Tremendous! That is tremendous!

Twice the flavor and half the time for the girl on the go!

This dress exacerbates the genetic betrayal that is my legacy.

I could never understand how she was supposed to be the plain looking one in "The truth about cats and dogs"

527

u/Bulky-Strategy-3723 Aug 02 '26

They tried to convince us she was ugly.

331

u/abibofile Aug 02 '26

Sadly, Hollywood ugly is normal people stunningly beautiful. Still is.

117

u/Futuristic-Slice Aug 02 '26

Yeah, just slap some glasses on a supermodel. That’ll do it.

46

u/thisismeritehere 29d ago

And paint on the overalls… 🤮

15

u/SpyroTheNotDragon Aug 02 '26

Better yet, get some badly fitting clothes and maybe put them in sweatpants and a hoodie with a messy ponytail and no make up.

Anyone else but Hollywood would think that person looks just fine, but Hollywood would be like eww get this goblin out of my face!

There’s a content creator who has found their way into my feed who is doing a segment called “fixing my millennial brain” basically about how gaslit we all were growing up in the 90s and 00s wrt women’s bodies. It’s honestly a pretty eye opening series, worth a google search.

She did, she avoided romantic roles in purpose and even tried to give the ending of "the truth about cats and dogs" a depressive sad ending.

18

u/friendlynbhdwitch Aug 02 '26

Yeah, she’s never known how pretty she is.

6

u/Sarrdonicus 29d ago

I saw her on Wheel of Fortune, she does

u/Germanofthebored Aug 02 '26

Especially since Uma was sporting this vapid, disaffected facial expression throughout the movie.

18

u/Ayle87 Aug 02 '26

She was supposed to have a more boring personality I think that is what she's aiming for.

13

u/Germanofthebored Aug 02 '26

You are right; what I should have said is that the Uma character has a vapid, disaffected look. And yes, the character is a model, and that's what is required.

I feel stupid for confusing the character an actor/actress plays with the person themselves

u/toolsoftheincomptnt 29d ago

I like Uma, she’s rad. And gorgeous in the way she carries herself.
But agreed on the face.

You see, she’s blonde/blue, which is +100 beauty points pretty much the world over. The actual shape and arrangement of features is irrelevant.

Exhibit B: Sydney Sweeney.

3

u/RipOdd9001 29d ago

You could also say Ellen Barkin was in this category but I’ve always thought she was quite attractive.

The 90s and 2000s were notorious for this. She's all That is another movie that tried to pull this off. That being said, I did enjoy the movie back then, and she did have a certain charm in that movie that made her more attractive. However, I never saw her look like she does in the picture on this post, nor have I ever seen her in a movie where she didn't look average for the times. She kind of got weird in the years that followed.

Edit: Before I torched in the comments, the overwhelming population of us on Reddit are average and there's nothing wrong with that.

5

u/Crafty-Message4564 29d ago

I would always see her talking negatively about her looks, and meanwhile, I thought she was really attractive.

3

u/TheDuchessoftheDark 29d ago

I guess it was because she was a brunette and she wore size 2 and not zero lol, these were the beauty standards for actresses at the time.

7

u/BrickTilt Aug 02 '26

100%. There’s a great Heavyweight episode about this IIRC

I used to run into her a bunch at my old job. This was around 2008. She was doing some work with an editing studio that had an office in my building and I became friendly with some people there after buying some used sound equipment from them. I would occasionally hang out there and shoot the shit with them and eventually Janine. She's sharp af and damn funny.
The first time we met was when she witnessed me unsuccessfully attempting to ask out someone from the editing studio. Which she later made good natured fun of me for when we were in the same elevator. I dig her.
We didn't become friends or anything. It was just a fun moment in time that lasted a few months.

120

u/willflameboy Aug 02 '26

It's criminal she doesn't get more credit for her standup. She is easily up there with the best.

86

u/4tlant4 Aug 02 '26

She definitely gets credit from other comedians at least. I've heard several interviews where they say she was the patron saint of alt comedy in the 90s.

