Discussion Another Drop, Another List of Parity Issues. Why Does This Keep Happening?

Post image

Two of these have already been confirmed to not be coming to Java for... some reason. And somehow, Bedrock has disparity with itself . Every other biome has the correct grass color, but Dappled Forest is just... green.

Tbf the whole map color system needs to be remade. As of now, only 255 different colors are possible.

124

u/makinax300 15h ago

In java it's only 244. Also the main issue is that new blocks just do not have newer colors, the rest is fine.

31

u/SinisterPixel 12h ago

It's weird how minimap mods have gotten this right for most of Minecraft's lifespan now. Most of them take a colour average of the block and apply Y based map shading, and it works superbly.

8

u/GDCubenumber1 6h ago

Minimap mods is on this way because they need to be show height, Looking all blocks colors would be bad for performance on minecraft maps but changing brigthness according to height would be good.

2

u/makinax300 6h ago

They already do though. There is just 4 shades. Doing it flat is just way easier. And It's more like shading. Because if you place a wool block that floats about 3 blocks on a wool canvas, the wool will look the same but have a different pixel on top and on the bottom.

8

u/ProfessionalTry3133 15h ago

yeah 255 colors seems kinda limiting for map updates

bot

5

u/NightVisixn 10h ago

how do you know?

7

u/Waffle-Gaming 2h ago

there's another wave of bot accounts with years-old accounts, with no pfp and a generic name, spamming comments in the last few days with no prior history that often begin with the word "wait" (2 oldest in its history) and its comment here doesn't make sense if you think about it for a second

u/Andrejosue98 42m ago

A lot of people that have those generic names with no pfp are people that get often banned and just make a new account

Grass doesn't change colour on maps. If it was an actual separate orange grass type (like mycelium, podzol...) it would.

81

u/Just-Guarantee7808 16h ago

It does on Bedrock, but it doesn't change in the dappled forest for some reason.

22

u/Papaya314 I mine, therefore I am. 16h ago

I mean I don't want it to change as it would be really annoying to use grass for maparts.

23

u/IdkIWhyIHaveAReddit 14h ago

why are you building your map art across several biome and not just the ocean?

20

u/Papaya314 I mine, therefore I am. 14h ago

I am not. But you are forgetting grass has different colours in different biomes - including oceans. So you wouldn't be able to use grass for the green we are using it for now, you would have to either not use it at all (there aren't many green shades) or make it in a biome that has the grass shade you need. Also, ocean is many different biomes. Coral reef and frozen ocean have different grass shades for example.

0

u/ATrollNamedRod 13h ago

They could just make it the same colour in every biome except the dappled forest

10

u/TheLittlePeace 12h ago

Yeah but then you're implementing inconsistencies on purpose. For these kinds of things, it's better to be consistent, so newer players know what to expect, and veterans have fewer exceptions they have to either memorize or look up every time it comes up.

2

u/ThE_reAl__ 9h ago

Then if you want the dappled forest colour you have to build map art in the tiny biome?

0

u/9TyeDie1 7h ago

The red grass from the dappeled forest keeps it's colors outside of the biome.

1

u/Papaya314 I mine, therefore I am. 5h ago

No it doesn't. It's just a biome tint.

1

u/9TyeDie1 4h ago

Mb i was thinking of the red shrub

1

u/blankythedude 6h ago

If you want to make use of the green in grass instead of using green concrete to save time, building in ocean defeats the whole purpose

-8

u/makinax300 15h ago

You can just not use it if it's too hard

1

u/ThE_reAl__ 9h ago

Thats the same as saying a redstoner should just quit redstone if Mojang fucked up quasi connectivity and broke every creation

1

u/makinax300 6h ago edited 6h ago

No? You can make map art without grass. You're just a bit more limited. And it doesn't break most map art because grass is not that common in map art and usually you lock maps after finishing them.

1

u/GDCubenumber1 6h ago

Mycelium and podloz uses fixed colors while grass blocks change colors according to the biome

27

u/Tuckertcs 13h ago edited 9h ago

It’s like the two dev teams do NOT talk to each other, and the high-level designers that plan the updates don’t give a FUCK about keeping the two teams on the same page.

17

u/Just-Guarantee7808 12h ago edited 12h ago

The worst thing is the Mojang KNOWS about the different map textures and different bed sprites but they don't want to change it on Java for some illogical reason. I can understand the bed sprites... kinda, but there is literally no reason not to add the locked map texture to Java.

-1

u/GDCubenumber1 6h ago

I think differences are not bad for game versions, Also java one represents that map is locked better.

3

u/Just-Guarantee7808 4h ago

Ignore the cartography table UI and focus on the map textures. The java one is identical with the normal filled map, the bedrock one has a glass overlay at the borders.

