We had a bad heat wave recently and my friend has chickens, ducks, and geese. She was constantly sending me videos of them in the little kiddie pool, under the sprinkler, eating frozen peas from water, etc. They were very happy and cool while their people were suffering lol

Our hens all summer have had water refreshed/changed twice daily, fans, tons of shade, sand for the dirt baths, frozen watermelon, various other frozen veggies and fruits, etc. The girls are always so stoked when they see us coming down with the green tote bag, they know they are about to get something good. I'm telling you, those girls eat better than we do sometimes. They return the favor by continuing to produce eggs at their normal amount when I'm hearing others who have a few hens have slowed down due to the heat.

I hate the heat, I'm autistic and already struggle with temperature regulation and sensory issues that arise from being too hot. This summer has been hell. I'm constantly exhausted, pissy, and can't stand the feeling of my own skin when I walk outside cause it feels like everything just clings to me cause the sweat can't evaporate.
Give me the -60 any day. I can always put more layers on. There's only so much I can take off if I get too hot before I end up on a list somewhere.

I wish I could! The worst of the heat wave was a couple weeks ago and that's when I was getting most of the videos. It was making me so happy cause I got to sort of name one of the geese and he was just loving it and honking and flapping. I was like, "Go, Ryan!" (The goose's name is Ryan lol)

She was struggling with an idea on how to keep them secured but still let them roam as goslings cause they had to keep them in the house for a bit. They were too little to put with the other birds yet. I suggested something similar to a whelping box for puppies, but made of like those moveable wire enclosures people put up for dogs. I suggested laying a tarp down inside that and securing it to the fence, that way they could have bedding and not worry about goose messes in their floor.
My friend called me a genius and said if one of the geese turned out to be a male, she'd name him after me. I said, "No, don't name him u/Terminator7786. Name him Ryan. After Ryan Gosling. Cause you know, he's a goose."
Well it turns out Ryan was in fact a Ryan and received his name change to make it so 😂

Fair, but it can be helpful for your household to have trees near your house.
Where I used to live in Arizona, around Phoenix, SRP sponsored tree programs where they'd teach locals how to care of local trees, then helped them with acquiring trees that are appropriate for the area. https://www.srpnet.com/energy-savings-rebates/home/shade-tree-workshop It's worth checking to see if your local energy agencies or similar have programs like this, imo

There’s so much we can do. China spent billions de-desertifying about twenty years ago and they’re seeing some great results already. It’s really grasses that we need first. Once they get the biome back to moist then you plant the trees, and it continues lowering surface temps which in turn creates more moisture closer to the surface and the cycles keeps going. It’s a fascinating project.
We are just way too short term in this country, so soon California will look like the Fertile Crescent does now, and one day there will be some biologist who claims that we use to grow citrus trees and their peers will call them a lunatic for suggesting it.

On a brighter note, Texas has survived this summer without rolling blackouts for the first time in years during multiple heat domes thanks to how much they have invested in solar and wind power over the last three years.
The renewable train may slow down but it's not stopping any time soon and if places like frikken Texas have already turned to them this early into the climate crisis, similarly regressive places will fall in line under the same financial and community pressures quickly enough, too. They didn't make it even a full decade headlining with their power outages before investing in green energy, it was only five to seven years for them to turn things around if I'm remembering the correctly.
It's not going to do much to help our animal populations in the moment, but it feeds more into the steps we need to take to slow climate change down a little.

rolling blackouts were never a regular thing in texas summers.
February 2021 had rolling blackouts and it was a huge deal. it hasn't happened since then and it wasn't common before then.
i assume you're thinking of conservation warnings, where the grid operator asks people to use less power during peak demand hours.

Here in Australia, air con is essentally no longer a problem for the grid, or power bills. We have so much domestic rooftop solar installed that people are getting free or near free power in the day in most of the country, except in the colder months in the sounth. And that goes for even those who don't have solar installed on their own house, because of all the excess power that gets fed back into the grid.

Sweating is relatively new, evolutionarily speaking, found mostly in humans, horses, and a few primates. It’s a pretty crazy and unique adaptation, allowing you to cool off in the go without interfering with breathing. It’s kind of an evolutionary superpower that allowed us to become apex predators through sheer endurance.

Many years ago, I babysat (ducksat?) a friend’s two ducks. She had a kiddie pool with a slide, in her backyard. I watched those ducks waddle up the steps, slide down into the water, bob to the side of the pool, hop out, waddle around the pool, go up the steps, slide down, rinse and repeat, all afternoon. It was one of my favorite babysitting gigs.

They need water to help swallow their food among other things. Duck ponds are great for them but they tend to get dirty very quickly and turn the area around it into a muddy mess. I can see why someone might not opt for it. I had a kiddie pool that I cut a hole into and hot-glued a water spout to drain and clean for my ducks. But when it was not clean, boy did the mosquitos love it.

Yes, they need daily access to water at least as deep as the tip of their beak to their eyes. You can tell when one hasn't been able to wash their eyes for a day or so for whatever reason, because they'll start getting white foam in the corner of their eyes. The eye foam goes away once the water problem has been fixed. These ducks obviously have access to water somewhere.

My G-parents lived kind of in the country and their neighbors had chickens....yard birds.
And Grandma would turn on her sprinkler for her garden and the chickens would run across the street to be in the water...then they'd eat bugs and then go home. She considered it a symbiotic relationship.

I have pekins and they are disgusting little dirt balls, so no pond for them!
Instead they have baby pools that I can easily dump, rinse and refill.
This summer has been so brutal that I set up their pools with the hose at a slow trickle to keep it constantly cool and full. The runoff trickled down to my pigs wallowing hole and did the same there…everyone was still hot, but the constant fresh cold water was a life saver!
We also have a horse-sized splash pad that the horse, pigs, and ducks adore!

My own ducks have bowls and kiddie pools all over the yard, and a creek... But nobody can tell ducks where they should sit outside, lol. We can't see her whole property, and if she owns them they likely at least have water in their coop that they could go drink anytime. But that kind of thinking can be pretty abstract for ducks, I love em but they're not particularly smart birds...
96 is not too bad for them, on a day like that I'd just be keeping an eye on them and if I saw them panting like this I'd give them a sprinkler exactly like this gal did or set a bowl of cool water closer to wherever they chose to sit.

Knowing ducks, they could very well have wandered out of sight of their usual water source, and since they can't see it they forgot they can just go back.
Rest assured, though: if they didn't have access to deep water somewhere, their eyes would have foam in them and their noses would get all crusty in a matter of days. These ducks look healthy to me.

All birds do. They don’t have many ways of dealing with extreme heat except for open mouth breathing. I always leave multiple shallow basins of water for the wild birds in my yard. They all look so relieved to find water. I wish more people would consider the animals who are suffering during severe heat.
Of note, open mouth breathing can be a sign of respiratory distress in both birds and especially mammals. So context is important. For instance, you should never see a rabbit open mouth breathing, that is a sign of a very serious problem. If it’s not hot and you see a bird open mouth breathing, it is also a sign of a very serious problem.

I raise ducks. A plastic baby pool or even shallow tote would bring them immense joy and allow them to clean their sinuses.
Also thawed frozen peas are their absolute favorite treat and they’re also really good for their health in moderation.

I experienced this in my back yard when it hit 117 where i live in Oregon. I noticed birds in the trees panting. Put the sprinkler in the shade on low for them. I couldn’t believe the variety and amount of birds on the ground, in the water, panting with their wings spread.

I'm in the UK and it's been pretty brutal for wildlife this year. We have several families of seagulls on roofs around us and literally every single chick died during the June heatwave because they were too young to fly and had no shade.
