Weird bug, may be exploitable ?

While building a base and making a tune in it, I had a weird thing happen : A Bytebeat device that's not connected to others has access to the synchronizer (?!).

It's connected to power, and to 6 Bytebeat switches that manage light floors. The cables between the device and the switches go through another device, this one connected to others. Both these devices are scaled up to max size using wire glitch.

I want to test if this is doable on a consistent basis, and I ask of you, kind and wholesome and really really nice reader, to test this as well in your game.

If me and a few other persons are able to do it, that means we could have a way to get a device with its own key / tempo to play exactly when we want in the loop, without having to set up a "mirror device". Imagine the possibilities.

The exact build I'm talking about is in the screenshots. I'll get back with an update once I do my testing !

Update : Just realized it affects the switches too. If I have a BB cable going from a device to a switch and clipping through another device, the switch is triggered by both devices' notes and beats. Have more testing to do :)

That would definitely be interesting! I imagine you’re still bound to the 8 per base limit though?

I can tell you what I know about this.

There is a way to make 'single' devices appear in the synchroniser and that's to use remote devices. It's even possible to have 8 (but no more) devices concurrently sounding all in different keys and all appearing in the synchroniser! Naturally given its HG bytebeat, there is a downside! and that's they won't save properly to your or anyone else's library. This didn't used to be the case prior to sometime in 2024.

You can do all sorts of fancy things using devices that, while they don't play, still affect devices that do. As well as 'single' devices appearing the arpeggiator, you can control a noise box remotely with patterns that aren't in your actual tune (used that in my last tune). You can even have one device control another through a bytebeat switch making it play different length notes in the same device! I know this sounds impossible but it is doable although there are significant downsides and limitations.

There's too much to go into here but there's a whole chapter on these techniques in my guide. Happy to explain further.

As for switches, its worth knowing that devices that are inter connected with the pink data cable will all affect the switch. So for example, if you have a bytebeat switch attached to a device to activate on the note C, but that device is also attached with a data cable to another device that also plays C, then you will get both devices triggering your switch. Historically I seem to remember it was worse, and even power cables would allow switch data to be shared. I don't think that's the case any more and it's just pink data cables. So when you're using switches you need to be mindful of how your devices are connected.

One final thing, devices that are very close together horizontally will be treated as though they are connected. In other words if you free place a device v.close to another they will both appear in the synchroniser etc. (This doesn't appear to occur with enlarged devices for some reason).

I'm not aware of further effects caused by enlarged devices, but that doesn't mean they can't happen. Things do change, and updates often inadvertently make changes to things unconnected with the update! I guess what I'm saying is carry on experimenting and let us know what you find.

Thank you for all the insight and knowledge ! I wasn't sure if it was something new or not, as you say updates are known to provoke unintended changes sometimes.

I figured that devices being very close behave as if they're connected, as it's the same for anything with a connector : pill lights, prefabs, etc. And I think it's probably a similar behavior that causes the cables to share data. Can get in your way fast if it's not planned though, as apparently I couldn't place a BB cable on a surface and make it transmit data, like power cables do.

I don't know if scaling the device makes anything behave differently, outside of powering it but that's not new. Haven't got around to testing everything yet, I'm focusing on finishing the base and the track.

That's a good point about the pill lights etc. getting nearby power - I'm sure you're right, although there are some oddities - like you can stack devices vertically without the effect?!

I have scaled devices and switches in the past (mostly smaller), but these days it's so much more fiddly as the connection points are offset. (For anyone who started playing fairly recently, just look at an old tutorial video on YouTube and be amazed at how easy it was to connect multiple wires even close together). Weirdly, you rarely see this mentioned in things people would like fixed - maybe that's indicative of how few players spend time wiring stuff - i don't know.
