Discussion Personal Hurdle Monster?
What was the first monster you fought that checked your ego or made you hit a wall when first playing?
I remember streaming to my friends in discord as this guy tore me to shreds for hours in world, the rush of finally winning had me hooked on the series

In MH World, the "Tigrex shaped" monsters like Barioth, Nargacuga, and especially Tigrex itself. They all have that super fast scramble charge, long jumps, and nonstop aggro. You don't really fight any monsters with this body type until Master Rank and they all drop around the same time.
I was recently able to hunt a Nargacuga by myself, but I would never even try the other two. It took my friends and I many, many tries to take down Barioth and Tigrex. Tigrex almost got one of them to quit but we made it through and now we just cleared Velkhana.
I also fought all three of them in Rise but the balance there didn't feel as stressful.

u/Apricot_Main 13h ago
Barioth clapped my cheeks for a while until I finally figured it out. It was super annoying because I had to farm it for GS gear in world and I carted so many times.

u/D3xty 13h ago
Rise is very mobile, in the sense that u can dodge much better and move better and every weapon (i dnt know abt the guns) has some form of counter? So it was much easy in rise than in world, with the clutch claw and tenderising the parts, it was much more deliberate hunts

u/aperfectbox 10h ago
LBG has a bug circle thing that gets you out of danger and a dash that you can run a blast out of that can counter most charges.

FU Tigrex with that bitchass choo choo move it loves to do in tight spaces, also spent a long time with Cephadrome, dunno why maybe I'm just plain stupid back then. Still finished the game tho, so plain stupid but willpowered my way through it or some bs.

u/Emergency-You-4440 14h ago
My original hurdle in tri was barroth and later diablos. Usually it’s monsters that require you to switch playstyles
3
u/iratedolphin 13h ago
Pink rathian was the first one I actually had to learn. Prior missions could be limped through without studying the critters pattern.

u/Bigas106 12h ago
Lunastra on world. That MF made me actually stop think about my build and skills for the first time.
Up until then it was "If i just hit the thing and try not to get hit, it will die eventually"
Yea, try getting close to hit it when half the arena becomes a sea of flames. And try dodging that supernova after getting stunlocked by the fucking wind

Magnamalo in Rise (hub, not village, I only started village well into high rank), I tried everything I could for a week until I gave up and used a bowgun (tbf it was my first game)
It didn't feel good to use it. I regularily kick his ass with gunlance now though so.

I struggled with Anjanath, tobi etc but never carted to them. Odogaron was the first monster for me which was like genuinely difficult. I couldn’t even see this guy, and then I switched to dual blades and it got much better for me.
Biggest wall was those two tempered beetlejuice, Two Japanese guys came and saved me, right when I was about to cart. It was like a movie, that fight. World was such a fun game. So much cool memories.

nothing, *N O T H I N G* even come close on how this bastard gatekeep me from playing the rest of the game back in 2 dos. I legit spent 2 weeks to prep for this bastard because machalite ore was somewhat rarer than fatalis's balls. there was no freaking farm back then mind you, so you have to do some random gathering quest and check T H R E E mining spot with around 0.025% chance for it which only drop at reasonable rate in certain season and weather btw and it wasnt even for a thunder weapon which it's weak to, it was one upgrade below it (iron katana -> eager cleaver).
there was no google or phone capable of browsing either because internet was such a luxurious item back in the day so I have to go to the internet cafe which is not even an option for me because I am a poor sod with barely enough pocket money to survive school, all the information was from someone shady with a print out chart of various information like weapon tree, monster weakness and where to find what. information was pretty much scarce back then. now you can just pull out youtube and have 10 different dude giving you tips and shit on how to exploit what monster and suck your own dick and whatnot.
now that I look back on it, I am so glad that I persist on fighting that twat and managed to defeat him on my own term. because I dont think I will ever be in this community right now.

Tigrex in MHFU. Fuckin Beast.
He was just like a fuckin Wall, because of his fast moveset.
It was just insane, i bonked Diablos in the guidhall so much easier than the fuckin tigrex. I needed a friend who killed him for me, to progress in the story.
Fuck i still hate this bastartd today.

Barioth, o miserável me fez ficar careca de tanto estresse, principalmente por ser main GL, o fato dele ficar pulando de um lado pro outro no mapa quebrava o meu combo.

Odogaron is the Monster that I enjoy fighting the most in World. It was nice seeing a new version of it in Wilds.
2
u/alchemical_lore 5h ago
For me it was Tigrex in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I was solo, using hunting horn, which was really bad in that game. I eventually beat it and once I did, I don't think I've been walled by anything ever since.

