The [Mod] Hunt is Over - Welcome Our 2 New Mods!

Two new mods are joining the crew: u/InvincibleDream and u/nostramochick.

u/InvincibleDream has been running CSM-flavored Night Lords since 4th edition and has taken the faction to local and international events.

u/nostramochick has been a fixture in the comments here for years, across two accounts, which is exactly the kind of participation that matters more than a post history full of army shots. They're also on London time, which closes the coverage gap that has left the sub unwatched for a chunk of every day.

We are also working on a proper FAQ, which will enable some automation of "noob" posts and help guide new players to the right places, as well as answer a lot of frequent questions. Stay tuned for that!

Ave Dominus Nox.

Over a couple months of work, here's my painted night lords army! All of this was done by myself, with the exception of the Lascannon/Plasma Defiler where a buddy of mine did it. This is currently being run as Veterans of the Long War, with Cabal of Chaos!

Kravek Morne and Huron, while not Night Lords are a helpful addition as well.

Used sponges on these and I was over the moon with the result they gave me! Far different than my standard paintjob so I think my Night Lords will be looking like this going forward.

I wanted to link this knight to my Night Lords army, but really didn't want to paint the whole thing midnight clad. So the obligatory lightening and NL emblem on the shield are the visual connectors.

I can't help myself and tend to overkill my models. I just couldn't leave those metal tentacles in the box unused. They exist to catch fleeing soldiers to be flayed later.

I have to admit, I think it has turned out alright. Definitely better than the models I was painting a year ago. I especially like poor Dave, who fell into the barbed wire trying to escape the knight.

Lore My take on Night Lord "music"

After reading the Talos Series and Konrad Cruze Primarch book, I feel like the music from Nostromo would align with Narco Corridos. Being on the Mexican-Texas Border and growing up around the significant rise of cartels, it mirrors a lot of what's been going on for a while and l can't help but draw the connection.

What are y'all's take?

Lore Heresy Era NL Company Size

Hi all. Do we have any solid information on a NL heresy era company size? My army is 30k Night Lords lost to the warp until the 41st millennium and I'm struggling to find information as to what size I should eventually( big eventually) build my company to. Any advice would be welcome so I may stand in midnight clad with you all.

It’s the brightest armour I’ve seen on night lords and it’s my favourite way it’s done. But I’m not sure how to paint it. I love the dark armour. But something about this brightness just hits

Hobby & Painting Hear me out on this Proxy:

Post image
402 Upvotes

Hello everyone, Iet me sum-up:

I'm currently in the early stages of building an entire Night Lords Warband as a full-year project for 2027 (as I'll be done with my pile of shame by then).

My idea is basically to make the band be composed of the remnants of a Night Lords Company involved in the Battle of Beta-Garmon.

I have already stablished a definite enough sample for the lore, but I am now doing List-Building and seeing what I can use to proxy certain more "chaotic" units into regular Scouring-Era marines...

But turns out I'd really like a Daemon Prince with Wings so... Do you think a brainwashed, flying murder-machine suffering from the black rage could pass for a Khorne Daemon Prince with some Night Lord Upgrades?

(Basically put, the band pulled a Blood Raven on the Dreadnought and now they throw it in the general direction of something they want gone.)

Hobby & Painting Painting NL in 30k is hard

I have been painting Night Lords since the second edition, and in my opinion, they might be the most challenging Legion in the Horus Heresy when it comes to painting. I have reworked my models many times because I simply haven't found a colour scheme that I am truly happy with. Of course, the choice of bits plays a major role from the very beginning. The gap between a wide selection of more neutral 30k bits and overly elaborate, bloody skin flaps and wings is so narrow that, over the last few years, I have either seen a lot of evil Ultramarines or bloody Cringelords. There are several aspects of painting them that I find particularly challenging.

1. Midnight blue. Hardly any Legion has such challenging colour transitions in its primary colour as the Night Lords. Midnight blue ranges from almost black in the deepest recesses to a vivid blue-green in the highlights. Without proper airbrush application, this is difficult to achieve, which is probably why I have seen so many evil Ultramarines in Dark blue.
2. Lightning. Light effects on miniatures are extremely challenging—at least for me. Lightning is an essential part of the Night Lords aesthetic and is practically indispensable. Most of the time, however, I don't see Night Lords with lightning; I see models with white brush strokes. My own models have very little lightning because I am simply terrible at painting it.
3. Skin. Skin and body parts are especially common among the elite units. They create an absolute contrast to the armour and are challenging because the bright skin immediately draws the viewer's attention. What does dried skin actually look like? Is it preserved, and if so, with what? Does such a preservative exist in our world? Is the skin fresh? Is it older? If I can't paint flayed skin properly, I end up ruining the whole model because of the strong contrast.
4. Decals. The Night Lords have some fantastic decals, but the decal sheet—with its red and black designs—doesn't really complement the large areas of the primary colour. Then there is the contrast created by the red. Those vicious, dark murderers can very quickly end up looking like people dressed for Halloween.
5. Blood. While some people seem to dunk their entire model in blood and gore, it already seems difficult enough to add blood effects to preserved skin convincingly. Many paint and hobby manufacturers promote dedicated products for creating blood effects. But as soon as you overdo it, you inevitably start drifting towards the absolute Cringelords.

I still take a lot of time when painting my Night Lords, but naturally that means I don't make progress very quickly, and I'm not always happy with my results. Nevertheless, I'm happy for everyone who has fun with the Night Lords and enjoys the hobby. Feel free to share whether you've experienced similar difficulties and whether you have any tips.