5

u/J_pedro01 9h ago

more funny because both teams are continents appart. Bedrock are in USA, Java team are in Sweden

4

u/Vladislav20007 7h ago

aren't there like 20 people working on Java?

-19

u/Status-Butterfly224 13h ago edited 13h ago

you don't understand! we need development time to be wasted spent remaking the entire color rendering system of an item nobody cares about into a significantly less optimized version because of 1 biome! the only way we can get an end update is by working on inconsequential bullshit like this!

10

u/Biivakki 13h ago

Well there was the whole 14 layers of middle management thing that would explain a big part of why development has been so unfathomably convoluted and slow. Hopefully there's no more of that friction on the horizon since they smoothed things a bit

1

u/Status-Butterfly224 2h ago

yes! hopefully now then can more effectively waste their time on useless shit like map colors

19

u/makinax300 15h ago

The map colors have always had parity issues. But the orange grass should be in bedrock

15

u/kkellogg378 14h ago

To be fair, neither having orange grass isnt a parity issue. It's just an issue

3

u/Early-Region-1143 7h ago

To be honest i feel that 2D sprites are better for inventories, they're supposed to be representations of what's held in that slot not the actual thing, is design language that can be traced back to a shit ton of RPG games.

5

u/CaramelCraftYT 10h ago

It pisses me off to no end.

The reason it keeps happening is because there are two studios on opposite sides of the world. The one in the USA works on Bedrock and the one in Sweden works on Java. The problem is there is basically no communication between the two, they are just given a list of features to add.

4

u/Just-Guarantee7808 4h ago

The fact that parity differences happen is completely normal in this situation. The real problem comes when one of the teams acknowledges the parity issue yet does nothing about it, or actively rejects implementing the parity fix.

The locked map texture is confirmed not to be coming to Java since someone reported this “bug” a few weeks ago. A Mojang dev saw the bug, said they were discussing it with the team, and then, a few days later, it was marked as “Works as Intended” for some reason.

I really don’t understand the logic behind this. It’s just a texture. It would take less than 5 minutes to add.

Fun fact: Bedrock has had a unique locked map texture since 2019, which was eventually replaced with the new one. And now that maps have gotten new textures, this would have been the perfect time to add it to Java as well. But nope...

They acknowledge the parity issue, actively discuss it, and yet still refuse to add it. And of course, when the community wants answers, they don’t even give an explanation as to why it’s supposedly so difficult to add a texture to both versions when it was made during THE SAME drop cycle.

u/CaramelCraftYT 40m ago

Oh yeah that too

u/Andrejosue98 36m ago

I really don’t understand the logic behind this. It’s just a texture. It would take less than 5 minutes to add.

It is not just a texture, they probably have to decide if they want the one on bedrock or the one on java and if not may be they add a new texture for both versions.

Like it is just not the focus of the update, so what is the problem?

They acknowledge the parity issue, actively discuss it, and yet still refuse to add it

Yes, they know there is a parity issue, but that doesn't mean they have to do it after each update or at the moment you want.

They just have other priorities.

u/Andrejosue98 39m ago

The reason it keeps happening is because there are two studios on opposite sides of the world. The one in the USA works on Bedrock and the one in Sweden works on Java.

billion dollar companies that haven't fixed what online communication apps like Zoom or Microsoft teams can fix

2

u/Davi_BicaBica 12h ago

And when I say Mojang is lazy I'm the crazy one

u/Andrejosue98 34m ago

Yeah, they add a lot of features in like 3 months, but they are lazy because they don't add one more thing.

Like what would make you say: Ahh Mojang is finally not lazy?

If they added this parity, you would probably say: Ahh but they could have added this other feature or fixed this other parity issue.

And if they add that...

ahh but there is a bug in the game and they didn't add this other features and didn't fix this other parity issue.

In the end it is always a moving the goal post, no matter what Mojang does people like you will always call them lazy

1

u/WeakShare4532 1h ago

I think it would be interesting to have a release focused solely on parity, bringing together the best aspects of both versions to align Java and Bedrock more closely—at least regarding features that can be ported (which makes Redstone tricky). While it might not make for a visually striking trailer or presentation, for the sake of the community and quality of life, it would be one of the best releases—if not the best—to date.

My second dream is for the structures to be overhauled—updated to modern standards and made more cohesive and complex, like those in current Minecraft—but I can still dream. :/

u/Andrejosue98 30m ago

it would be one of the best releases—if not the best—to date.

Hard disagree, I don't want to play bedrock, and a lot of players don't want to play the other version.

So a lot of people don't care about parity... heck there are a lot of features that java has and Bedrock doesn't and a lot of feautres that Bedrock has that java does not, features that a lot of people love or have grown to love. So regardless of what Mojang does they will removed some loved features.