Tigrex back in MHFU literally made me use ranged weapons that i hated back in the day because his hitbox was so lame that being close to him for me meant death. I remember obliterating him with flash bombs and my hbg. Then when i played portable 3rd for the first time i was so relieved when i saw that his hitbox was finally normal and i could bonk him to death

Velkhana in world: iceborne, flaming espinas in rise: sunbreak and omega in wilds
1
u/Apocadou 13h ago
Raging brachydios, I haven’t managed to solo it yet. Odogaron was also a tough fight because I was playing GS the first time, so my only move that I managed to connect was the claw attack, but later when I switched to dual blade the fight became way easier, with also an honorable mention to poison Tobi and Barioth who were really hard because my stuff when I fought them was still HR

u/NinjaSquid_G 13h ago
Barioth handed me my ass on a plate last week, making me cart 3 times in my 1st failed quest. I was reasonably intimidated by the prospect of fighting Flying Wyvern proper, but i got cocky after hunting Khezu and Basarios. I did beat him 2nd try but safe to say i'll be aproaching hunts with a lot more care now.

u/Jesterchunk It's morphin' time 13h ago
the gendrome capture quest back in 4U walled me for a while, although that was less the monster and more capture mechanics. The first time the monster itself was a big wall was probably Deviljho back in Generations. Dude took forever to bring down solo and I wasn't in any hurry to do it again once I did bring him down.
Imagine my surprise when GenU rolled around and I almost halved my kill time on him. Savage is another matter though, I still haven't gotten round to beating him since he's more or less exclusive to event quests.
1
u/GODATUTE 13h ago
Mhfu kirin, i was omega ass at timing and aiming my ls (since it was my first game) so i had to switch to poison sns which doesnt bounce on the body
1
u/CoconutSnacks 13h ago
Probably the anger pickle. Razor dog is my favorite monster to hunt, think I’ve killed it more than any other
1
u/SSJAncientBeing 13h ago
The first real wall I hit was Primordial Malzeno, but that doesn’t even feel fair to call since it is a bonus title update DLC superboss
So for walls that don’t fill that role, I’m going back to World. People said Anjanath was the first big wall, but after Rise I was familiar enough with what he did. But no one, not a soul, warned me about Legiana. And I’ll admit it’s like a top 10 monster for me now, but that think probably killed me like 15 times before I won

u/Jnunez7660 13h ago
I love odog. I think when I 1st saw him, I was like 'god, that is a beautifully angry beast. It moves like the windddddd'. Love this dude. I think i had a rough time with urgaan in master. Once the jaw is gone, we good. It made me hammer main for a while.

The first time seeing Lagiacrus in 3u. 3u was my first monster hunter game and I wanted to see if I could actually kill lagiacrus after one of the characters said I had to run away instead because I had come to the series from dark souls 1.
I was so wrong and it made me stop playing the series until World came out(i had tried getting back into the series with 4u and gu prior but the 3ds controls annoyed me not to mention a friend lost my 3ds when I let him borrow it)

u/Western-History-1846 12h ago
Deviljho. I'm afraid of going near that thing.
Odogaron actually became my easiest monster to deal with after harvesting him the third time for his armor. I love that murder puppy!!

u/Shadow_realm_king 12h ago
Really don't care how many people say he was easy, high rank Teostra gave me a run for my money first time ngl

u/Mobby379 Master of the 12h ago
Personally? Going from those i remember.
World: kushala, because it’s just such a annoying fight.
Iceborne: barioth, i had some struggles with.
Rise: magnamalo, stopped playing for a while and was rusty when i fought him.
Sunbreak: espinas, same reason than rise
Wilds: Nu Udra, because i wasn’t used to the new monster type movement.
1
u/Eldermage1 12h ago
Barioth in Iceborne, Brachydios in 4U. Ironically never had any trouble with either outside of those games.

No one in MH history came close to making me rage from trying to beat them the first time like Barioth and Alatreon, these two are monsters I thought are unkillable

The royal Ludroth in Tri, the Anjanath in World and in Wilds it was Nu Udra

Ha. Rajang will always be the one for me. Other monsters can be very hard and humble me, but then I can spend hours to get it eventually, out of pure spite lol. But rajang ??? Just how we say in my language, he sweeps the floor with my body everytime. I got my revenge in rise, but I know the fucker was way weaker than it should have been.
1
u/ShadowsGuardian 11h ago
Anjanath, B52 bomber and the angry green pickle 🥒 made me go back to reaaally learn um weapon.
Granted MH World was my first game, so I'm still a neeb compared to you all.

Almudron in Rise. My first cart in Rise was to Magnamalo, but Almudron was the first monster to cart me twice. I actually had the fear of failing the hunt instilled in me because of Almudron.

Rajang from freedom Unite I still hate the guy even though I can defeat him without a problem
1
u/GrandWizardOfCheese 10h ago
Diablos had be upgrading my armor for the first time, when I got to odogaron, its armor carried me all the way to beating behemoth and xeno jiiva, then the behemoth armor let me beat extremoth and carried me to ebony odogaron, and ebony odogaron armor carried me to beating safi jiiva, then I used safi jiiva armor to beat everything else including fatalis, which was used for my final armor set.
I'd say that beating high rank extremoth with high rank draken set was probably the biggest hurdle out of all of it.
Second biggest is probably arch tempered master rank Kushala, and Alatreon is third.
Wind mechanics and MMO arena nuking ults are the most OP shit monsters can do in world.
And this opinion is formed while acknowledging that Lunastra exists.

