Discussion FOMO in motion

I’m kinda new to motion design. I did different art projects before, and now I’m pushing everything into motion design. Learning AE and Blender, filling in the gaps.
And I have this HARD FOMO about all the instruments and the whole industry. I’m not afraid of AI tools I believe a pro stays relevant if they’re flexible enough.
But God, there are SO many new features every week!!! A new Blender addon, a new feature in Rive, a new AI assistant in After Effects, new plugin…
It is so intense! Especially when you’re just starting.
Do anyone have the same feeling?

Basics. Typography. Shapes. Composition. Animation Principles. When someone has all flashy design skills (ie whatever is cool or trendy at the minute) but they lack the fundamentals, it really stands out. I can't tell you how annoyed I get when the text isn't right, or there is a spelling mistake in a video. Most people don't know when to use you're and your.

Yeah I had that feeling when I was full-time and starting out. Since going freelance in ‘22 I now have the bandwidth to dabble in a different tool or feature whenever I get the itch. The fomo is still present tho but just in different flavors.

I’d say my fomo these days is directed at friends who are working on projects with challenging projects to solve when I’m working on a run of the mill gig

I have definitely had the feeling, but the best thing is to stop looking at flashy things. Strong fundamentals in design and animation will outperform any of these new things - and they will translate between software, and stay relevant through time.