40

u/TheQuietDarkness70 Aug 02 '26

She was definitely the It girl of comedy in the 90s.

27

u/kindredfold 29d ago

Her role in Mystery Men was absolutely incredible.

7

u/TheQuietDarkness70 29d ago

That's actually my favorite thing of hers.

"models are genetic freaks"

20

u/franker Aug 02 '26

She would do a sort of pleasant rambling ranting that was a unique style. I remember one of her bits was "so I'm in my car playing with my imaginary tape deck on the dashboard, because the truck in front of me at the stop light has a cargo of Mexican workers all staring at me. Yeah that's always great."

7

u/BwDr 29d ago

The first time I saw her she was doing standup on some MTV spring break in Daytona or wherever thing. She was caustic and HILARIOUS. I have loved her ever since.

5

u/DeFLion 29d ago

I saw her a year or so back and she was effortlessly brilliant. She has a well deserved place in the pantheon of great standups IMO.

21

u/MirthandMystery Aug 02 '26

Genuinely cool, authentic, smart and nice, I worked for her briefly. Always like when the real ones got a little famous or known and their hard work paid off. Same time I saw hyper active Jimmy Fallon in the Wash Sq dog run with his friend (who had a dog), or Chloe Sevigny dashing to gigs or meeting friends. She had a sexy intense staring thing quickly sizing you up, funny times.

5

u/TheQuietDarkness70 29d ago

That. She could size up anyone or any moment and immediately have something both sharp and insightful to say. I never saw her being mean to anyone ever, but definitely humorously sharp. I liked her quite a bit. And yeah, it was nice to discover that she's as cool as she appears.

Steven: "There were no utensils but there was Pepsi?"

Server: "Dude, I got a lot of tables."

Anyone remember her on Air America in the oughties?

When she had that night show she would just sit there with the paper and comment on different stories. I would actually sit in a lawn chair in my driveway and listen to it on xm in my car. With a few drinks.

I more remember her on the show with Sam Seder. I wonder if that solo show is archived anywhere?

and you cannot be Mommy!

56

u/ebiscuits Aug 02 '26

She sounded so in character that it was only in the last month after looking over IMDB did I realize she voiced Colette:

Colette: What are you doing?
Linguini: [stammering] Uh, I'm cutting vegetables. I'm cutting the... vegetables?
Colette: No! You waste energy and time! You think cooking is a cute job, eh? Like Mommy in the kitchen? Well, Mommy never had to face the dinner rush when the orders come flooding in, and every dish is different and none are simple, and all of the different cooking times, but must arrive at the customer's table at exactly the same time, hot and perfect! Every second counts, you CANNOT be MOMMY!

158

u/OnyxLightning Aug 02 '26

One of the biggest lies of the 90’s was Hollywood trying to convince us that this beautiful woman was average, dumpy and ugly.

61

u/GreenZebra23 Aug 02 '26

It's really a testament to how perennially out of touch Hollywood is, because curvy, sarcastic alternative girls were really having a moment in the 90s, outside of Hollywood's clueless echo chamber

25

u/CalmBeneathCastles Aug 02 '26

It's a holdover from 80's propaganda. Pretty, fun girls were blonde and a size 0. Normal-sized (AKA "chunky") well-read brunettes were unattractive nerds and witches.

11

u/stopnthink 29d ago

I'll never understand the obsession with women having big chests and flat butts in the 80s/early 90s (I don't know if it was earlier). I mean, I understand the first half, but telling me that ass wasn't considered equal to or greater than is like telling me that Jesus wasn't in the Bible.

I read once before that it had something to do with racism (something about black women) but I don't know.

3

u/CalmBeneathCastles 29d ago edited 29d ago

Idk either, but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if that was where it came from. History is filled with stupid notions.

3

u/lyyki 29d ago

I think it comes from the thinness. The 90s were an incredibly thin decade. I'd imagine it's really hard to be paper thin and have the booty.

