So apparently and out of nowhere, SNK decided to release Metal Slug Attack: Reloaded, the reimagined and improved version of the discontinued Metal Slug Attack on June 18, 2024 for Steam, PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Discuss in this thread regarding your concerns and insights about the game.

Guide Metal Slug Attack: Reloaded - Quick Start Guide

What is this game?

The original Metal Slug was released in 1996 for arcade machines. A run'n'gun platformer, you blasted your way to victory using coins to buy extra lives as needed. It received several sequels.

Later in 2014, SNK released a smartphone tower defense game called Metal Slug Defense. In this title, you tapped your screen to send various characters from the series running across the screen to the right, while they automatically fought opposing characters trying to get to your base on the left. The first player to blow up the opponent's base won the round.

MSD stored all of its save data on the local device, and cheaters were rampant. In 2016 SNK ceased development of that game and relaunched it as Metal Slug Attack. This new title required an internet connection for all actions, as the player's save data was kept securely online.

MSA received content updates fortnightly for about seven years, resulting in a massive library of new sprite art unique to the game. However, SNK ended its run in 2023, closing the servers.

Metal Slug Attack: Reloaded is a 2024 re-release of Attack for Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PS4|5, and Switch.

What are the main differences between Attack and Attack: Reloaded?

In the mobile game Attack, most game modes required "sortie points" to play. These regenerated over time, and limited players from advancing too far too quickly (unless they were willing to make microtransactions to get more sorties sooner, at least). In Reloaded, sortie points aren't a thing. You can play any unlocked game mode whenever you want to and there are no microtransactions.

At the end of its run, Attack had over 1,300 playable units. However, as the purpose of the game largely revolved around collecting new units, most of the old ones were quickly rendered obsolete by subsequent updates. Often units would be re-released in a stronger form, with a slightly different move set and a different colour scheme.

Reloaded debuted with around 300 playable units. Most of the recolours are gone, but also some old characters don't appear at all. Those which have been kept have largely been rebalanced, increasing the pool of "viable" units. Presumably more units will be added later, although it hasn't been made clear whether they'll be paid DLC or not.

How do I play?

Over time, your Action Points (AP) will gather up in the lower left corner. Click the supply girl (Rumi) to speed this up.

Your available units are listed in the lower middle of the screen. Click to deploy them into battle.

Deployments and AP production upgrades both cost AP. You need to balance your spending between them: send out units too often, and you'll run out of AP. But if you upgrade your AP production too often, you might not be able to deploy enough units to defend your base. A good rule of thumb is to start each battle with two upgrades, start sending out units, and then to upgrade further whenever you've got the AP to spare.

Deployed units have a charge bar under them which fills up to ready their special attacks. Charged units start to glow - click them to activate their special moves.

Overwhelm the enemy base with your forces and you win:

  • Experience (XP), which increases your player level.

  • A random selection of items, that can be equipped on to your units between battles to unlock skills (stars). You get one for each of the hidden POWs you manage to find - there are four per stage.

  • Metal Slug Points (MSP), that can be selectively spent to level up your units. You get more if you win fast.

The items you can win, and the amounts of XP and MSP you earn, improve with harder stages. The first time you beat a stage you'll also earn medals, which are used to unlock new units.

How do I get stronger?

First go to Build Up => Customise Base. Here you can spend MSP to power up. The choices include permanent AP production speed upgrades, which you should prioritise! Each upgrade caps out at whatever your player level is (or at level 10, if you haven't reached that point yet).

Now access your Units list (eg again through Build Up). Select a unit, hit LV UP, and you can spend more MSP to improve it.

Next use the EQUIP button to add items to your unit. There are five panels to fill up, and they need to be done in order. The first four each unlock a skill (star): these can make units tougher & stronger, and some can even grant them new moves! The fifth panel offers no special reward, but it does accept more powerful items than the earlier ones do.

If you don't have an item you need for a unit, click it on the equip screen and you'll get an option that shows you how to obtain it. This can quick-jump you to the stages that reward it.

Once a skill has been unlocked, use the SKILL button to level that up too. Skills can be levelled up to whatever a unit's main level is.

Later you'll unlock more systems that allow you to become even more powerful, but for starters just remember to keep spending MSP on levels (especially base upgrade levels) and to keep dishing out your items to your units.

How do I get more units?

After beating a few stages, "Call to Arms" will unlock. This works much like a gachapon machine, or a crank: you spend medals for a random assortment of prizes.

CtA is a "box crank" system, which is to say that the prizes you win are removed from the list of possibilities for future wheel spins. There are multiple reward lists, each offering better units, but costing more medals. The "better" lists don't unlock until you've cleared more stages.

Prizes consist of unit "parts". The first time you get parts for a unit, that unit unlocks for play. You will then occasionally be awarded more parts for those units you already have: these can be used to "evolve" those units back in Build Up. Any units with an evolution available will be glowing on your list.

