Question or Discussion Is Platinum really the “average skill level”?

I don’t really understand how Platinum is supposed to be the average rank.

What I mean is, I feel like it’s kind of an illusion. Sure, statistically speaking, Platinum might be the average rank now... but does that really mean the average player is actually that good?

It definitely wasn’t like this in OW1. Platinum used to be a relatively high rank.

If you play Quick Play or spend any decent amount of time in actual Gold, Plat, and Diamond lobbies, you’ll probably know what I mean. There are a lot of people who just don’t seem to play at the level you’d expect from their rank, and the skill difference between players in the exact same rank can be massive. You can sometimes see this pretty clearly when someone has a public profile and you look at how many games they’ve played and what ranks they’ve reached.

Here’s another way to put it. Take all these supposedly “average” players, put every single one of them in Bronze, and make them compete against each other from there. How many of them do you honestly think would make it all the way to Platinum?

Do you really think only around 20% of them would end up in Bronze or Silver?

If you want a competitive ladder where ranks actually represent meaningful differences in skill, people should have to climb their way up from the lower ranks. But a lot of competitive games these days seem to hand out ranks almost like participation trophies. A new season starts, there’s a soft reset, and somehow people can even end up at a higher rank than before.

It feels like Blizzard is selling most players this idea that, “No, you’re not a Bronze or Silver player. You’re at least an average Gold or Platinum player, maybe even above average. You’re actually pretty decent at the game.”

And honestly, I don’t think this is even unique to Overwatch. It feels like most competitive games these days have adopted some version of the same system.

Question or Discussion Does Hazard have a hard counter?

What tank shuts down Hazard as completely as Orisa does Rein or Zarya does DVA? Is there a tank I can play that can effectively deal with his sustain and mobility? I mainly play Rein, Winston and Rammatra. I dabble in Hog, Mauga and Domina.

I'm a mid to high plat level tank player (ranked this season kinda sucks) and one tank I'm primarily struggling against is this ugly-ass unkillable porcupine. Especially after he gets his life steal block perk. Any tips would be helpful if Hazard just DOESN'T have a hard counter period.

VOD Review Request Help to Escape Gold with Juno?

So I got back into OW last season and my main goal is to get to diamond One tricking Juno so that I can learn how to really play the game in general and just as a personal goal I made with my brother I feel like I’ve hit my first real wall recently. I’m at a complete loss on what to improve next on Juno in order to get out of Gold 2/1 and get to plat and beyond. I know I need to die less and prioritize my own life and make sure my team is good on heals before I start dealing damage etc. But I genuinely feel like other than a few avoidable deaths and maybe not the best positioning i play really well then still lose. How do you actually get high win rates and actually climb on Juno because I’m seriously confused and feel like I’m at the mercy of my team’s positioning half the time?

My last game on a 4 hour session where I went from plat 5 (my peak) to gold 2 then back to gold 1. There were a few games before this that felt the same and I just don’t know how to rank up.

Replay Code: DHWX8P

Battletag: Hydra

Hero(es): Juno

Map: Route 66

Skill Tier: Gold 1

PC

I already know I could’ve died less and a few of my ults sucked in terms of positioning I think but idk. I honestly just don’t know what a GOOD Juno looks like and need a second/more skilled pair of eyes to give me advice on what exactly I did wrong and what I could’ve done instead and what a diamond Juno what’ve done differently etc lest I become hardstuck lol.
Would really appreciate any help or tips thank you!

Question or Discussion Should I consider playing on pc queues?

I'm masters on console and I'm pretty tired of finding cheaters or soldiers who track like crazy.

Would it be worth it to play on pc queues with a controller or hybrid controls (controller in left hand and mouse in right hand? I don't have both a keyboard and a mouse pad, though it seems to go pretty smooth on my desk. I play on ps4.

I know buying what I'm missing would be better obviously, just want to know if it's doable and if there are less cheaters.

I play Illari. If aiming is too hard I might try heroes less dependant on mechanics or go back to console.

Thank you in advance!

Question or Discussion Why isn’t D.mon as op as she feels like she is?

