Whittingham avoided definitive statements at most positions, but he made an exception in naming freshman Tommy Carr as Michigan’s backup quarterback behind starter Bryce Underwood.

The outcome wasn’t a surprise based on the totality of the competition, but it’s still worth acknowledging how far Carr has come. The grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr and the brother of Notre Dame QB CJ Carr was a three-star recruit who flipped from Miami (Ohio) to Michigan shortly before signing day. The notion that he would be one play away from starting at Michigan as a freshman wasn’t much of a consideration at the time.

Carr beat out Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, a fifth-year player who threw for 38 touchdowns and nearly 7,000 yards across four seasons at Colorado State. Fowler-Nicolosi has more experience and the bigger arm, but Carr took hold of the backup job in the spring and didn’t let it go after Fowler-Nicolosi joined the competition in preseason camp.

“Tommy, having all those reps he got in the spring, being comfortable in the offense, is a step ahead in that aspect,” quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. said last week.

Midway through camp, coaches indicated Fowler-Nicolosi had made up enough ground to pull even in the competition. It bodes well for Carr’s future that he held off a challenge from a more experienced player.

“Tommy, he has some savviness about him where he’s just out there playing ball,” Detmer said.

I expect WR3 to be heavily rotated between Goodwin, Ffrench, and Johnson.

We’ll definitely need him. Don’t know why some fans don’t want him back. Makes no sense to me. It’s basically the same as waiting for a guy to get a medical waiver, aka like when Rod Moore got one. It takes a bit for the process to play out.

I just want to remind people, the totality of this roster is why we’re top-10. I’ve seen lots of takes already about how the McCoy injury is like some death blow.

Yeah it’s bad, but we have plenty of options. People haven’t even seen Liburd play and from everything I’ve heard, he has been the most improved basketball player this offseason.

Lastly, I just want to say, I hope we don’t go on another international trip for a long time. Injuries can happen at any point, but I’d rather us just play secret scrimmages here in the US, and play in exhibitions here in the US. International ball is a lot different than college.

Michigan fan from Canada here. I was planning to take my dad to what would be our first college football game in Ann Arbor against Ohio State in 2027. My plan was to “gift” him the tickets this Christmas (I doubt they would be on sale at this point). For my own reference, when should I expect them to go on sale?

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but there’s an interesting fact about two of Michigan’s Final Four appearances:

Michigan has made the Final Four for BOTH the 200th and 250th anniversaries of the United States!

I’m not joking, just look it up!

Michigan made the Final Four for the 200th anniversary of the United States in 1976, which ended in a loss to the undefeated Indiana juggernaut in the national championship game.

And now Michigan made the Final Four AND won the national championship for the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026!

As far as I know, Michigan is the ONLY team to accomplish this feat. They’re the only team from that 1976 Final Four field to play in the 2026 edition.

What an interesting coincidence, eh?
