Mod Approved Monthly "Is My Cat A Maine Coon" Forum

If you're wondering if your cat is a MC, this is the place to ask!

In general, this subreddit operates under the assumption that having no papers means your cat is not a Maine Coon. However, what we can tell you is whether your cat does indeed exhibit any physical characteristics that look like those of a Maine Coon.

(Ft. Nice photos I got of him in the vet office..📸)

Meet Backwood! He’s my first cat and my first Maine Coon, and I’m really excited to welcome him home finally.

I’ve been doing my homework on the breed and getting everything ready for him. I know Maine Coons have their own quirks, and I’m looking forward to learning even more as I get to know his personality.

For all the experienced Maine Coon owners here: what was something about your cat that you didn’t expect when you first brought them home?

I’d love to hear your experiences with the breed and see how Backwood compares as he grows.

Question Curious about kitten size

My wife has wanted a Maine Coon for a very long time and we finally found a small breeder not too far away that had kittens available. He is absolutely adorable we've had him for a week, and even I (not the biggest cat person) love this little guy. I'm just curious if he's a good size for his age. His paperwork he came with shows that he was born May 20th so he is almost 3 and a half months old. The breeder said his dad was upwards of 25 lbs. Which sounds absolutely crazy to me someone who's only ever had normal size DSH cats, but as I've learned from my wife and from researching that's normal for Maine Coons lol. We've done a lot of research to make sure we're feeding him the right food and that we're feeding enough to make sure that he can sustain the quicker growth rate of his breed. Currently at 3.5 months he's almost half the size of our full grown DSH(aside from the fact that our DSH is a FATTY lol, I'm specifically meaning height wise) is this legitimately normal? I've included some pictures with a yardstick next to him and a 32 oz owala in hopes that you can just tell me whether or not he's a good size for his age.

Thank you in advance.

He's really really playful so it was kind of hard to get a good clear picture so I'm sorry about that.

This little idiot has woken me at 4am for the past three days. She runs around the house screaming and just being a chaos gremlin. She screams even louder when she encounters obstacles like a closed door. Yesterday, I didn’t get any peace until she finally took a nap eight hours later.

Such is the life of a MC parent. 😂

Question Toy suggestions?

My kitten is VERY smart and VERY demanding. And he gets bored easily of the rotation. Here’s some of the stuff he likes!

- small fluffy things
- carrying his catch in his mouth
- WAND TOYS. especially worm on a string style ends
- this baby like toy where ping pong balls go around on a track. He also loves this little robot ball that runs around with a fluffy tail

He gets bored easily of the robotic stuff that doesn’t have automatic turn offs within about five minutes. I have some that go for 15 and then turn off, and after a little he sits down and watches it instead of playing. He also didn’t care for this robotic plushie that flaps its wings and chirps, but he liked it when I ripped out the hard heavy part and it was just a plushie skin, lol.

I work from home but I can’t always play when he wants to. It sucks to ignore him and he can tell I’m ignoring him too. Little dude, I’m trying my best!

This is my soon to be new kitten. She is changing all the time. Any guesses what she may look like full grown? Currently she is a little over 8 weeks now.

My Maine coon girl is 14 months old.
Compared to my son’s 10 month old Maine coon, her hair is kinda short and not very fluffy. Will she keep filling out?

Anyone else’s MC decide that the place to play with you is their cat tree? 😄 Anytime she’s in a play mood, it’s a pretty safe bet she’ll run to the tree for play.

Question Possible HCM Death - should I let the breeder know?

Post image
47 Upvotes

Hi Folks,

Obvious TW.

We lost our sweet boy Ziggy one month shy of his 4th birthday to heart disease this past Friday. He developed a saddle thrombus and when they did an ultrasound of his heart at the emergency vet, found significant enlargement of his left atrium. It was devastating, and we made the choice to humanely euthanize.

I got Ziggy from a reputable breeder who performed genetic testing. From what I understand, breeders can’t test for every gene that can make a cat more likely to develop HCM and some cats will develop HCM without having any genetic predisposition. My question is, should I contact Ziggy‘s breeder with the news of his passing? Is this relevant/important info for them to have, or does it not matter?

Thanks everyone.

Question Litter box recommendations?

Post image
87 Upvotes

This questions is aimed mainly at my fellow Aussie Maine Coon owners but I welcome recommendations from overseas too!

What litterboxes do you use? At the moment I use the large ones from K-Mart but my 10mo kitty (pic attatched for tax) is rapidly getting close to being too big for it without taking the lid off. My other cat a rather portly DLH likes a roomier place to do his biz and in total there are four cats in the entire household. Would you reccomend a good quality auto-clean contraption or the old style scoop and refresh style in amnesty using? I'm willing to pay good money for a good quality item!
