[Moddit] What’s next for mod tools? Join us September 10

Hey y’all,

In case you missed it, u/spez recently shared a post about how we’re modernizing Reddit’s infrastructure. For mods, that means we’re working on better tools to handle spam, abuse, and generic rule-breaking so you can focus on making judgment calls on what’s best for your community. We shared more about what that means over in r/modnews.

Changes around core mod tools can naturally bring up a lot of questions, so here’s a quick TL;DR of what was announced:

• Nothing is changing for existing communities today.
• What’s expanding now: Post and Comment Guidance capabilities are expanding for all communities to help catch rule breaks before content hits your queue.
• What’s coming long-term: We’re building tools like Rules Hub to handle routine enforcement tasks you currently rely on AutoMod for.
• No sudden shifts: We do not have set dates, and we will not change any existing AutoMod workflows until replacement tools are thoroughly tested, proven, and actually meeting your needs.

To help bring more clarity around all of this and give you a chance to weigh in early, we’re hosting a Moddit session focused specifically on the future of mod tools on September 10.

Replacing automod with AI🫩

Questions about the new AI Rules Hub:

1. Why not leave us AutoMod as an option??
2. Will we be able to customize what message that it displays to the user?
3. How will it handle Redact spam? Will we get a notification of what comment it was?
4. Will it be able to change the post flair when a user replies with a keyword and leave them a comment?

I am terrified about losing Auto mod, I have rules hub going, and it won’t even turn on for sexual commentary, nor will it even swap on for “treat others with respect”. If it won’t turn on for those rules, what am I supposed to do? I also tried fsv’s automod Neo and I had so many issues.

In fashion subs, there is no more important rule than sexual commentary. There is no place for discontinuing auto mod until it can do something like that. Also, a lot of people have a clever way to make sexual commentary that AI would simply not recognize.

I cannot promise that my sub will not be full of creepy comments. I don’t know how I will be able to keep the comments SFW without auto mod. AI is not good at detecting creepy emojis like the squirt emoji.

Also, I refuse to wake up and find a whole bunch of posts and complaint posts about moderators. All I need is someone who completely concoct the reason they are banned to have an entire sub turn against me. A perfect example of an accusation is someone is banned because they have an only fans. They don’t understand this and they write to everyone that they are banned because they are trans or black or have large boobs(a regular accusation) . Then the whole world thinks the mods are prejudiced and it all happened when I was asleep. I have a whole automod to catch these types of post and without it I will be so stressed out.

I can see how having something that is a little easier to set up and use would be helpful, especially for new subs, but Automod is so incredibly customizable, is the new thing going to have this kind of flexibility or will it be more cookie cutter? I hope that when you say Automod won’t go away until there is something that replaces it, that you really mean it can do everything Automod can do.

Ah, now I see why reddit cancelled my in person meeting with them on Sept. 10 in NYC. I was really looking forward to that, but I guess this reduced their available bandwidth :/
