I recently became the proud owner of a mauser c96 dated from 1905. The serial numbers mostly match and it was in fairly good shape with a good bore and not alot of rust pitting, little to no dents and It was taken well care of as it used to be a shooter as ive heard.

Somewhere in its life someone has tried to re-finish it, and tried to parkerise it. They did a poor job as to the aesthetics, but good enough to keep rust and decay at bay.

I decided to go the original route and try to give it its deep dark original tone and rust protection back.

I Removed the entire old finish with glass beads to keep as much as the original intact, polished the bolt and part of the hammer and rust blued it like they did in the old days by rusting, boiling, carding and repeat.
I made my own rust blueing solution with zinkchloride, amoniumchloride and acid and sped things up by using hydrogenperoxide

Furthermore i changed all the springs, found and bought some nice walnut grips and a walnut stock/holster reproduction in poland.

Bought 2 stripper clips and casings/bullets/dies.. and i must say its a fun thing to shoot, it definitely gets attention and is a conversation starter when shooting a few on the range

First time taking this sporterized 98k out and it key holed at 25 yards. First shot was with factory new 30-06 Garand safe S&B 150 grain 30-06 and hit the left side 3-4 3-5 block and left somewhat of a straight hole. Then the rest key holed. Even handloads of 45.5 grains of h4895 and .308 hornady 155 grain match bullets that shoot 1moa at 200 yards key holed. Any ideas? Barrel looks bright and clean down the bore and the crown does not swallow the hole bullet when I stick it on.

Hello everyone, first time poster

I’m looking at buying a “starter” WWII Kar98k, something like a M48 or Russian capture variant. I’m sure I can find the proper resources on what to look for when buying the gun. I am slightly lost on what resources (books, manuals, etc.) and products I’d need to maintain, clean, and store the rifle once I get one.

Also, if anyone could give me some pointers or suggestions on what to do once I receive the rifle I’d appreciate it.

I have a friend with a beautiful civilian Model 98, lots of engraving. But it is chambered in the J round. .318 rather than .323.

I can't find any for sale on the internet. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Post War C96 Bolo Mauser Broomhandle 7.63x25 + Wood Case C&R

Bought this boi from GunBroker by winning the auction. The gun ended up costing $1,777 (a total of $2,000, including taxes and shipping). I was eager to get any Mauser, and this one caught my eye for its condition, grips, and sweet wooden case. The gun fired flawlessly, and I managed to fire 100 rounds without issue.

Picked this up a few days ago at a gun show. I think I got a great deal on it and am very happy with it. Still has grease in the bore and action. This beauty is all matching down to the rear sight and cleaning rod. I don’t think it was ever issued. Ended up cleaning all the gunk out which took probably 2 hours, shot 5 rounds through it and wow….7mm is so pleasant to shoot.

I think it's a Mauser but I have no idea it was a gift from my uncle and he never knew much about it either

Traded an old optic I had laying around for this. Almost everything is matching minus the barrel and the plate underneath in front of the trigger guard. Has a few markings I’m unable to find info on.

I buy this 480€ (France), it's in a pretty neat state, i guess i didn’t did the best deal ever, but not a bad one ether.

By the way, what's the meaning of the "38" engraved ?

Hello all,  I Come seeking guidence from the mauser community. 

Here's the deal,  I have a sporterized mauser project that I want to finish up.  I didn't start the project and normally wouldn't cut up a milsurp rifle like this, but it has sentimental value to me. I'm no stranger to firearms but building a sporterized mauser is a more involved project than I've ever done before.  I know a little about the parts but any additional information is welcome.

The boring story. 

My Grandfather was an avid hunter and outdoorsman into his 60s to include a decent amount of amateur gunsmithing. At some point he just kind of gave it up.  He is currently in his 90s and unfortunately experiencing significant cognitive decline so will not be a source of information.  Such is life.

For probably 30 years the rifle project In question has been sitting on a workbench in his basement unfinished.  I'm in my mid thirties and It's been there as long as I can remember.

I recently visited and with the family blessing took the project and any extra pieces and parts I could find laying around with the intention to finish it.

