Discussion EMNLP26 Cost [D]

What is up with the EMNLP prices? What is the actual price for attending as a student with one accepted paper? If I register now in August, is it $350 or $550? Congratulations to everyone accepted!

If you are presenting, it is 550 USD. If a co-author presents, it is 350 USD. Hint: noone checks who is really presenting.

Each accepted paper needs to have one registered presenter at least, regardless of if anyone or no one actually presents it. Without paying the $550 the paper itself won't be put in the proceedings.

Yes, you are right. one senior author can cover many papers, though.

Yeah... they are already so poor that they can't pay the reviewers. And the poor sponsor companies couldn't afford to pay more either, they have to think about shareholder value, and they are all barely making any profits.

EMNLP is non profit. There are no shareholders. The organizers don't get paid anything, it's all volunteer work. The extra money made by the conference is used as emergency float money for the next year conference. All respectable conferences are like this.

Why don't they get more sponsorship money? The big AI venues can/could ask a lot...

They get tons of sponsorship money but it doesn't go to their pockets. The sponsorship money is used to fund the conference. They usually show the budgets in the location proposals. The sponsorship money is counted on to help pay for the venue. That's part of what the emergency float is for. If there is less sponsorship money one year, the the float is used.

I read your original comment wrong. You meant the sponsors' shareholders, not EMNLP.

EMNLP and other conferences get lots of sponsorship money. Usually, there are tiers that range between $1k-$100k. EMNLP probably gets $500k in sponsor money, and it's already much more than what's collected by attendance fees.

It would probably be difficult to squeeze more out of the same AI companies because there are tons of AI conferences to sponsor.

Only for good reasons like your visa was not approved or something happened and you could absolutely not make it.

The thing about the visa is on the second link however it sounds weird to me that I couldn’t find anything about reasons why to do it virtually or how do they evaluate whether you should be in person or virtually. Also, if One does the presentation virtually, it would have to be an oral not a poster I would assume so…How is it determined if a person wants to do their presentation virtually wouldn’t that automatically mean they reserve the time-slots for presentations?

My conclusion is I am going in person because I want the free trip hehehe, as per the requirements for virtual not sure yet.

I discuss w/ gpt and it said student w/ one paper presented should pay 750 bucks Not sure whether it is bluffing

That is true. It’s this registration 550 and the 200 extra for the paper. That should be the total cost if you have one paper.

What about the ACL membership, do you have to buy one on top of the conference fees or is it included?

Yes it’s $50 for students
