I don't really have experience stacking yet, but I'm pretty happy with how easy Macro Studio is to use. The main issues I noticed came down to the subject moving, but I could be missing other problems that the more well established softwares handle better.

In the end I was happy to try out Macro Studio because of the price, the creator's apparent enthusiasm to improve, and the ease of use.

Has anyone else been trying this software out with larger stacks that have opinions?

Hi there! I hope you like my pictures. I was a bit worried about posting them because I’m a complete beginner at macro photography.

These pictures were taken with a Samsung S25 using Expert RAW mode. All of the animals were found nearby my home.

Please let me know what you think of them! I’m about to make the jump to my first proper camera, a Sony A6700, so I hope to post some better pictures in the future once I get the new camera.

Quite pleased with the results, especially considering it was a windy day! This is a stack of 20 images shot handheld with natural lighting and then combined in Helicon Focus. The hardest part of it all was finding subjects that would sit still! I’ll have to get some more practice in soon.

Taken with a Sony a7V using the Sony 90mm macro lens.

I learned photography as a kid (full manual film). I was always frustrated that my prefered subjects were not possible with the lenses available. This week I decided to start again. Picked up some secondhand gear and started to learn the photography basics again. Plus all the cool features on this new camera.

Thought that would be a good combination. But in the meantime I learned that the G9 can't focus bracket when a flash is attached. Pretty lame. But apparently it can be avoided by using the flash via the PC port. Still love the camera and the lens though. Pictures came out pretty well for a first try. I'm especially stoked that the hummingbird moth shot kind of succeeded. I didn't get much opportunities to make adjustments with that one and got the lucky shot with the (mostly) frozen motion.

I guess I'm going to need a diffuser and I need to learn how to make focus brackets without swaying around so much (all my stacks failed so far). Maybe it's easier if I can use flash and higher shutterspeed?

These fine subjects were briefly motionless on the patio handrail, so I tried to stabilize my often-unstable hands against it and capture this robber fly while it was putting a serious hurtin' on the spotted lanternfly.

And how about that little bugger hitching a ride on its eye?!

My first day taking out my new Sony 100mm Macro lens. Feeling very blessed and fulfilled being able to photograph such incredible macro subjects at my most beloved forest. My life has come full circle. From lifting rocks and logs to find bugs at 4 years old, to taking photos of slime molds, insects, and mushrooms at 34 years old. It doesn’t get much better than this. Recently, I found joy shooting with an old PowerShot A560, and I am thinking of buying my very first interchangeable lens camera.

The PowerShot A560 is surprisingly good at capturing insects with its macro mode, although it lacks fine detail and requires a lot of cropping to get a close-up shot. Furthermore, smaller insects like mosquitoes are impossible to capture well.

I have a very limited selection of macro lenses locally, and ordering them from abroad would cost an arm and a leg. I wish I could just buy any camera I like and use extension tubes, but I am afraid I will never find a fitting macro lens in the future. Because I could only find a total of three macro lenses on the used market, I am trying to get all the essentials at once.

Is this a good build for the money, or am I missing anything?

With this Micro 4/3 build, am I going to have too much magnification? I am afraid it will be too difficult to shoot full-size insects, and I do not like ultra-macro shots of just the head.

• Additional lens for general photography – $100

I really like Micael Widell's macro photographs, although many of them are a little too close-up for my taste.