The details.

The parts I have consist of the following:

A Federal Ordinance Inc model 98/85 receiver, bolt and trigger.  I'm thinking it's of Spanish origin.  My dad seems to think he may have bought it in california on my grandfather's behalf in the 80s.

A barrel with various markings pictured.  My research indicates that it's a FN barrel from Belgium.  I'm not certain on the caliber or date of manufacture.

A unfinished mauser sporter stock branded "Timberline Mauser series 111". I couldn't find much on this brand but it appears to be a typical partially inletted mauser sporter stock.

What I think has been done so far.

It appears the barrel was already added to the reciever.  The bolt has been swept and the stock has been chiseled out to fit the barrel and receiver.  It fits in pretty snug. 

What I think needs to be done.

The barrel needs to be "bedded".  The stock needs to be finished and a scope mount added. I think I'm missing the magazine follower and the two screws to hold it all together. 

Not to mention figuring out what caliber the barrel is and checking head space.

I honestly think he did most of the work and I need to do very little to drag it over the finish line.  Tell me how I'm wrong and help a guy finish this up so I'll have something to remember my grandfather by when he's gone.

Saw this at a local gun shop for $300. Ive always wanted a mauser without breaking the bank and I liked the way this one looked. Would appreciate any info you can give me about it. All i know that it is a turkish 1903.

Just picked this up as part of a collection sale, anyone have an idea of its value? Also… why/how does it look almost new? Are these being refinished?

I recently traded a 22 pistol for this beautiful 1910 model small ring mexican mauser in 7mm its been sporterized and reblued beautifully. Definitely an heirloom piece but want to take it out on a future deer hunt. the crest is absolutely beautiful and dont want to destroy it. any advice or ideas?

I have a WWII war trophy that my dad sporterized back in the late 1940s. It has a turned-down bolt handle.

I am trying to put a low-mount scope on it, but the bolt does not clear the scope. I have put some high-mount see-thru mounts on it, along with a cheek pad to raise my head a bit. It's OK, but not really what I wanted. I had a Model 70 style safety put on it, along with a Timney trigger.

My dad never took anything with it, and I would like to get a deer this season.

Have any of you dealt with this before?

I picked this up a warehouse in the suburban Twin Cities approximately 22-23 years ago. I had them pick out a rifle that was in good cosmetic condition, as you could choose which level of milsurp you wanted. I cleaned the ugly shellac off, clean out the barrel, removed the grease, oiled up, added a sling and put away in the safe where it has sat in for 20+ years. I’ve owned around 10-15 Mausers but this is my last remaining one.

Hello. I have a small problem with my Turkish Mauser. The third round keeps getting stuck, and the bolt just guides straight past it. Are there any common fixes y’all can suggest before I go down a rabbit hole trying to figure out this problem? (Sorry, I’m new to milsurps and firearms.)

The reason why I'm asking is because there is a lot of turkish 8mm mauser that no one wants to shoot because it's good for bolt guns and nothing else that limits the customer base so to get rid the awful crap but in a faster and fun way no I don't hate bolt guns My first ever gun I ever bought is a turkish m38 k Kal mauser and I love it

Hey everyone, bit of a long post but looking for some advice on how/if I can get a scope on this. I inherited this sporterized mauser in .30-06 about ten years ago, and I took it to a gunsmith to get it drilled and tapped. The gunsmith told me that it wasn’t worth my time because the bolt would hit the scope, and 18 year old me didn’t ask any more questions.

I have two questions, was that gunsmith full of it and I could get this drilled and tapped, or could I potentially install a rail where the rear sight is (I included a pic of where I took the rear sight off and there are two holes drilled a half inch apart) and potentially go with an LER scope or some other kind of optic?

Any advice is appreciated, just looking for some honest feedback on if this is worth the time. Thanks!

I bought this 1937 S/42 Kar98 about a year ago and I’m thinking about heading to the range with it. Given the age and unknown storage conditions it probably needs a cleaning but is there anything else I should check out with it before I go and shoot?
