Shuffle-it: A Devvit App that promotes broader community engagement
Shuffle-it (link to app description and download)
Hello Mods! Shuffle-it adds a button to your community that sends members to a random post with a single click. This is a community-scoped replacement for the old [r/random](r/random). It is a simple way to resurface older posts and keep people exploring your subreddit.
Some features to highlight are below:
-A "Take me to a random post" option in the subreddit menu, available to everyone and ready the moment you install.
-An optional random post button you can add as a post and place wherever you like (pin it, or add it to your community highlights).
-An optional sidebar widget that links to the button. A low-footprint way to keep it visible without taking a feed slot.
-An optional spotlight post on your schedule: daily, weekends only, or any days you pick. You can also customize the post title. The previous spotlight is cleaned up automatically so your community doesnt get filled with spotlight posts.
-Flair filtering: draw random posts only from certain flairs, or exclude flairs you don't want surfaced.
-A live shuffle counter on each post, and a moderator stats view showing your community's shuffle activity.
-Adjustable post size (from a tiny 96px button up to a full 512px card).
-Optional filters for locked and archived posts.
-Customizable button color, including matching your subreddit's key color, plus an option to use your subreddit banner as the background.
-Works in light and dark mode, on desktop and mobile.

Is there any way mods could custom select the pool of potential posts to feature?
I realize that would make it not exactly randomized, but this is close to something I’ve been looking for and I’m wondering if it might be workable.

I added an update where mods can create a curated pool!
- To Add a post: open its Mod actions menu and choose "Shuffle-it: add this post to the random pool." A confirmation message will show along with how many posts are in the list.
- To Remove a post: same Mod actions menu → "Shuffle-it: remove this post from the random pool."
- Check the list size: the subreddit ••• menu → "Shuffle-it: curated pool" shows how many posts are currently in it.
Both post actions are visible to moderators only, on every post.
For the curated pool to actually be used, set Random pool source in Settings to "Curated only" or "Automatic + curated". While it's on "Automatic", the curated list is ignored.

Sounds great! Will the curated list still take into account the option to exclude locked or archived posts? In other words, if a mod includes a post but 6 months later it gets archived, is there a way to then stop including it without manually looking for it and removing it?

The "Include locked posts" and "Include archived posts" toggles in settings do still apply to curated lists. A hand picked post that is later locked or archived stops appearing on its own while you have those toggles off, and comes back if you turn the toggle back on.

This is absolutely possible! I can write this into the app today.
Edit: Currently you can select specific pools of potential posts via flairs, exclude archived posts, exclude locked posts. I am also working on the ability to filter our certain users posts.

Thats great! The largest community it is in currently (that I know of) is r/piercing. So you can see it in action there too!
Otherwise as you mentioned, I do recommend adding it to a smaller community first to test out all of the settings and configurations to see exactly how you want to use it in your larger subreddits.
Also there is a setting within the app specifically designed for testing. Here is a copy and paste directly from the app’s page:

Leave blank to shuffle your own community's posts. Advanced option: enter another public subreddit's name to draw random posts from it instead, can be useful for testing on a small community, or for a sister/partner subreddit.Again reach out with any questions or feedback!

Shuffle-it update, everything since v0.0.10:
Better checks. The app used to pick from a post list it cached for six hours, so a post removed during that window could still get served. Every shuffle now verifies the post is live at the moment of the click and tries another if it is gone, up to eight times. If they all fail, you get a "try again in a moment" message instead of a dead link.
Curated pool. You can hand-pick the exact posts the shuffle lands on from any post's Mod actions menu, then set Random pool source to "Curated only" or "Automatic + curated." Holds up to 1,000 posts. "Shuffle-it: curated pool" in the subreddit ••• menu opens a wiki page listing all of them with titles, links, and dates added. Your locked and archived toggles still apply to curated posts, so one that later gets locked drops out on its own.
Excluded users. List usernames whose posts never enter the pool, for example AutoModerator or a daily-thread bot.
Clearer mature-community message. Apps cannot read listings in mature subs at all. That used to show up as "no posts to shuffle," which looked like a filter problem. It now says what is really going on.
Update notices. Mods get one "what's new" modmail on meaningful releases, since Reddit updates installed apps silently.
