Creative Writing ✏️✨

Has anyone studied the Creative Writing courses/ modules? What has your experience been?

I have a BA (Ordinary Degree) in Combined Arts from a different university and plan to apply for credit transfer/ advanced entry into the final year of Arts & Humanities and then apply for the MA.

Any info about what to expect would be welcome!

I’ve enjoyed it so far! There’s a lot of room to explore types of creative writing you maybe haven’t tried such as poetry or life writing. I’ve gone part time for the last year so I only have Creative Writing this academic year and then my last English Lit module (I’m studying English Lit + Creative Writing. Hoping to get an MA in Lit or Medieval studies.)

I would say the first CW module is very much giving the basics, and then followed with expository work on those skills and basics. The first few activities of the Advanced CW module have been a nice mix of exercises and research for broadening ideas.

Medieval studies sounds so cool omg. I'm wanting to do the CW MA if I can clear the bar for a 2:1, also currently going the English Lit + CW degree.

I’ve really grown to love medieval literature! Even if I do just an English Lit MA the uni closest to me does have modules where I can study medieval texts as modules which means I can broaden my field of study whilst indulging in something I love. Good luck with your degree/masters!

How was your journey studying english lit + cw as part time? Im guessing you did both part time and it became kinda like a full time studying right?
I am going to study english lit full time but i wanted to start in Feb part time and continue in october full time. But the idea of both degrees part time sounds smart too! How was financially?

I'm also doing part time study, so I only do one module at a time and I've found it more than manageable. I did CW last year, so my final module is a Lit module starting in Oct. Like anything, it's just planning ahead and granting yourself the time and space to study.

I started off as full time for the first two years and now I am going part time for the last one, splitting it into two years. For me it was too much for my mental health to do both subjects at once. I’d say first year try full time and see how you go. I got a part time student loan because OU is counted as such.

I've just finished Advanced CW and absolutely loved it (I had done the first CW module too, I'm doing English Lit and Creative Writing for my degree). I would always advise with the creative writing to start drafting early, as early as you can. Keep track in a notebook of the changes you make to your writing and why you made them, because the commentaries will rely on that creative decision making a lot. Trust yourself and your writing process.

Don't be afraid to engage on the forums for peer feedback (it's vital, even if you don't action every critique you are offered, again it's great material for your commentaries).
