The White Duke phase really worked, image wise.
That Mr. Bowie refused to settle into any one image over time was an act of real stubborn independence. He probably could have sold this one forever, but moved on to pastures new.

In response to a couple of strange comments here:
I'm not sure what motivates weird Redditors to see a photo of a beloved rock star in front of a huge crowd and think "this is bad, let me explain why in broken English", but, then again, it's Reddit.

How can something like this NOT lead to a person developing serious mental pathologies?
We all understand how a traumatic experience can damage a persons psyche. Just imagine how standing on a stage and seeing this, all of this people utterly devoted to you...
It has to be at LEAST as transformative mentally.
There's explicable reasons celebrities seem so different from the rest of us.

I knew a guy that was in an Australian band that had some big hits a couple of decades ago. Not famous outside of Aus but a huge big deal back then.l to a certain age group.
I met him as we both worked the same job, and then one day someone recognised him and absolutely freaked out. We got on well so he spilled and basically said he had a big pile of money but wanted this job for some normalcy. He said being on stage while 60,000 people screamed for you was the single most intense feeling a human can have, more potent than any drug high, but it also deeply messed with you psychologically.
So he needed something normal to get grounded again. I think he was fine with just living a low key life after that, it takes a very unusual person to life that life and remain sane (which is probably why so many stars dies young).

We were there: it was a great show by a great performer. The Beat as a support didn’t please everyone, but the TWD was on fine form.

My brother went and the people next to him filmed the gig on camcorder. He did get a VHS copy from them.

Love it. Not a fan of Bowie (apart from Life On Mars) but just look at that crowd. An age before horrible hand held technology spoilt THAT experience

Saw Metallica there 10 years later, which i believe was a 60,000 crowd, and there weren’t THAT many people in there. Have seen people telling stories of just giving beer to whoever was on the gate to get in.
Edit- i meant that to be that there were far more than 60,000 at the Bowie show, and the beer thing was at Bowie too.

I was there for Iron Maiden a few weeks back, also reckoned to be 55k+ and wasn't anywhere near this packed

Nah, Maiden a few weeks back was at Knebworth, that can hold 125,000 so lots of spare space.
I was on the rail though, so couldn’t really tell.

I was lucky, Knebworth was only 40 minutes down the A1 for me, and not the shit show of traffic that they apparently had from the south!
