Help Bedrock Motion sickness

Hii so I’ve just realized after avoiding playing for like 10 years that my “sickness” that i always get while playing is motion sickness most likely.

I play on bedrock now and have turned off head bobbing but i’m wondering if anyone else has any advice? So far taking Gravol about 1/2-1 hour before playing works for about an hour of play time but otherwise i can only sit and play for about 15-30 min unmedicated.

Has anyone else found a magical solution to this?

(yes i know i probably shouldn’t play for super long periods of time anyways but my friends and i have a server and i really just wanna finish my house in one go instead of like 15 sessions)

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance <3

Edit: I’ve gotten a lot of reply’s about the FOV settings, i’ve changed them a little but next time i go on (not today i’ve hit my limit already :( ) i’ll try to increase it to 90 as someone suggested and see if it helps!

Update: So I successfully have played over an hour in one session unmedicated without getting sick! I increased my FOV to the max with head bobbing still off and I didn’t seem to have problems. I did try third person but it SUCKED. I think I’ll try the non full screen as well as my tummy was still a little upset after the hour.

Thank you to everyone’s suggestions y’all are actually amazing <333

do you also play in 3rd person? i know it's a little harder to aim that way, but you DON'T have to play the game in 1st person if you don't want to. you can also adjust the FOV slider and just test out a few different numbers

i’ve never tried playing in 3rd person but i’ll make a new server and give it a try, considering i feel don’t feel icky playing third person games it’s a good idea :) thank you!

Third person is actually a really good shout.

Oo maybe ask this question in r/disabled gamers as well, there might be some people with vertigo who have some tips that would also work for motion sickness

Are you playing on a PC and sitting right in front of your monitor? I have very mild version of this and I find that sitting as far from the screen as I can helps. I need a smaller % of my personal (actual) FOV to be taken the screen. I play on console from my couch so my distance from the screen helps.

I'm sorry you're struggling with this...that's really awful.

yeah i play on my “gaming” laptop, when i was younger before i stopped playing altogether i played with my cousin on her xbox so the screen was a good 4-5 feet from my face but i still got sick :/ and on top of that i couldn’t see what was in my damn chests (i have 20/20 vision i couldn’t tell ya why a screen changes that). i’ve also tried changing the in game FOV but along with the head bobbing off it’s only increased my play time by about 5-10 mins :(

Thank you for the suggestion tho!!

I would keep playing with the FOV in like 10% to 15% increments each session and see if you can start noticing a difference. The original Borderlands for PC didn't allow changing FOV at all in settings unless you edited some ini file. I tried to play it for the first time with friends and I played for 2 hours and got so nauseous for 6 hours afterwards I curled up in a ball on my bathroom floor.

Any time again, even after editing files to change the FOV for the game, if I even looked at that game to play it or in youtube videos I got instantly nauseous, maybe from like a psychological association with it. So I've never played a Borderlands game again.

Windows 10/11 can change the color tone of the screen kind of like removing the blue light. Maybe different color spectrums affect you too? On windows Go to Settings > System > Display > Night light.

There is also a free software that can do this and is a little more advanced called f.lux https://justgetflux.com/

Good Luck!

One thing I've noticed is that I tend to cock my head sideways when I'm gaming. That definitely makes it worse for me. So just be aware if that's something you're doing.

While I don't experience it myself nor do I know someone affected, I heard this is caused by low resolution textures in 3D games, and I read about it both here in the past as well as in the DOOM community.

The simple solution on Java edition is using higher resolution texture packs like Faithful, which come in much higher resolution variants. Keep in mind that these require a mod. You can use Optifine on old game versions or the Fabulously Optimized modpack on newer versions of the game, which both introduces support for high-resolution textures as well as optimizes game code.

For Bedrock, this is trickier, as the Marketplace doesn't permit creators to release content for free and externally sourced resource packs might not be importable outside of PC and mobile (and even on mobile it is tedious to import as you have to somehow invoke the "open with" command).

A big size screen with low PPI usually increases uncomfort...

lack of V-sync (syncing of frames with refresh rate) can affect the overall jittery feeling...

Blue light can be reduced using eye comfort mode... Which usually reduces eye strain

In my opinion, these are a few things that overall affect the uncomfortable feeling of a screen...

What do you say?

What’s your FOV set at? I use Lunar Client and I get motion sick when it’s on 91-Quake Pro. I have to set it to 90 or below

Increase the FOV. That helps a lot as minecraft default (atleast on Java) is 60, normal fps default is usually 90.

Have you tried in a smaller window, instead of fullscreen? My eldest daughter plays always in a small window, she prefers that over fullscreen.

Gets better the more you play. Look in the centre of the screen. The edges are distorted and make it worse. To look around use your mouse. Try changing FOV. I use 90, but it will depend on the size of your screen and personal preference.

Can I ask what your FOV is set to?

I also get bad motion sickness from most first person games so I also just avoid them as tho they are a genre I don’t like.

MC is one of the few that I’ve been able to control and I’m so glad I did… at 30… I’m now 35, and still playing.

My FOV is set to 90, being able to see the stretched out outer edge is slightly jarring for a few mins but I adjusted quickly. I think it’s what saves me and actually allows my brain/perception to be able to ignore something on the screen itself. Doing that feels like it grounds me and lets me play for extended periods.

Headboard off of course, also, disable all FOV events or whatever, it’s what sucks your camera ‘towards you/backwards’ whenever you sprint.

Turning off the damage tilt will help as well.

This is all anecdotal based on solely my experience with mc and first person camera games.

Playing in third person sucks, btw, you can’t see specifically the block you’re mining and that kills it for me. Not useful, but good shout, true in most games that have a functional over the shoulder 3rd person camera.

okay, i have this too but only when watching OTHERS play first-person games. I can play minecraft myself and not feel any motion sickness because i can predict my own movements, but i can't watch any gameplay of others bc their movements are too sporadic for me :( which SUCKSSSS bc i love minecraft lets play content, it keeps me inspired and morivated

lower your fps a lot and don’t play on full screen! helps me a lot

FOV 70-90, and a clean / smooth texture pack. Disable / reduce head bobbing, distortion effects, FOV effects. Try to look at the center of your screen and 'look' with your mouse instead of your eyes. Every ~20 minutes, stare at something distant for 20 seconds (not the screen). Increase the distance from your eyes to the screen in general. Hope at least some of these help!

I get that and I found that changing my FOV to between 80-90 fixes it!

I think you can change the pov from first person- maybe that would help!

This happens to me too and I recently started seeing a physical therapist who specializes in vertigo. Highly recommend because it could be affecting other areas of your life
