Boros Ponza Spotlight series Update

Hello Everyone,

I hope you guys are doing well this Monday afternoon. I woke up with a certain pep in my step because of the amazing work Simon put at the spotlight series this past weekend. Boros Land destruction took one of those coveted top 8 slots for the event with a very solid record. I wanted to talk a little about my thoughts on the deck and the choice to main board those Relics.

If I have my local meta with 3/4 affinity player, is it right to run the karnza version ? It seems so, but maybe I am missing something. Even because you can just add another win con for difficult matchups like wurmcoil engine

I played Goryo’s at the spotlight and went up against Simon. He ripped me to pieces, partly because of the relics, but he’s really fun to play with and super gracious. Don’t have anything to say about the deck, but just wanted to jump in and say he’s a really great player and a really great guy as well

How did you feel your deck performed? Asking as a goryos player

I think the deck performed really well. It was my second big event I’ve played and I made day 2 with Goryo’s, and still held my own on day 2 as well. At least half my match losses were due to my own play (mulligan decisions, better threat assessment, etc), which I think is a good sign for the deck. Affinity is the worst matchup for sure, but I had a 67% win rate against it.

It’s a hard deck to pilot, but when you play it right, it’s incredibly strong. Super resilient to hate because you can combo over the top of most of it, or just pivot to a strong midrange-control game. It has a target on its back, but I’m sticking with it for the RC coming up because I think it’s still a great pick, and I have a lot of reps with it at this point.

Post-spotlight I’m gonna experiment with a couple changes. Could be crazy but I’m gonna try a single copy of [[Waterlogged Teachings]] in the main instead of [[Teferi, Time Raveler]]

I was chatting to him randomly after games but before top 8. Never met him but just were sitting near each other he was so friendly and asked me how I went and we talked about my 10-5 record for a bit before I asked him back and he's like oh I'm top 8. I'm like mate we shouldn't be talking about my deck here.

Edit: Not sure how many Goryos players there were day 2, there is a non zero chance we also played each other. I was on Mardu Energy.

I stopped playing a while back, but god is this deck tempting to play. I started modern with all sorts of boros boom//bust versions into mh2 with solitude and fury. The only thing that saddens me is galvanic discharge replacing bolt (rightfully so, it's just frustrating). Very cool decklist and writeup!

Not necessarily every matchup. I think the card is a very flexible card that could very well perform in any matchup. It buys us a turn which could be crucial to remove key land pieces.

I bring it in when i have some cards that I REALLY dont want in the matchup and i cant find cards to bring in.