There are five stages of growth:

  • Iron (10 parts)

  • Bronze (20 more parts, or 30 total)

  • Silver (50 more parts, or 80 total)

  • Gold (100 more parts, or 180 total)

  • Platinum (150 more parts, or 330 total).

Rarer units start out at a higher stage than common ones do. Each evolution not only makes the unit stronger, but it also reduces its AP cost as well, so you want as many parts as you can get for your favourites. Go ahead and spend your medals in CtA early and often: the game awards lots of them, and you'll have a hard time if you delay on spending.

CtA won't give you any more parts for a unit after you've gathered enough to plat that unit. Once you've earned plat for all units in a list, that entire CtA list will be marked off as Complete.

Discussion Truly a one time moment for MSA and it's loyal community

I've just came back to reddit a few weeks ago. I barely use it anymore besides check other subreddits of games i have been playing, so I have been completely deattached from this community is so long.

Suddenly having countless posts pop up from this exact subreddits is insane because I didn't think anybody could have pulled this off but they actually did. Multiple apks for MSA are apparently here and it's crazy to see this happen randomly in 2026.

Seeing the entire MSA Community unite once more to bring back this game to its glory makes me feel like I'm re-living the good old days back in Christmas 2016 where jolly kid me just learnt about this game thanks to multiple videos popping up on YouTube. Speaking of which, I can't believe it's been 10 years.

Apparently somebody in the MSA discord server is working to make a version of the game where you could actually progress in, hopefully not with a hundred microtransactions flooding your screen as you log in, I really hope it'll work out just fine in all honesty. I would want to play this game on my phone again (which is on the verge of tears with a broken screen protector but if it works, it works)

Im sure I'm not the only one who's having a sense of satisfaction seeing this community wake up from its dormant cry-chamber. In all honesty I'm not sure if SNK will allow but I would really love to see this game run by the community and brought back from the dead completely.

I wish good luck to all who have been working hard on releasing versions of the games. I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure trying to dig up old data from an abandoned, closed 2016 mobile game might be a tad bit hard to do. Honestly shit might have been lost media if it wasn't revived back in 2024 and brought back onto steam.

I still have so many thoughts to say about this whole thing but the post is getting ridiculously long, I suppose nobody is going to finish reading this entirely. So instead I ask, what are your thoughts on this? Is this truly a new era for MSA or are we delusional? (Lmao)

And is anybody also worrying that SNK might notice this and force the Apks to be deleted? Or if the apks releases could very much contain malware?

Positivity all the way, but I really hope that the entire community keeps its integrity.

Discussion REAL IMPORTANT STUFF FOR THE MAKING OF A PROGRESSION VERSION OF THE GAME

Hey people, hope everyone is having fun with the new online version made by Inubix and had the opportunity of playing Zack version aswell, now, into the bussines at hand, Zack has discussed some things on the news server that might make the Progression system of MSA a little bit harder to achieve, so i had this idea, i remember that some of us people had a 32 build of the game on some older phones, so my request here (Not from Zack, because im doing this personally) is for you to try and search an older version of the game you had in your old phones and communicate with Zack so you can pass it to him and make his work a bit easier.

Im leaving the discord server link so you can hop in, hang out or pass the files to one of the admins or Zack himself, he normally hangs around.

Gameplay Metal Slug Attack Space Army Gambit

Hello.

As we all know, MSA, Our beloved battle cats clone has returned to life in its 8+ digit damage, end-of+life glory and Online is fairly new at this point. My 500+ hours in reloaded have taught me to be very crafty with how i can play around with the game's mechanics. Prior to reloaded, I wasn't even aware you could use Invader King's ultimate skill to spam supporters and the fact that you can is kinda busted if RNG wants to ride your meat.

Using this knowledge and the other weird tricks i've picked up from reloaded, Coming back to this game and playing around with aliens has been quite fun and it lead to me coming up with a cheap (yet finicky) strategy at securing wins in an obnoxious manner. I call it the Pea Gambit. Let me put you onto game:

Craft any alien deck of your choosing, Percier is an undisputed pick.

You can use any combo of supporters to spam in tandem with professor(s), maybe scotia or white baby if you want to be obnoxious.

Send out your openers + bersek for a guaranteed stall. You might wanna set your special attack button to on screen since with cocoon's speed buff, Reacher or Shield will have seized most of the stage if isn't long or the opponent's openers meets midway.

Let bersek stall long enough for your first professor(S) sortie to become available. This is where the name "Gambit" makes sense. There is a 1/10 chance your regular king will spawn. He is designed to be a living nuke so you can let him die so you can use fever time.

