1960s My grandparents a few weeks before their wedding in 1961.

Post image

There's a bun in the oven in this pic 🤫 ( My uncle )

This is one of my favorite picture of them. At the beach in Lacanau, near Bordeaux in France.

EDIT: Wow, thank you all ! I really didn't expect this to blow up like that, it feels really good to share their story here, I didn't realize how much I needed to talk about them, kinda feels like a little therapy ngl.

Thank you all for your thoughts, kind words or being curious about these two amazing people 🩷

I agree they kinda look like italian starlets here. Very dolce-vita romantic. But we are french this was taken at Lacanau near Bordeaux

Did they stay together until the very end?

u/Littl3mata 1d ago

Yes, absolutely, and very deeply attached to the other. They both passed away a week apart from the other last year in march.

I’ll bet you have wonderful memories! Sorry for your loss, but I’m glad that neither one had to live without the other for very long.

u/Littl3mata 1d ago

A lunchbox

22

u/stq66 1d ago

Oh, would have thought that this is one of the old transistor radios.

The dude looks proper passionate here! It almost made me blush. This is like a smokin’ hot scene from a movie of that era! Reminds me a bit of the Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster tryst on the beach in From Here To Eternity.

u/Littl3mata 1d ago

Yes, and my grandpa had just finished his mandatory military service not long before this was taken, so he was in really great shape back in the day !

25

u/kissuu 1d ago

Such a wonderful photo! Is that a radio he's carry or a little lunch box?

3

u/stq66 1d ago

They look so in love ❤️ How old are they here?

65

u/Littl3mata 23h ago edited 23h ago

They deeply adored each other all their life.

She was 25 and He was 22 in here 😌

My grandfather was born something like 1 week or two before WW2 started in 1939, he really met his father at about 5 years old. My grandma was a bit older and she remembered more stuff from that time such as the rations and scarcity of food. That thing, plus going bankrupt at some point with my grandpa deeply marked her in her life and she always had her fridge full stuffed to the brim with fresh product and would cook us amazing food ! Sorry for the ramble, this picture and questions just brings back a lot of stories or memories x)

So sweet, always makes me happy to see a picture and know that the people in it remained in love and together.

How did their life together turn out?

They really went through it all, from rags to riches, I'd say. Happily married, 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and now 6 great-grandchildren.

They were incredibly close, almost symbiotic, very complicit idk how to say in english, they could never stay apart for very long. My grandmother Jacqueline was an amazing gardener and cook. Her garden from the house I've known was huge. She talked to her plants, complimented them, she always said it would help them grow better. She had entire folders of pictures of the flowers from her garden throught the years.

They both had a restaurant when my mom and her siblings were little, but it kinda failed and they lost pretty much everything. They had to go to Paris to work in hotels as housekeepers and electricians, away from their children for almost two years, just to rebuild what they'd lost. It was probably the hardest time of their lives, my grandma used to say they sometimes had to make soup with edible plants and flowers they picked in public parks or nearby forests, like dandelions. But they managed to turn things around. My grandfather Albert eventually got a job with a major electrical company and later started his own business.

Much later, in the late 80s, my grandma opened another restaurant with my mom and one of her brother, and this time it was quite successful.

They ended up living a very happy family life until the very end. Sadly, they both passed away last year in march, just a week apart from each other.. When I say they couldn't stay apart for too long 🥲 Yeah. Real fucking love right there, until the end.

Thanks a lot to yall it feels real good to talk about them 💖

u/zoinkability 15h ago

Brought sweet tears to my eyes. Having each other probably made a lot of those trials more bearable. And not having the other probably wasn't something either wanted, in the end.

My gran got married in a powder blue suit because it looked white in the photos... My father was a surprisingly large baby for one so early.

What amazes me of this time is that there were literally no “ screens “. I mean to imagine a world without internet is so alien to us all now.

I am a millennial so I I have experienced both side but still that world seems like a distant dream. Nostalgia run wild when I try to Think of that time.

Me personally am drenched in in digital tech internet world. And sure it’s a comfortable space. And necessary too. But whenever I see such pics my soul yearns to go to such times , don’t know
What it is , may be it’s the simplicity of things the calm pace of life , as if every minute is “ lived “.
And there is no hunger for newness in every second.

There's a bun in the oven in this pic

Lmao first thought looking at this photo was to make a comical comment inquiring whether they were hooking up prior to the wedding. But there it is, confirmed. Totally looks like the photo of a couple who got hot and heavy prior to the vows.

u/Bobby_Globule 1d ago

Anthony Quinn lookalike

5

u/sailormikey 1d ago

The size of that melon! His proportions, maybe from the angle, make it look like he’s got an enormous heed!
Nice about of passion in the smooch though

5

u/Littl3mata 1d ago

It’s probably my fault on that, I was holding the picture in my hand, it’s not a scanned photo, so I might have taken the picture from a slightly too high angle from my phone

5

u/ignusfast 1d ago

Is he trying to kiss her or suck out her soul? Nice picture, though. :)

4

u/L7yL7y 1d ago

Is she holding walkie talkie, tazer, or cordless/cell phone? I kid, but curious of what's in her hand.

14

u/Littl3mata 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s a hand fan. She use to have quite the collection and always one in her bag.

2

u/MapleTreeSwing 1d ago

Absolutely beautiful photo. Evocative of a great romance.

3

u/LoadedPizza010 17h ago

Such a wonderful picture.

4

u/Ludwig8734 1d ago

Nah that's Phil Dunphy

2

u/PatMyHolmes 1d ago

Looks like he's trying to suck her face off.

4

u/TinyFiona 1d ago

Your grandfather had a very large head.

2

u/HauntingBalance567 1d ago

Whoa! Look at the butt on them

1

u/BlackMagicWorman 1d ago

How short are they? Or is it the angle?

3

u/Littl3mata 1d ago

They were normal height lol as I've said to someone else I took a pic of the picture from my phone it’s not a scanned pic, I might have taken it at a too high angle ? Some people said he has a big head 🥲

2

u/paradisio691 18h ago