A parity change will most likely make a big chunk of the fanbase be super angry at Mojang. And it would definitely take a lot longer than 3 months which is the current drop rate, focusing multiple drops just on parity changes that will make a lot of fans be annoyed and adding no new stuff would cause a huuuuge controversy.

1

u/GDCubenumber1 6h ago

The only important image on this post is that locked map thing, Bed texture one is not new It's  been on the game for years, The last one is not a parity issue at all, The last one happens because maps does not render foliage/biome color on grass blocks.

Also when locked maps a THING? Is it a new feature?

1

u/Ordinary-Hunter520 4h ago

Locked maps isnt a new feature

Bedrock does show biome based grass tinting on maps, but it just doesnt work in dappled forests for whatever reason

I think we are overdue for a map update, could be a fun drop

Because Mojang doesn’t actually put in the effort to make parity. I do believe they want there to be version parity, but it’s clearly a lot lower on their to-do list.

-52

u/Manos_Of_Fate 16h ago

Are we really calling minor differences in the item sprites “parity issues”? Just use a texture pack if you need both to be identical for some reason.

56

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 16h ago

Why would they even be different?!

-48

u/Manos_Of_Fate 16h ago

What does this question have to do with my comment?

43

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 16h ago

Its very related. Why should the 2 different versions of the game use different assets? its a very bad inconsistentcy and disparity between the two versions that should normally look very identical

-40

u/Manos_Of_Fate 16h ago

its a very bad inconsistentcy

They’re pretty minor differences to be calling them “very bad inconsistency”, whatever that means.

and disparity

I don’t think you understand what that word means.

between the two versions that should normally look very identical

Why?

33

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 16h ago

Why shouldn't they look identical? why shouldn't the game be consistent across versions?

-2

u/Manos_Of_Fate 16h ago

I literally never said it shouldn’t. Nobody is making that argument. You keep repeating these questions and they still don’t seem to be relevant to my question.

I asked why we’re describing this as an issue. Parity issues are things like “tutorials for this farm have to specify which version they’re for because they’re totally different”, not “the sprites aren’t identical”.

20

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 16h ago

Hmm, where did you get the defnition of Parity Issues from?

3

u/Manos_Of_Fate 15h ago

From the meanings of the words “parity” and “issues”.

6

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 14h ago

"the state or condition of being equal, especially as regards status or pay." it doesn't say major difference

→ More replies (0)

7

u/ErnestasMage 14h ago

It's described as an issue since mojang had an objective for the two versions be in parity. Thus the lack of it is an issue.

0

u/Manos_Of_Fate 14h ago

Where did Mojang say that they are actively working on making both versions of Minecraft identical? The other person that made this claim vanished when I asked them that.

-15

u/getbackjoe94 16h ago

You're right, they should remove quasi-connectivity from Java. It's a bug and not in Bedrock. Gotta keep the versions the same after all

16

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 15h ago

literally when did i say they should remove useful features from java?

-4

u/getbackjoe94 14h ago

Shouldn't the game be consistent across versions?

6

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 14h ago

or... they could add it to bedrock..

→ More replies (0)

36

u/revolution_soup 16h ago

there’s no reason for them to have been different in the first place besides oversight so yes

-4

u/Manos_Of_Fate 16h ago

Okay, but what is the specific parity issue that this causes? Are people actually confused in some way because the sprites in their version of Minecraft are slightly different?

20

u/kdnx-wy 15h ago

The issue is the principle more than the direct effect on the game. Mojang keeps saying they want to move towards total parity between the two versions, but if that’s the case why do they keep doing things like this? It would have been simple - in fact, simpler - to just make the textures the same.

2

u/Manos_Of_Fate 15h ago

Mojang keeps saying they want to move towards total parity

I’ve seen them talk a lot about feature parity, but I don’t think I’ve seen them say that they’re actively working towards the two being entirely identical.

11

u/xarma06211 15h ago

it is a parity issue no matter how "minor" you consider it to be.

5

u/Manos_Of_Fate 15h ago

Okay, but what specifically is the issue being caused by the difference?

13

u/xarma06211 15h ago

the fact that it's different in two versions for no reason is the issue. it's as simple as that. there is no need for something to be game-breaking to be considered an issue.

1

u/Manos_Of_Fate 14h ago

the fact that it's different in two versions for no reason is the issue

If you can’t even say why, at all, then it’s not an issue. An issue that does not actually affect anyone in any way is not an issue.

10

u/xarma06211 14h ago

i literally just said why. i'll spell it out for you again bud, there is no reason for two versions to have differences like these without any justification. even in the most minor of things, devs and players want the experience to be the same, because it is supposed to be the same game. what do you not understand?

