Most who cover this song can't play the intro the Thompson does. Rolling Stone ranks him as the 62nd greatest guitar player of all time noting "no one knows how many tears have been shed by players trying to nail “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.”"

Del Mccoury Band has a beautiful rendition. Del’s high lonesome sound captures that song so well.

He wrote it and I've seen him perform it many times. The last few he's had to rub his hands afterwards, it's very difficult to do right.
