rant

hey, so i’m new to this reddit thing and i just discovered this sub, so i decided to scroll down and see what my fellow de5en are up to. and amongst the million tourist posts asking about the iron ore train, i found some posts that clearly have a pattern: mauritanians complaining about the quality of life, how it’s « super depressing » in here, how we’re so far behind the rest of the world, etc. people in the comments often agree, and others say that we must be grateful to be in a country that is not war-torn and stuff. and this is a trend that i haven’t noticed only here, but also on other socials within mauri circles

i’m mauritanian just like y’all and i’ve lived in this country for most of my life, so i definitely understand the struggle and recognize it instead of sweeping it under the carpet, but i just wanted to say this: li cheguer chi ydir chi v belou ya nass ! lately our country has been going through various kinds of crises: gas scarcity, water scarcity, blackouts from the two power stations that exploded, and sooo much more. and you know what i’m noticing every single time? no one speaks the fuck up. everyone complains on snapchat stories, facebook posts and whatnot, but no one actually goes out to protest in the streets?? half of nkc gets down on the streets on new year’s eve, when egypt won a world cup game, when spain won the world cup, HELL, EVEN WHEN GHAITH (THE TIKTOKER) WAS IN JAIL, yet when you’re being screwed over by our government, you don’t move an inch 😵‍💫

cha3bne ye waj3a ch3ayb deni hiye l7ag. some people are out there calling for ghazouani’s third term w safague m3adlin vine le3jeb and y’all are just sitting behind your screens complaining day and night, but what have you done to change anything? what makes great countries are their people and their youth. now, i won’t be delusional and go as far as saying that mauritania is an easy country to change, because obviously it is not. we’ve had a history of bad governments, bad presidents, and we’ve basically gone from one repressive military rule to the other since the 80s, and now it’s even worse with قانون الرموز w sebraniye w 4e zmar kamel. but still, there’s hope! 4i ye5outi dewletkum w 3ar 3likum temou g3oud t3aybuhe l’nsayra w ntume mankum balin vihe 9lem

some few valiant people had the bravery to go out and protest during the water scarcity, and you know what the average mauritanian was doing that day? mocking them on facebook while sitting on his ass doing nothing. same when the power stations exploded a week ago. same also when people are actually talking about what’s bothering y’all: the infrastructure, the lack of things to do, the lack of opportunities for the youth… every. time. you just mock them and go on about your day w 3agueb 4e tjine hun talking about some “this country is sooo depressing womp womp”

i’m probably speaking into the void here because idk how many people will read this and how many of them are actually mauritanians, but i’m urging all of you, no matter your gender, your age, your social status, or your profession, to be more aware, to speak up more, to organize, to protest. even just when talking with your friends, bring up this issue, make it widely known, influence your family/friends to contribute more to this country and its people. there are organizations out there, youth groups, or even just platforms willing to create change for those who will search for it. no, this country is not doomed, it just needs a population that is more aware of its struggles

na7ne ye5outi la 5 million ma tgued ta9lebne 4i lbu93a mn l3alem nezulhe chi!

I agree with everything you said.. even the title and the name 😂
On a serious note.. idk how deeply your feelings are but I’m starting to be embarrassed about my nationality… it’s a recent thing I’m noticing in myself as I used to be veeery defensive about my country and my identity. It started when some of my online friends (they don’t know where I’m from ) started discussing things and I mentioned Africa is underrated travel destination.. they agreed but.. they all agreed that Mauritania (coincidentally ) is the worst travel destination, citing reasons I couldn’t refute or debate. One of them even sent a video of Nouakchott.. around IBN sina which is supposedly our best area.. the video was embarrassing to watch…
I don’t know if I should fight the government or the people at this point.. life is too short to be spent arguing with people about the importance of hygiene, cleaning, and health.. let them fatten themselves up .. let them eat meshwi at meshari3 like it’s their life mission … the people are the problem.. not the country or the continent.. look at Senegal, look at Morocco, look at Tunisia.. Mauritanians deserve the life they live

i hear you honestly, but why be embarrassed of being mauritanian? i personally learned with age that there are sooo many things to be proud of in our country besides infrastructure and how things are managed. our history, our legacy, our different cultures and how rich they are, our people, there’s genuinely so much to be proud of. to the point that even with all the shit we’re dealing with, i genuinely wouldn’t trade being mauritanian for any other identity. and that’s exactly why i think we have to try to change the mentality instead of just giving up on people. yes, life is short, but isn’t it a pretty great life spent building something that is ours and that will eventually belong to our children and grandchildren? rather than spending our whole lives despising where we come from and the people who live here. mauritanians deserve better, some are just too ignorant to realize it, and if we’re aware and educated enough to see it, then i think we have a responsibility to make them realize it too. idk maybe i’m too idealistic lmao but i’d rather be frustrated trying to make things better than embarrassed of where i come from

I totally agree with all of this, i’m personally the one who who posted about how depressing nktt and i don’t regret it all, and don’t see it wrong bc i’ve never mocked anyone on protesting or anything, on the opposite i’m totally in for anything like that, but would it happen? I doubt, would this change? I doubt too, can we cry about how depressing the situation we live in and get it off our chests? Well i thought so, i won’t make this personal and it’s not supposed to be but i won’t be delusional either and tell u that ppl can just protest, where tf are those ppl who gonna protest? We are not a single population, mauritania had struggled for aa while with being ruled by “القبائل" and even if u are willing to protest and get arrested and get killed by the worst case scenario there is many of ppl who won’t do so bc they do have a “weld 3am” f dewle w won’t risk his life as long as weld 3mou is in charge and he will live on the hope that he will become something as well bc of his relatives, every single one in here thinks about انا و الطوفان من بعدي

i actually read your post and i hear what you’re saying, but just to clarify, i wasn’t directing my post at you personally. like i said, i’ve been seeing this kind of discourse all over different social medias and within mauri circles, so it’s really the general mentality i was talking about. and i definitely agree that we’re a very fragmented population, especially with القبائل and all that. but at the same time, don’t we all share the same struggles and complaints at the end of the day? and yes, we’re a corrupt country where lwassa6a and nepotism can literally have you living the easiest life imaginable, but i think we also have to acknowledge that the majority of the population doesn’t have those privileges. they’re dealing with unemployment, poverty, lack of opportunities and just this general depression of living here. and if that’s the majority, then surely there’s strength in that number, no? i’m not saying people can just wake up tomorrow and overthrow the government lmao, i know it’s much more complicated than that and i’m not delusional about the risks either. but what frustrates me is when people start from the assumption that it’s doomed anyway, so there’s no point in even trying. if most of us are suffering from the same things, then why can’t that be the thing that brings people together instead of just keeping everyone at home complaining individually? even if actual protesting isn’t realistic for everyone, there are still ways to organize, raise awareness, support each other and pressure for change. otherwise we’re just accepting the exact situation we’re complaining about w 4ik hiye chekle

You’re right about the main issue: we don’t lack complaints, we lack organized action. Protesting can matter, but real change needs people who stay consistent, organize, and keep pressure on instead of forgetting everything after two days

By observing the behavior of the majority of our population, I can understand why we are in the situation we are in today.

It’s not only about the government; it’s also, and perhaps especially, about the mentality of our population, which ultimately influences how the government sees and treats us.
