There is something about… let’s call it “an edgy flirtyness” that helped the Dolly “brand” work well, so to have people forget about Carl is a good thing.
Also good he wasn’t jealous. (Not that we’d ever know, but I suppose Dolly would have toned it down.)

It blows me away that she didn't think she was naturally pretty. She was always gorgeous, but this one is actually natural, and if she's "plain," heaven help the rest of us!

u/PersisPlain - Not really. "Privacy" is a public figure (or any of us) choosing to keep their home life quiet. Beyond privacy and moving into something more like secrecy would be a hyper visible worldwide icon erecting a total information blackout on almost all aspects of who she is when the cameras are off--including a 60-year marriage. And meanwhile continuously leveraging the media strategically to sell a high-profile public image, the core element of which is selling themselves as a totally open book, everyday, accessible, down-to-earth figure.
I'm not besmirching Dolly Parton. But it's totally normal for the public to feel a sense of dissonance around the fact that massive and central parts of her reality weren't and aren't just somewhat (but 100%, utterly) hidden. It's actually quite a jarring contradiction that someone with such a downhome reg'lar "authentic gal" persona would have one of the most guarded and gated personal lives of almost any public figure, in recent history.
Of course it was her choice to do so, but it's not merely being "a private person living a private life." And so be it. RIP!

No it should not be totally normal for the public to feel that. The public should take a massive chill pill if that is the case. Also authenticity and voyeuristic levels of transparency about one’s going ons are completely different ideals.
She was authentically who she was. She was transparent about her persona being a persona, her performance a performance. Imo it’s tacky to feel entitled to access intimate parts of a persons life just due to their fame and cultural iconography. Especially post mortem.

I don’t think privacy makes a husband and white live apart in separate houses for decades. Dolly is an icon and national treasure for sure. But her marriage was extremely unconventional. Very easy to understand why it peaks the interest of so many.

I understand what you mean, but it's not a great comparison. Prince was famously protective of his privacy, but he gave hundreds of interviews over the years--and he did speak about his personal life in interviews. There are also countless photos of him with his family, friends, and partners across all eras. You can go to Getty or whatever that Prince online archive is and you'll see photos with Prince out and about, walking red carpets, at NBA games, dancing at events,on vacation, etc. Prince increasingly became reclusive--which wasn't Dolly's thing at all.

Sure--a lot of people married to public figures aren't interested in being a celebrity, but they don't miss every official public appearance nor do the never appear with them anywhere, any time, unofficially over nearly 60 years.

They were very private about their marriage and avoided letting it get in the way of each other's work. I was unaware that Dolly was married, let alone almost 60 years, until her husband Carl passed last year. Nor did Carl put himself in the public eye a lot.

I imagine when you're that famous, it's a pretty rare gift to give those private relationships space to exist outside the spotlight. They don't become just another aspect of your fame in media gossip and stories. The two people get to develop the relationship on their own terms. As an outsider, i always thought it was a sign of Dolly's deep respect and love for those people.

I can see why she was worried about Joelean Stealing Him because he was not a bad looking man!! Lol 🤣 TBH he kinda looks very much like my long distance Boyfriend only with brown hair instead of blonde so no wonder l like him!!! A handsome sweet cute WV born guy but raised in Western PA 😘😘😘

I know lots of celebrities use fake names at hotels. I wonder if Dolly ever just used her real name or came up with clever pseudonyms like others do.

It’s a little uncanny how much Miley Cyrus looks like her.. I know they are very distant relatives but I see it in all of the younger Dolly pictures.
