I remember reading somewhere about Madlib looking at using ai songs to sample as a way to bypass needing sample clearance. Interesting, if true, that he is creating customs ai tracks himself to sample. Hopefully, he is doing the chopping and programming instead of having ai create the beat. Ultimately, it would not even matter if he does not release anything. You know, where's Droogie Otis at?

I heard rapsody say that he mixed his new stuff with AI with live instrumentation as well, but he still got sample stuff on his beat tapes

I feel conflicted about this.

On one hand, I get pretty infuriated when I hear AI slop music. I get pissed at the amount of AI music channels that gets recommended to me in my Youtube feed. Most of the time I often find AI music sounding uninspired and boring...

But on the other hand using AI to source samples into something that has an end result made by human hands with a human touch actually sort of makes sense to me. I get it, samples are hard to clear and you could argue this gives samplers more artistic freedom to create their own samples. Sampling is a craft that takes music already made to make something new; if you really think about it AI is essentially doing the same thing.

I hate that I feel conflicted about this because I really do believe AI should stay as far away possible from artistic craft, whether its visual or musical arts... but in the context of sampling music I think it actually sort of makes sense. But maybe this is also just me trying to justify what my hero Madlib is doing. Either way, he's going to get a lot of heat from this if he ends up releasing an AI sample-based project.
