Fog of War Keeps Evolving: Live Player View, Tactical Sync and a Faster Interface
Fog of War Keeps Evolving: Live Player View, Tactical Sync and a Faster Interface
Here’s a much shorter update that keeps the main new capabilities and the spirit of the original.
Fog of War: Live Player View and a Faster Tactical Interface
The Fog of War tool has received quite a workout during the summer.
What started as a simple way to cover and reveal a map has grown into a lightweight tactical companion with tokens, initiative, measurements, statuses and now a live synchronized player display.
The latest updates concentrate on two things: sharing the action with the players and making the GM interface faster during actual play.
Live Player Display
The biggest addition is the Live Player Display.
Start a Live Session and Fog of War creates a unique player URL and QR code. You can put the player view on a TV or second monitor, or simply give players the link for their phones, tablets or laptops.
Players see the revealed map and only the tokens they are supposed to see. Hidden tokens and GM-only information stay on the GM side.
So the ogre behind the ruined wall remains your little secret until it becomes everybody’s problem.
With Auto Sync, reveals, token movement, zooming and GM measurements can appear automatically on the player display. Players also have their own local ruler for answering that eternal question: “Can I reach it this round?”
Faster at the Table
The GM interface has been reorganized into Tools, Tokens, Initiative and Session tabs, reducing scrolling and keeping setup controls out of the way during combat.
Initiative can now be edited directly in the list and automatically reorders itself. Right-clicking a combatant there opens its tactical controls for statuses, torches, names and other token operations. The active combatant is clearly highlighted both on the map and in initiative.
Statuses are now available through a compact quick grid, and the interface has been improved for tablets with larger touch targets and more readable labels.
There are plenty of smaller improvements too: sensible default token facing, consolidated help and shortcuts, better tactical-state persistence and a new secure contact form for feedback and bug reports.
Keeping GM Secrets Secret
The player display follows a fail-closed approach: if something should not be visible, it should never reach the player view.
This included fixing a particularly devious case where the torch carried by a hidden creature could reveal fog.
Hidden monsters may once again lurk professionally.
From Map Veil to Tactical Companion
Fog of War still isn’t trying to become a complete VTT. The goal is narrower: provide the tactical pieces useful alongside a physical or online Mythras game without moving the whole campaign into a VTT ecosystem.
Load a map. Hide it. Reveal it. Add combatants. Track initiative and conditions. Measure distances. Give the players their own live view. Then get back to the game.
