment or DM me. I'd genuinely appreciate it.

Help Macquarie Uni OR UNI of Wollongong? MS in Information Systems.

Im in between selecting my uni for masters in information systems as both of the uni offers it exact course im looking for (i.e bridge between management & IT).

Both the uni are has about exact fees of around 75k to 80k AUD for complete 2 years course.

As im not into having social life - ill be out to grind as coming here is like looking into a long term settlement goals as seeing Mac Uni would cost be higher side on living as compared to Wollongong.

Would really helpful from students and pep's to hear from about their opinions!

Help Finances overdue?

Hi, I'm in my second semester of uni and I did the forms for HEC's help in my first semester. I've just checked my finances page and it says all my classes are overdue - census date? I also did a new SSAF help form but that now just says overdue?

Is this just a delay for the forms or am I really screwed? I thought they would've at least contacted me if there was an issue with payment

General Question COGS3020, COGS3030, COGS3040

Hi all,

I'm choosing between the units mentioned in the title and wanted to ask if anyone had done them and how they found them.

COGS3020 - Computational Neuroscience

COGS3030 - Human Neuroimaging

COGS3040 - Space and time in the Brain

I wanted to know what the workloads are like, anything you found particularly interesting about the units, how they were taught and how well you felt they were taught, and any other useful information.

Thanks!

Hey everyone, my marks for year 11 were:

Maths STD - B

English EALD - B

Music 1 - A

Software Engineering - B

Physics - D

Economics - C

My preferences were:

  1. Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

  2. Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with a specialisation in Software Engineering

  3. Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Information Technology

  4. Bachelor of Game Design and Development

  5. Bachelor of Information Technology

My leadership activities was being Captain of the Creative arts council, Assistant/Mentor at a code camp for primary to high schoolers, and starting a rock band in Year 11 doing performances around the area.

I'm worried about not getting my top preferences, what are the odds I do..?

AM I COOKED?

General Question Leganto links not working?

Is anyone else having trouble with Leganto readings? ILearn and Leganto itself are working fine for me but every time I press on a unit reading it doesn’t work and says “this site can’t be reached” and “check if there is a typo”. It’s been doing this since last night and and I tried on my phone too and it’s also not working there 😀

Degree Question Master of Crim and Laws Double Degree

Hello! I just wanted to see if anyone had any info or advice on doing a double masters for criminology and laws? I am coming from psych as I honestly just give up on the competition (and the fact that students enrolling now get accepted into entire pathway 🫠). I always wanted to work in the criminal/forensic field anyway and know I can come back to studies later if I want to.

Anyway! Is the degree particularly challenging? I know it obviously will be but coming from someone with no law background but 8 criminology units, will I be able to cope with the change?

Brutal honesty welcome and appreciated!

ANNOUNCEMENT Job Advert posted earlier today

To anyone that interacted with the job advert (survey on campus) advert earlier today.

Please be mindful that person who posted that advert.
They could be a scammer, a religious group, a pervert, or anything else but a genuine opportunity.

We do not allow people to post job adverts here (some will get through because we cant be here 24/7).

We have this rule to protect students.

If you are looking for work, please use trusted online sources like seek, or even the uni's own employment service.

This at a minimum ensures that the employer has been checked that they are a real business and pay correct wages etc.

When I banned that user account for breaking our rules around Spam - They responded in a manner that seemed likely they do not have students best interests at heart.

Can I suggest that you use caution if you plan to or have interacted with that person today.

Do not share your personal information, do not offer your banking information. If you still want to talk to this person about the opportunity, can I suggest that you do not meet this person in a private location - choose a public space where you can be seen by others or can get help from cafe staff, food court security or similar.

If you run into any issues please report it to the police.