Im gonna be honest, when I play D.mon she feels absolutely busted in the moment. The jet movement makes squishies feel so reachable and makes disengaging so easy. It genuinely feels like being a predator chasing people down no matter how hard they try to run. Not only that, but a lot of tank interactions feel super easy too - you basically get the option of choosing when to engage and disengage with rein and ram and can poke them from afar when they try to get up close and go in when you have the advantage.

But despite all that, every time I play her even though I feel very overpowered, I also feel like by the end of the game i havent made as big an impact as when I play rein or hog. Like I get some picks but my dps are outkilling me and the other tank got more value.

Is it because im playing her too much like a dps? Does she feel op because she has much better offense and reach, but fall short because she doesnt end up providing as much defense and stability to support my team?

Question or Discussion Gold replay review

I'm doing my placement matches, in 6v6 I got Emerald 5. I'm aware that 6v6 ranks are inflated. A couple of seasons ago I ended up in I think Plat 3 in Tank and Support

But today, after a support queue of about 10 minutes for 5v5 I got into the most one sided match I ever had in competitive in Overwatch. I don't play competitive a lot, so I'm not sure what went wrong.

According to the game, it was a Gold game, but I don't recall ever having a Plat game with a Ball and Sojourn as deadly as the ones that I faced today.

I was the blue Juno, Mizuki and Kiriko

VOD Review Request Decided to move back to Zen, Still lost. Am i Throwing?

R2D1EM

Use: Sadaidjinn

Hero: Zen

Map: Shambali

From my previous post i kinda learned that support need to be more than just healing and do damages against key target too. problem is my aim is genuinely cause for concern / live human testing to whack kiriko kunai just right.

Swapped back to Zen for some games. i noticed that this game has been my least succesful one despite the elim number. We didn't defend well. 2 checkpoint got past us without any resistance and i can't seem to find the right person to be discorded (maybe i didn't check flank enough) so i just discord their sigma and break shield and occasionally damaging enemies.

Is there anything that I can do differently here for the team on account of my patient zero tier aim?

Question or Discussion How to cross the gap between grandmaster and champion?

I’ve been hardstuck in mid GM on DPS for like 10 seasons now and I don't really see myself improving at the game anymore. No matter how hard I try I can’t break into champion. There’s not much else to say. Does anyone have any tips or advice? Is there a disparity between grandmasters and champions that I should practice more?

Question or Discussion In 5v5, how is the tank expected both to constantly peel for the backline and hold space?

I play flex quite a lot, which means I often get put into tank role. I think I’m decent (nothing super special), but I occasionally get a game where I wonder if I’m just misunderstanding the balance of gaining/holding space versus peeling for my squishies.

Last night, there was an example where I was on Ramattra, and I felt I was doing great on the front line: good stats, holding space/objective well, relatively low usage of support resources, and often requiring the attention of 3 to 4 enemies at a time.

However, many times during the fights, a solo enemy Reaper would work his way into the backline and draw focus of the entire team. Everyone but me was focusing the Reaper, and I’m holding front line with much less supporting pressure and heals, but still making it work. Then, the reaper would consistently still manage to take out 3-4 of the squishies despite it being a 1v4 (no ults used).

So I know that part of the duty of tank also means helping peel for your backline, so I would try to help the backline when I felt I could, but then the other four enemies would mow us over because I’m no longer holding the front line. In 5v5, there’s obviously only one tank per team, so we can’t have a tank in the frontline and backline at the same time. I know there’s better tanks for dealing with stuff like that, such as Roadhog and D.Va, but this was Quickplay, and I felt like playing Ramattra and didn’t want to swap (plus, I felt like I was doing well).

We ended up losing the game narrowly, which isn’t what I’m annoyed with, I’m annoyed that the backline was consistently dropping like flies to one character, and every time I turned around to help, the rest of the enemy would smoke us because I was the only thing keeping us from being ran over.

Basically my post is, if you’re in a game like this as a 5v5 tank, is there anything I could have done better, or do I kind of just have to deal with my team losing 4v1s?