Use the first 15 seconds of fever time to spam Professor(S), depending on your RNG, You will have summoned a deck and a half worth of your units, pray to god they're varied. The last 15 seconds goes to spamming percier if you have AP to compensate while your 14 units are holding the front or molesting the opponent's behind. Your frontline will either push through, Invader king + Bersek + Reacher (if slotted) will shred through openers early, or percier will poke to death.

The pros of this gambit:

• Nuclear, Catches opponents by surprise and gives them little time to react. It looks like a hacker going nuts which can also leave people guessing or demoralize them.

• It's quick, usually occurring within the first 50-60 seconds of a match or sooner.

• Tons of AP is saved. You're deploying your entire deck and then some for 110 AP per unit as opposed to 360 or 432.

Cons:

• Struggles against Indie due to flan, amadeus robot and CRR (Its always Indie, isn't it?)

• Sacrificing your trump cards early and RNG failing you leaves you with little chance of recovery, Hence the name.

• Appears as though you're hacking. Sudden big unit being deployed early.

I wish i could capture gameplay of this gambit working in real time. Hope the Alien mains out there can see use from this gambit and you should join up with the Space Army Party guild.

Milestone units are the units that get release during major download milestones.

Whether it was your favorite due to the art or gameplay design, what's your favorite one?

So, Inubix (The guy who is making an online) just created a discord and in the two of the morning (gmt-6) launched a alpha version of the game that we could play online, of course, because like two hundred people tried to join in the same time the server crashed after some time after reaching the bandwidth limit of it's internet host, now he made a Kofi so we can donate him for a personal host to store the game database so we can play, so I just wanted to put his discord server that has its Kofi (I'm not going to share that link, safety and trust reasons) so you can help him and maybe hang out and check new updates or news he makes with the game.

Update/Event A project to bring Metal Slug Defense Online back

Post image
54 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm Renato Larenas, a gaming YouTuber, and I want to start a project to try to bring Metal Slug Defense Online on Steam back to life.

The Steam version is still official and its online servers are still available, but there are practically no players. I personally spent around 12 hours searching for a match and couldn't find anyone.

One of the biggest barriers is the paid units. My plan is to grow my gaming channel, Renato Larenas, to 1,000 subscribers (we're just a few short) , once it starts generating YouTube revenue, use part of that income together with some of my own money to give away units to 50 Steam players.

If the first giveaway works, I'll repeat it with future channel income and create a Discord community where we can organize matches, tournaments, challenges and other events. I also want to promote the project to English-speaking players so we can reach people beyond my current audience.

The goal is to start small, bring back the first group of players, and see how far we can take it.

If you still have MSD on Steam and want to see the online community active again, I'd love to have you join the project.

Feel free to comment if you're interested or have ideas for the project!

Discussion HELP URGENTLY NEEDED! Looking to discover how Unit code works in MSA!

Heya, I'm a modder working on Metal Slug Attack Reloaded. Some of you may remember when I got some enemy-only units available through a mod. Currently I want to bring over units from Metal Slug Attack to Reloaded, but I have no idea how unit code is even handled in Attack to try to compare with Reloaded (where it is presumably in the main executable binary.

Now with offline builds of Metal Slug Attack working again, I'd really like some help in figuring out just how it works since i've been stumped for a while. Many things like master table files and unit graphics are well understood, it's mainly unit code that we have no idea on currently. Please let me know if you have any info or discoveries on it!

We're so close to getting the perfect Reloaded build, it's only unit code that's holding us back at this point.

Discussion Alterar status de tropas

Seria muito legal se colocassem alguma forma de alterar os status da tropa, como HP, ataque, entre outros, pois isso daria para criar infinitas metas e composições diferentes.

Alterar tropa por tropa.

Coloquem isso, seria fantástico.

Update/Event MSA offline update

So the updated MSA offline just came out, allowing us to play battles against bots, and play the event. However the battles are limited to only 3 per day (even a day didn't pass, so couldn't verify if it even resets), is there a way to bypass this? Maybe the devs will look to fix this later (I know this is how the game works, but since this is offline, this is the only fun way to battle, the bots are decent)

EDIT: I did try advancing my clock one day forward and nothing happened, I still can't play battles. Did advance it two days, still nothing. But the game recognized the time forwarding, and the duration of the event got reduced by 2 day(1 then 2), went from 4145 days left to 4143 days left, but the battle count didn't change.

Discussion MSA

Discussion Why doesn't SNK revive Metal Slug Defense from Steam?

Post image
35 Upvotes

It's free to download on Steam, and the servers exist so you can play online, but it has the disadvantage of requiring in-game currency. It was simply released in 2014 and never updated, leaving the base version of the game unchanged.

SNK could switch the in-game currency to medal purchases, like on Android, and promote it again. Since the game is free-to-play, they could make it successful again. Why not?

Deck Help Deck help for each factions

Since the game has just been revived (Thanks to whoever managed to revive the game and the ones who shared it!), what are some good decks for each factions? Also the strongest units for each factions?