1

u/Manos_Of_Fate 14h ago

i literally just said why

So, it’s an issue because it’s an issue? Nice tautology.

there is no reason for two versions to have differences like these without any justification

There are lots of potential reasons for minor cosmetic differences.

even in the most minor of things, devs and players want the experience to be the same, because it is supposed to be the same game.

You’re talking about slightly different sprites.

what do you not understand?

What I really don’t understand (since you asked) is why you’re so determined to be upset about something so trivial that you can’t even really say why or how it affects you at all. Like, you couldn’t even think of something plausible enough to lie about.

6

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 14h ago

Why wouldn't the two versions of the SAME game look different? what is your reasoning? why they shouldn't look like each other? its a minor inconsistency. why shouldn't they make the games more similar?

-1

u/Manos_Of_Fate 13h ago

I never argued that they should look different.

5

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 13h ago

Then why are you arguing against them changing it to look like each other.

→ More replies (0)

6

u/xarma06211 14h ago
  1. that's not what i said bruh you conjured this phrase out of your ass. not only that, but it's not even what tautology is. and indeed, an issue is an issue, i wish you actually realized that

  2. tell me a single reason. if you genuinely ask me how this inconsistency affects me (as if i as a person have anything to do with anything here), then i'm gonna ask you how it affects the game in the first place, in order to be considered an intentional "cosmetic difference" and not an oversight, which it is.

  3. and? it doesn't invalidate my point in any way and i literally said that it's a minor issue, yet it still is an issue no matter how you spin it

  4. why are you making any of this about me specifically. you're trying really hard to get a gotcha moment out of me for some reason, when none of this way about me or my opinions, i'm just explaining an extremely obvious fact to you. honestly i don't know why i still bother, you're being an obnoxious contrarian just to grab people's attention and waste everyone's time. there's no way a real person would argue that an issue isn't an issue.

2

u/Shadow_Walker137 14h ago edited 14h ago

Unless it was changed recently, resource packs don't seem to have the capability to give locked maps a different item texture than unlocked maps on Java Edition.

1

u/Manos_Of_Fate 14h ago

IIRC it’s in the GUI container sprites for the cartography table. I haven’t really done anything with it myself yet but my understanding is that item models can specify different textures based on their JSON itemstack components, but the OP just showed it in the table so I didn’t realize there was a separate difference there.

2

u/Shadow_Walker137 12h ago

I was so focused on the map items that I didn't notice the cartography table GUI had differences as well.

For specifically the locked map item texture, I tried to make a resource pack to change just that a year or two ago, but I couldn't get it to work properly. Maybe there's a way to do it now or something I missed, but I couldn't figure it out.

2

u/AMinecraftPerson 11h ago

Do you know what parity means?

What to bring to Java from Bedrock :

  • Locked map texture
  • More advancements adapted from exclusive Bedrock achievements
  • Piston-able block entities
  • Piston model
  • Wither
  • Vibrant Visuals
  • Non-locator maps
  • Removed Quasi-connectivity¹
  • Better particle animations
  • Low-quality bubble columns when graphics are set to "fast"
  • Anti-aliasing
  • Collapsable creative tab "categories"
  • Cauldron tipping/dyeing
  • Snowlogging

What to bring to Bedrock from Java :

  • Bed item
  • Beds don't need support
  • Map shading
  • 1.9 combat system
  • Banner pins on maps
  • Zombie Villager armor being correctly worn
  • Per-world advancements
  • An actually functionnal Programmer Art resource pack
  • Wall torches not being skewed
  • Calendar-based easter eggs
  • Glowing
  • All the commands
  • Java exclusive languages
  • Joke languages
  • Correct translations
  • Snowy leaves DON'T become white²
  • Light-emissive blocks are STILL shaded in the GUI
  • Better redstone torch design

¹ I know I will get flamed for this, but Redstone players are whiny assholes anyway, so I don't care, I'll die on the hill that QC is a bug that makes redstone so much more complicated than it should be

² "But look, it's pretty, it's white !" Who cares. It's not how leaves work, and it just doesn't make sense.

1

u/Moe-Mux-Hagi 12h ago

Oh, good, a concussion.

-1

u/GDCubenumber1 6h ago

1.9 Combat system would be hell for mobile players who already getting destroyed by bedrock players on pc,  Also nowadays most people play game for their first time on trial and mobile devices so staying with old simple combat system would be better choice.

Also 1.9 and above not good at balancing, Combat is more fun but they don't make any nerfs to weapons after all like wooden axes still as strong as diamond sword.

0

u/Moe-Mux-Hagi 4h ago

Just say you play Bedrock and don't want things to change, at this point