Question or Discussion What to do against guaranteed death ults during overtime as a squishy?

We C9’d a match earlier because Junkrat popped riptire and our whole team ran away from robot during overtime. We only needed to push a couple meters further in order to win. I was playing Juno with Orisa as tank, no shields on our team.

How should I have handled this situation? I have <100 hours and sort of panicked. I was definitely one of the ones who ran away (oops) but I was thinking that I could make it back onto point with my hyper ring + glide boost after the explosion.

This has also happened with Mei ults before. I guess I just struggle between balancing “if we leave point we lose” and “if we get caught in this ult and die we lose” and then I don’t know what to do. I can provide replay code if needed. Thanks in advance for your help!

Question or Discussion Any good guides on how to play mercy nowadays?

Returning mercy main here, haven’t played in about a year and feeling like i’m not exactly certain on the optimal play style in the current game. I used to be masters, now i’m low emerald and slowly climbing but really feel i should be climbing a lot faster in lobbies of what seem to be pretty terrible players.

Just wondering if anyone knows a good guide or could give me a quick rundown on the theory on how to use mercy’s kit, positioning, hero matchups, how to support your team etc. Preferably aimed at higher ranked players too.

If anyone could take a look at this as well i’d appreciate it! https://www.reddit.com/r/MercyMains/s/12plW88CWC

Question or Discussion When is it best to use hitscan or dive in game?

Hi everyone.

So for reference for DPS I main at both Venture and Soldier 76. Now I like playing both a lot but it seems like soldier 76 and hitscan in general are more reliable and consistent compared to non hitscan heroes. When I play Venture (who I have the most hours on for DPS) I feel I do my best but other times I feel like I'm not helping at all.

I like playing both and I'm trying to get better at comp in general but I don't know when it's best to use soldier and when it's best to use venture. When is it best to use a hitscan like soldier vs a dive character like venture? Or should I just stick with what I'm best at (venture)?

Thank you everyone. :)

Tips & Tricks Which content creators do you guys watch for genuine gameplay tips/improvement?

I'm mainly looking for someone who's good at giving consise and clear advice, preferably while spectating. Admittedly I'm a bit picky - most of the ones I've found are either obnoxious/more focused on dunking on bad players than actually giving advice you can work with, or they sit in practice range and just talk about what to do instead of demonstrating/showing an example.

So far I've mostly just been watching Flats because he actually gives useful feedback with timestamps even as he's dunking on people. Is there anyone else similar to this that's worth watching?

EDIT: Appreciate everyone's suggestions!

Question or Discussion How hard on average is escaping Plat?

I've been seriously grinding out ranked since the season released last month and I'm stuck in Plat as most of the player base is. I've been playing for six years and have never gone past it. I main tanks like Hog, Winston, and Sigma with a decent understanding of every hero in the role. I've looked up guides, asked around, changed up my mental, and none of it's worked to breach into emerald. I always try my best and play to get better and not to win which I heard was a good thing

So is it just really really difficult to break free of Plat? I'm not happy with being in the "You are mediocre, nothing special at all" rank and I'm open to any suggestions to get out into the much more preferable "Better than average" rank. I'm just starting to feel like it's a little hopeless as I've dropped down from P1 to P3 and can't seem to get back up again

Question or Discussion Is it true that supports shouldn't need or expect peel?

I've seen some discussion around support players lately, and how they should be able to fend for themselves. I am a low ranked support player (placements gave silver 1 but I stopped playing comp after those, qp only for now)

But um, honestly I am unsure how to take that. When I watch gm players on twitch I have noticed many don't really expect help when they are dove, they attempt to handle it themselves and typically either escape or win the duel. On my best hero, Juno, more often than not I can make it out alive or put up a good fight. But on heros I am less skilled at it is much harder and I typically need help.

I mainly would like to know because I really would like to become a better support player. Does it depend on the team comp or the support hero?

VOD Review Request support derank and loss streak

I'm coming back to support as juno after becoming an ashe main for a while. previously bronze and with the rank reset I placed bronze 2. in a 5 hour session I ranked up to silver 3 with juno and some mercy, and then later to silver 2 almost 1, playing in gold lobbies.

