Is something wrong?

Hello everyone, I’m working on a project for a coworker and I was running a test run and I feel like my machine is acting weird but I’m not sure because I’m new to this. It’s their jacket that is a fleece material. I’m using a 4x4 hoop so any advice on how to improve the lettering so it’s not lost in the material is appreciated.

Items used:
Fleece from Amazon
40wt thread I think new brothread
Cut away stabilizer
Water soluble stabilizer on top
90wt prewound bobbin
90/14 needle (gold tip came with my machine)
Machine is brother se700
I have embrillance software

My machine wasn’t cutting the last time I used it and I think I fixed it because it cut this time. But any advice is appreciated.Thank you!

😱 Why are you "floating" the fabric on top of the hooped stabaliser? Especially when the piece of fabric is clearly big enough to hoop properly. 🫣

Hoop your water soluble film and fabric together with at least two layers of cutaway. You will have to open up the adjustment screw on the hoop to allow for the extra thickness of all the layers.

This is what hooping really means and will produce a vastly better outcome. No glue or pins required. Just the friction fit mechanism of the hoop holding it all together.

Sometimes there may be a hooping mark left on the fabric but this can be easily removed with a wipe with a clean cloth that is damp with water. The moisture in the cloth relaxes the compressed fibres and the mark disappears.

Agreed on all points but OP may also want to increase the size of this lettering, it’s very small especially for the fleece. I prefer a zig zag underlay for fleece, it’s very helpful and I’d skip the solvy on top as I don’t find it particularly helpful.

I would consider running it with the swing on 2, but I don’t know if that’s a setting on this type of machine.

Yes that’s the problem I’m having with the font because I don’t want it getting lost in the fabric. I tried it on my family members jacket and it looked a little off because some of the lines sunk into it. But I’ll switch the underlay to fleece!

I’m sorry I’m not sure what the swing is. Is that like the tension? Mine is set to 4

No it’s not the tension, don’t mess with that. Swing it’s a way to adjust the width of the columns but I’ve only used a commercial machine so I’m not sure it exists on a home machine.

What works quite well for small lettering and does away with the solvey completely, is to create a wide fill background behind the lettering. It doesn't have to be as solid as normal background fill. It just needs to be enough to flatten the fleace for the text to stitch on top.

I have essentials so sadly I can't do the wide fill background. I figured if I got deeper into embroidery I would buy it. Cause I thought essentials would be like a little of everything I would need

Can you run multiple zig zag underlays? I use a different program so I’m not sure. I would honestly just make it bigger, aim for about 1/2” height and as wide as possible in your hoop. Also, check your spacing- I do a lot of names for hospitals so I assume Amanda is a BSN RN, definitely add more space as it’s a bit of a jumble in your samples.

There is more to it than just the name I just didn’t stitch those out but I did enlarge the height and the width is as far as I can. I did move them because I thought they looked jumbled too.

A work around is to borrow a suitable background from another design and reshape for your requirements. This background is stiched as 'tone on tone' - the same colour of the garment so it disappears, and the lettering on top looks fabulous cos it's no longer competing with the fluff.

Tbh I was using the floating technique because that’s what I seen everyone else doing. I’m basically using YouTube to teach me because I don’t know anyone who embroiders. But I will definitely try the proper technique.

The "floating fabric" method has it's place for very small projects or delicate fabrics, or as a work around for getting a logo onto a Dad hat or floppy bucket hat. But for the usual scope of embroidery work, It's recommended to hoop properly.

It's my observation that domestic hobby embroidery is flooded with materials and products that really are not required but people are being shown methods to justify the purchase.

What I find interesting, is that embroidery machine hoops are much the same as the hoops used in hand embroidery. Same technology. With that in mind, the only time you would "float fabric" onto the hand embroidery hoop would be for an appliqué addition to a project. It makes little sense therefore, to use the "float fabric" technique for all hand embroidery projects, or machine ones either.

I also think it's important to have a clear distinction between "float fabric" and "float" because in commercial embroidery, "float" means to shift the pantograph through a design without stitching.

I’m new to embroidery myself, but I think your needle may be wrong? My understanding is that embroidery requires a 75/11 needle. Somebody with more experience can definitely correct me if I’m wrong, but this is what the very nice lady at the craft store told me

The 75/11 is stock standard for machine embroidery. There are sharps and blunts, but sharp are generally used commercially because they go through anything, including hard seams on caps.

Okay so to clarify, does that mean I could use a regular sewing machine needle in my embroidery machine?

Use embrilliance and increase the lettering size for left chest you want it about 3.5 inches in width . Use a cutaway under and a water soluble on top and hoop all. Do not float

My friend I would like to suggest you that as we can see your design is stretching out so you can use two to three stablizer in alternate direction and before running please make sure the fabric is tight in the frame ,it will definitely solve your problem..

My brother SE700 hates 90wt bobbin but works great with 60wt bobbin…maybe try swapping your bobbin to see if things improve.