Nergigante was a hurdle for me especially cause the person who got me into the game told me the only “good” weapon was Great Sword so I suffered having to fight him with a weapon I hated but now I use Gunlance and Dual Blades and mop the floor with Nergigante

Not anymore obviously but this takes me back to first trying mh3 on 3ds at 13. Could barely play the game and I got so upset at cephadrome lmao. Didnt understand why he wouldn’t get out of the sand for me to hit it

u/blockprime300 8h ago
I found odogaron quite easy, rathalos diablos and the double tempered Kirin were massive blocks

Khezu in Freedom Unite. He taught me that sometimes you have to go back to earlier hunts to get better armor... after I failed the mission six times.
1
u/Creative-Dragon2479 8h ago
Khezu in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on psp... Still haven't beaten him as I became so deflated
I now murder all of the Khezu I see on MH Now and in MHS 3
1
u/Zuper_Dragon 7h ago
Legiana, wasn't use to fighting something that stayed in the air for 90% of the fight and got so tilted I spent a whole day farming it until I got every armor piece I could craft so I would never have to willingly fight it again.
1
u/Shadowrun29 7h ago
Back in world it was Nergy for me. Bro just too aggressive and spikes everywhere. I was using bow then.
In MH4U it was Gore Magala. Mh3U it was f'in Gobul.
In mhgen valstrax. Then in sunbreak probably magnamalo at first, but once you fight him a handful of times, he's ok to get used to the moves and attacks. For wilds, it was zoshia.

Stygian Zinogre in MH4U, in other game he's hard but still feel managable, in 4U he's simething else.

Odogoran was the first time I failed a quest because boy was fast and it took me way to long to figure out how to stop bleeding! Though admittedly I beat the brakes off him so many times by the time I quit world that I’m pretty sure I could beat him blindfolded with every weapon available 🤣 i think the next real hurdle I had was the red and then the blue lion! Screw Both those guys! I never could get gud at those fights for some reason
1
u/Ornery_Blueberry1541 1h ago edited 1h ago
ceadeus in tri granted i didn't know anything about armor skill or upgrading and just went for what looked cool. did the same with weapons which lead to me using the dual rathblades against him with pretty weak armor. eventually beat him without any change of strats just slamming my skull into the brickwall
the only other brickwalls were crimson quarpeco but i was solo so makes sense. shagaru in 4 where I learned about upgrading armor but still nothing about skill then. finally xeno when i fully understood everything but just couldn't break past him for a little while.

Black Diablos and Lunastra in world, I think mentally I had locked down a regular diablos and Teostra moveset so adapting to them took a few hunts

Odogaron also had me on the first couple of tries. Got past it on the third try after carting twice. Afterwards I decided that I would farm it for the armor and weapons. I got to the point where I memorized every pattern and could fight it without it laying a claw on me. Good times.

Double G Rank Brachydios in 3U was annoying. Gogmazios in 4U was also painful alone with no Demolisher

u/MostInnocentSimp I use dual blades to feel like Kratos 13h ago
There is a reason only fought Diabolus, Nargacuga, Barioth and Tigrex once
Anjanath, Vaal hazak and Nergi were Hurdles too but I had to farm them for gear soooooo
-1
u/Unit_with_a_Soul 14h ago
my first real wall was Diablos in world
or well, technically it was Gore in 4U, but i only played that while waiting for world to release and haven't tried again since then.
-1
u/Duellly 14h ago
Never had any. Unless you count like Alatreon and Fatalis solo, but those are the least two big ones.
Nothing in 3U really took me to the timer or triple carted me. In 4U im sure I would have struggled in G Rank solo but had teammates for that. In Rise everything is easily to solo with all the hunting helpers and endemic life knockdowns. And again, the very endgame fights were the hardest (Risen Shagaru and Valstrax in particular). In World I wanted the Odo armor really bad so I downloaded his moves in the first few hours fighting him. One of the best fights in that game tbh. And MH Wilds is a mess of unbalance so im not even going there.
2
u/Altruistic-Willow265 11h ago
How did you solo alatreon i gave up on world during that fight but recently came back
1
u/Duellly 11h ago
Oh buddy trust me. It took a long time. I ended up just multiplayering it and coming back you beat it solo. Im not god gamer. I find the newer MH games much harder than the old. I didnt mention I played Generations but I didnt get far before 3DS broke. Trying to get a switch to go back to it haha.
2
u/Altruistic-Willow265 6h ago
I have the opposite where I played generations ultimate but my swotch broke lol. Any tips for how you solo'ed it?
1
u/Duellly 4h ago
Ngl I really just cranked elemental damage and would swap builds for the opposite element he changed modes. And honestly it was just a lot of memorizing moves. He's a scary fight but once you have the moves and their timings drilled any fight becomes easier. I would also intentionally enrage it at the start of the fight by clutching it and making it turn a bunch of times to activate Agitator immediately. Frostfang weapons go crazy against it in its first element form.