3

u/Illustrious-Peace989 29d ago

Jokes on them, I love nerds and witches

I want her to write a memoir

26

u/PerniciousVim Aug 02 '26

yeah what was the deal with her and Henry Rollins? Need answers.

27

u/indifferentunicorn Aug 02 '26

Ha I saw Henry Rollins do a Spoken Word gig where me and my 6 friends were half the audience lol

11

u/GodOfDarkLaughter 29d ago

Last time I saw him was like twenty years ago. I was REALLY late, like an hour and a half, and I was desperately hoping they'd waited at least a little while before starting. Rushing to the theater, got there super late, and as I was walking up to the door Henry Rollins walked out of the shadow with a cell phone in his hand and said "I'm so sorry! Don't leave! I had a hell of a time getting here, I PROMISE I'll just be a few minutes!" I said it was okay, he thanked me, and walked off on the phone ranting at someone.

I guess he was late too.

Good show. He actually didn't mention it starting late on stage. I guess the anxiety or whatever had gone down. And then he just talked for like four hours.

4

u/Kevin_Uxbridge 29d ago

Saw Rollins right around the same time at the Edinburgh Fringe. He was pretty good, did a solid hour and half of spoken word.

Coincidentally, Garofalo also did a show and she ... kinda stunk the place up a bit. Honestly thought she might be drunk.

39

u/Kindly-Statement-143 Aug 02 '26

9

I remember Jeneane talking about this period of her life saying she was the most unhealthiest she had ever been. She was trying to look the part for Hollywood but struggled with her health and had an unhealthy relationship with her body.

10

u/iatethething 29d ago

Every time I see her, I think of the Simpsons episode where they're watching her on TV and she opens with the line, "So I got my period today"

9

u/Darksmithe 29d ago

She's a good person. I remember her volunteering at the first-responder warehouse downtown, where donated goods actually made it to first responders. Not a sexy place to volunteer, and out of the public eye. Unlike other Hollywood types, she did it on the down low.

Didn’t Stiller dump her for someone else (now his wife) once he started getting more famous?

I think that might have been a personal and professional wall.

3

u/trimbandit Aug 02 '26

Well she is a-sexual so maybe that has to do with the stiller breakup

3

u/MasterBurner2 Aug 02 '26

I got a lot of tables man

3

u/Ssugna Aug 02 '26

Always thought she was a pretty woman😍

3

u/Slashman78 Aug 02 '26

I'm against the grain I know.. but she was so beautiful back in the 90's.

She really was captivating in quite a few things she did.. she just never fully embraced it :(. If she had someone boosting her confidence there's no telling how powerful she coulda been. She's in Sarah Silverman's league in terms of her prime looks imo being a comic. I gladly take arrows saying that too :). She was so stunning in Cop Land.

3

u/batting1000bob Aug 02 '26

A decent picture of her

3

u/DavidDGardnerII Aug 02 '26

She did a comedy show at a venue I used to work at, and it was frickin awesome. She's a wonderful person, was great to everyone on crew, and put on a terrific show. When she came in the room, she extended her hand to shake mine, and said "Hi, I'm Janeane". My goodness, the modesty necessary for her not to know that I've known exactly who she is for as long as I can remember having thoughts.

3

u/wildmaninid Aug 02 '26

Everyone tried to convince us Janeane wasn't a Gen X sex symbol.  One of my first celeb crushes.

3

3

u/Agreeable_Day4539 29d ago

I've seen her twice around town. She always looks pissed off. She is aging like most of us, badly. Last time I saw her was at a Trader Joe's, she looked angry. She's always been my favorite comedian tho.

3

u/tomjbarker 29d ago

Ive known her cousin most of my life but never met her, always thought she was beautiful

3

She's so fucking cool in person too. Met her at a house party in the early 2000s where she did an impromptu set for us. Chatted with her for maybe 10 mins about an hour after she was done. Badass chick for real.

She’s the total package. Funny, smart and beautiful. I always hoped I could meet someone like her.

She was always strikingly beautiful. Woman of my dreams for many years.
