We do have Funhouse Lounge, which has a disturbingly large number of clown paintings. Perhaps the city decided it's best to keep its clowns well contained.
True. She went by “Sparkles, aka Lucky.” She didn’t do anything professionally, just went to hospitals with some friends. She had some pretty funny routines and I still have her nose somewhere. When she passed and we were waiting for the funeral director, I was cracking up my brother and sister by threatening to put on her clown shoes before they took her. Don’t judge, she would have been laughing, too.
Lol. A friend of mine graduated from a legit Circus school and it's always funny when people ask her what her degree is in.
"Oh, I have a Bachelor's of Performance in Circus Arts." (I forget the degree name but it's something similar)
Not only does she say this very seriously, she takes her art very seriously, which leads to uncomfortable chuckles followed by uncomfortable conversations for the people that chuckle.
She did Cirque du Soleil type of acrobatic work and made great money doing it before getting injured.

My husband's grandma was a graduate from there as well, and went by Miss Fishy! She volunteered her time after retirement. Really wonderful funny lady.
It's so important to honor someone's essence and sense of humor.
My dad always liked dad jokes and dumb humor. When he was brain dead for two days, waiting for organ collection, I always told the nurses when I'd run to the restroom, "Make sure he doesn't get up to anything now while I'm away". That's the kind of jokes he would have been making in that situation.
You know those fake glasses with the big nose and eyebrows/mustache? My aunt was a teacher, and when her students would not pay attention, she would put one of those on and teach as if nothing was different. It always cracked the kids up. She was very beloved.
At her funeral, everyone wore those glasses. She would’ve loved it.
My grandma was in a nursing home (that I visited twice a day) when she died. We got the call that she had passed so me, my mom, and my aunts and uncles went there and were in the room...with her still in there. My uncle and I started going back and forth about what she would be like in the afterlife and we laughed so damn hard. It was celebrating her instead of mourning. She didn't want to be cried over when she died but we still cried from laughing and it felt great.
One of my uncles has a really dry sense of humor. At my grandmother's grave side thing, he noticed I looked nervous and asked what was up. I told him cemeteries in general just freaked me out because it's like I can feel my shoes sinking into the lawn/graves. He just looked at me and said, "would you like me to bring you a bunch of balloons to the next time this happens so it's more cheery for you?" and then just grinned. Now, I always think of that interaction when I'm creeped out in graveyards. It actually did help!
I'm so sorry for your loss. What year did your mother pass away? Reason I'm asking is because 1998 was the year I finally had stable full time employment. And 1998 still feels (to me) like it was five years ago, not 28.
Bless your mom. I mean it, honestly anyone who goes to hospitals to cheer them up is a legend. She was already cool but cool factor multiplication activated by doing hospital entertainment.
She sounded awesome and a joy to be around. Can imagine she made a lot of people happy! The loss of a parent can be so awful but a little less awful when you realize the hurt is because we were so lucky to have them.

My mom, brother and myself graduated from clown college in 1999. Petunia, Penny and Rags were our names. I was 11 years old. My mom went on to actually be a clown and made in the ball park of 100k a year. I did not ever do a single event. 😬
When my mom retired, the first thing she did was go to clown college.
Not long after her first paying birthday party, she quickly discovered that people (especially children) are in fact terrified of clowns and hung it up not long after.
My dad did a summer clowning course at university through the drama/ed psychology dept when I was in my early twenties. Graduation day was a performance for friends and family in the personas they had developed and we had to sing the circus song when each student came out to do their thing (do do doodle oodle do do doodle 🎵
Omg! I’m also a clown school graduate. A went to Mooseburger University. It was later turned into a camp. I’m sure she knew some of the same people I knew back then. So cool!
I genuinely miss this era of clowns. The costumes were so bold and vivid. I went to the circus (Ringling) for the first time in forever this past January and the clowns were weird, dressed like little boys or something.
I have a neighbor who went to clown college. Best part is I found out from one of her coworkers at a random eye doctor appointment (he was wearing their company book store logo in the waiting room). I still haven't let her know that I know. I just drop hints when I see her in the hallway. "How's your day?" "Oh you know me, I'm just clownin' around." "Crazy weather today, right?" "Oh yeah! It's a circus out there!"
