Upgrading?

Hi all,

I currently have an EM5 mk2, I like it but I’m getting frustrated by it currently. I shoot landscapes, which is handles easily but I also photograph my family and I am also getting into wildlife photography too.

The AF for wildlife photography is appalling and even when photographing my family it really struggles to lock on sometimes and the moment has passed.

I am wondering what to upgrade to, I’m thinking either EM1 mk3 or OM5 but I cannot decide.

Those of you have those cameras, can you tell me what they’re like? On my EM5 I really like the weight and how small it is but I worry that the EM1 is too close to my other camera, which is a D600.

Wait til september 9. OM will announce its new pen format camera. Its small for sure, we will see the specs.

There’s gonna be two groups after the details drop: one that’s going get in line to buy the new PEN right away, and the other is going to buy used gear from the ones in the first group.

The E-M1 body is still much lighter and smaller than a DSLR, I wouldn't worry about that.

If you're on a budget, the E-M1ii is basically the same as the E-M1iii when it comes to wildlife and burst action, but significantly cheaper.

If you want an upgrade in autofocus for people and wildlife, you really want subject detection autofocus. Anything without it would be a side-grade.

E-M1 III and OM-5 (I or II) do not have subject detection autofocus. In OM, your choices are the OM-1 (I or II) or the OM-3. Or wait and see what they announce on September 9. Lumix isn't great either, they only have subject detection autofocus in the large and expensive G9 II and GH7. M43 in general is quite laggard in getting subject detection autofocus down into smaller, more affordable bodies.

On the contrary, the best autofocus, including subject detection, in small, affordable cameras is in APS-C cameras like the Canon R50/R10 and the Nikon Z50 II. Sony also has the A6700: it's pricier than the Canon or Nikon options, though it beats them in APS-C lens selection.

I'm a M43 fan and defender but no doubt they don't make it easy, with slow development and being behind in expanding modern features like subject detection autofocus down the product line.

To be honest though, I’m not after the best autofocus, I just want better than the contrast detect of the EM5.2.

I find I manage sufficiently well with my D600, but that has phase detect.

Like I say, I really like the M43 myself as I like the portability. Budget isn’t massive either and the sale of the EM5 will be partially offsetting any new purchase.

The EM5-2 still uses contrast af. The EM5-3 has pdaf so even that is a good upgrade. Anything newer will be better in that respect.

I have the OM5 miII, this was my first camera but the AF to me is good. I was at an airshow not long ago and the C-AF and using back button focus, locked on fine to anything flying past. I don't do portraits but it has auto face and eye detect but for objects Im happy with the AF on this. I’ve never used anything else so can’t compare it to anything else.
