Full Sega Master System 3D Set

I thought I'd share a photo of my full Sega Master 3D set. I enjoy 3D and VR content from the Famicom 3D System and Master System 3D, to Virtual Boy, to 3D PS3/360/Blu-ray all the way up to VR headsets.

The Sega Master System only has the 8 compatible games but there is definitely some fun to be had amongst them.

I had most of those. Missile Defense 3D was my favorite; I lost countless hours in that one.

I always wanted to try Outun 3D but it was never sold in my area.

The Sega Master System had a 3D setup that was really ahead of its time, using active shutter glasses for a full color 3D effect.

What was it like experiencing it at the time? (If that's when you had it)

I only experienced it a few years ago (along with the Famicom 3D system by the way which was the similar time period) and I found it fun.

For me I definitely needed the bigger glasses though as I have a large head, my wife tested the Sega glasses to confirm they worked okay. I used the Famicom 3D Glasses originally but now also the ASUS versions.

I got it when it came out and it was incredible tech. The idea behind how it worked was so simple but the actual 3d effect was mind blowing. I wondered at the time if it was going to be the next big tech. Of course, that's back when it wasn't as obvious that peripherals never succeed...

I bought it new, back in 1988 at an electronics store with my first paycheck from my first real job after graduating college. Mine came with the glasses on the left from your picture as well as the light gun and two controllers.

The graphics were, for the time, amazing and even better than what I could get on my PC from that time. I remember the store where I bought it had the Sega Master System and NES in side by side displays with playable games. I went in that day expecting to buy an NES but the Sega console was so much better that I never gave the NES a second look and would always prefer Sega consoles going forward.

I remember letting my dad (as old school Italian as they came) try Missile Defense 3D and he was amazed and would often ask me to plug it in so he could play a few rounds.

Sadly I got rid of it ages ago.

Fantastic story and a great memory, thanks for sharing!

The glasses on the right by the way are ADUS 3D glasses included with a graphics card of theirs in the late 90's, they weren't originally designed for the Sega Master System, but they work with the same adapter.

Could you provide more info on those Asus glasses?

What's to know? They are wired 3D shutter glasses used on early ASUS 3D graphics cards for PC, however they are the same technology as both the Sega and Nintendo versions so are compatible with both consoles (using the relevant adapters)

Maybe a model number? I have the SMS 3D glasses and a few of those games. I recall the glasses not fitting well so if there's a working substitute, I'd like to look into getting them. Thanks.

I have all of these except outrun. This plus the light phaser games are my sole reason for keeping a crt around. I’ve been wanting to get a new pair of 3D glasses that fit my head better, but haven’t gotten around to it. None of these games are going to change your life, but they’re all entertaining for a while. Missile Defense 3D and Zaxxon are my favorite of the bunch

Almost as fun as picking it up and having the 3D glasses then 😎 haha, nah I joke, it's an okay game.

Now days you can play it glasses free on the 3DS via the Sega Classics Collection, so you can right the wrong of your childhood!!

Is the 3-D effect actually good? Or is it more a gimmick of its time? Always been curious

Gimmick!?! How dare you!

I guess it depends what you're expecting to be honest, it also varies from game to game based on how well it's implemented.

The 3D effect definitely adds depth to the field, so your eyes should be tricked into thinking different parts are on different planes of the games. In some games it works better than others, and for some people it looks better than for others.

I personally enjoy the technology and feel it adds something to the games, but then I also like the Virtual Boy so...

Nice! But no, I don't think I've tried it, I can try it via the Mega SG though, so next time I have that setup I'll give it a go, thanks for the heads up 👍🏻

Probably very few people have actually tried it out 😅 But yes it does work, although you can't play original carts using that setup, so you have to play the ROMs instead.

What about the overall lack of consistency with the 3D branding on the games!? I mean there are only 8 of them, you would have thought they could have agreed on how to display the format on the covers 🙈

Awesome! I just completed my collection a few months ago (minus the boxes for Out Run and Poseidon Wars). I also use a different pair of shuttered glasses that work well but are of dubious long term quality haha. Great stuff!

I have the full set including the CIB 3D glasses and CIB Light Phaser I have since childhood. Zaxxon was really cool with it.

I have Missile Defense, Maze Hunter 3D, and Zaxxon 3D. I never got Blade Eagle or OutRun 3D.

Nice, I have a couple pair of these, and I have a pair that was made for PS2 but works with the SMS adapter and is more comfortable haha.

My favorite 3D device is the 3D Imager for the Vectrex. The Vectrex has its own screen, using vectors instead of pixels (allowing for scaling and rotation in 1982). However it is B&W. Games have overlays you put on the screen to color different areas and add background graphics etc.

With the Imager, you put in one of 2 color wheels depending on the game, which are half black, and half broken into sections of color. The wheel spins in front of your eyes, with the black half covering one eye at a time, similar to the SMS glasses which use LCD. However, it times the image with the colors too, adding color to these B&W games. It is interesting, one game produces bright white items (among other colors) despite having a blue overlay over the game screen itself. Only 3 games originally supported it, and there's a little homebrew now. I really love the ingenuity of it though, and I think it was the first home console 3D device. It is my most valuable game accessory for sure, but that's not why I have it!

I found an archived review of it - I never actually used them for the PS2 and find it weird that they work, apparently good with a few games from what I've heard.

I forget how I heard they'd work, but they have the same 3.5mm heaadphone-style jack as the SMS ones. So you can use them as replacements and they fit adults slightly better.
Of course you still need the card-slot adapter for the SMS.

But on a serious note, if you have a Nintendo 3DS the Sega Classics Collection has Maze Hunter 3D on that and you can experience it glasses free, there are although methods to play other games I believe.

Also, the game Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii has unlockable Master System games, and it includes some of these 3D ones. You can use Anaglyph 3D glasses (the ones with red and blue lenses) to enable the 3D effect.
