Fun Matchups

A friend and I wanted to dabble in higher powered magic. Our plan was to proxy a few modern decks to play against each other.

We figured the decks that are in the meta were probably pretty strong, but we don't really know anything about the modern metagame. Which decks would make a fun "battle box" of decks?

I'm especially interested in Boros Energy. Is there a deck that's a fun matchup against Boros Energy? Ideally they'd have relatively even chances against each other.

I'm also curious about "boomer jund" lol. Has jund completely fallen out of the meta?

Broodscale has a pretty even matchup spread and is usually fun to play against so that might be a good place to start

Proxy up at least 8 different decks. Modern is pretty wide open at the moment. Consider:

• Prowess
• Energy
• UW control
• Affinity
• Goryos
• Living end
• Tron
• Storm
• Brood scale
• Domain
• Blink
• Yawmoth/samwise/devoted druid as a creature combo deck

This is a really good spread and a good representation of what you'd likely see at any Modern event.

I'm biased but also throw a Golgari Necrodominance in for the vibes and this is your list!

I would second the suggestion of Broodscale combo. I also think Domain Zoo could be a fun deck to include in your battle box. Firstly, it is interactive (typically running removal and counterspells) and secondly, it wins through regular creature combat damage (fair game). I also think Hollow One and Blue Belcher are fun decks (I'm biased though since I play them). Previously, I believed Belcher was favored a bit against Boros Energy. However, now both Belcher and Boros Energy have a lot of variability in their builds, so I think it is highly build dependent. You could tune each deck to make their matchup spread suit your goal.

I guess it depends on your goals. If you want just a fun battlebox, pick out something that appeals to you style wise and then build out from there. The biggest difficulty as using modern meta as a battle box will be matchups because some decks will just line up terribly for each other.

But if your purpose was learning the modern metagame, then picking out a bunch of decks from goldfish, printing them and playtesting to learn and understand the matchups is very good.

If you want something more balanced as a battle box, you can always start with the modern metagame and then try to make your own balance changes so that matchups aren't as polarized or look into modern decks of past (old spinter twin vs jund. Old jeskai control. Humans). Old decks can be still very powerful but sometimes had less polarized spreads depending on the meta.

Old Jeskai vs old jeskai is probably one of the most fun matchups so maybe do that as well

I would just proxy the top 8-10 decks they all have interesting strategies into each other and it’s super interesting to just see the different ranges of all the decks. Some will be more linear, other decks have a lot of interesting decision branches but they are all very strong.