This week I completely plummeted and deranked to bronze 1. for every win I had 3 losses. I'm extremely sad and frustrated because I really try my absolute hardest in every round. when I saw bronze again I genuinely started crying out of frustration. I would really appreciate some tips! here are some VOD codes

I've only been playing for 2 seasons and I'm only level 47 juno, pls be kind, I just want help. tysm!

Question or Discussion Has the average player gotten that much better?

So I used to be GM/masters in OW1 and returned to the game. I started out in emerald and have fluctuated up and down. Right now I'm in mid plat which is supposed to be top ~50% of players. That's like the equivalent of being low gold in league of legends. Basically the point where you have people playing on laptops with trackpad while wasted. I just can't wrap my head around how that can be the case when the average player here is so good. It's like they all spent 1000h in aim training. Tracking is near flawless, hitscans are snapping to heads like pro players, genjis are playing like they took a borderline lethal dose of cns stimulants. Obviously there are a lot of smurfs and cheaters too that you don't always spot but wtf is this? If this is top 50% (just average) how crazy are the higher ranks now? Is anyone else feeling this or am I getting too old for overwatch?

Question or Discussion Help with Domina

Having trouble getting wins with her. One of these things usually happens. One, the opposing tank rushes me down past my shield. Two, my teammate die around me leaving me alone. And three, once my shield ends I get killed during the cool down.

I usually bunker down. And try to make sure I'm near cover so I have somewhere to duck behind during my shield cool down. How should I adjust my play style? Should I actually be more aggressive than I'm being? Just looking for some general tips and advice so I have a baseline of where to go.

Thanks 👍

Question or Discussion Nice studio ref headphones but still can't determine directionality of sound well

Upvotes

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 6xx headphones going into a Motu M2 interface (I use these for music production as well as gaming). I feel like I can't tell the direction of sounds as much as I feel I should given that these are objectively pretty good headphones. For people that feel like they can, are you using "gaming" headphones with things like virtual/emulated surround? I guess I wouldn't be too surprised if "music/studio" headphones are worse at something like this. Ive been toggling between Dolby Atmos on/off in OW settings but I don't feel like it makes much of a difference.

Coaching Offer Snoogus back again, offering free coaching!

Hi! My name is Snoogus, unless you see my tax records... and I'm offering free coaching for first sessions!

Last time I did this, I took on 21 students from Bronze all the way up to Diamond. The majority of my students hit their new peaks after just one session, where as returning sessions resulted in several ranks increased. Several students climbed into masters, one recently GM. I am so proud of everyone!

I coach aim, core fundamentals, and am closely familiar with Tank, DPS, Support, and 6v6. I like to prioritize fostering the love of Overwatch and the game itself, because I firmly believe that that is the number one predictor of success.

I myself have peaked GM4 on Dva and Doomfist, but cannot find the time to queue ranked much anymore, hence why I stopped there.

I am offering one free session (1-2 hours long) to anyone who asks, you can comment or message me directly if you want to arrange something!

I'd love to meet you!

Question or Discussion How do you deal with toxicity?

For some context I was bronze during the relaunch to season 1, but after being the weak link in my friend group I dropped ego and decided to get better so I can actually contribute in our games. Recently climbed to plat 1 knocking on emeralds door on support and DPS (yet to do placements for 6v6 and tank but I was plat on both last season ).

For a while I thought what I wanted was to play with friends at their level (they’re gold-plat), but after improving I found myself chasing flow state and delayed gratification from learning and applying things I learned. Now on that journey i learned a lot about myself, I had a rough up brining and I was constantly demeaning myself and my accomplishments. Through learning and pushing myself to improve I found a piece of myself that I never knew existed. I’m genuinely proud of myself and learned I’m a person who never got the opportunity to actually learn what I’m actually capable of and it brings my inner child a lot of joy.

Now, Ever since I entered gold to plat I’ve encountered so much toxicity, and it’s forced me to take breaks, mute chat, not join VC at times because I hear something toxic, someone’s getting flamed for something, I hear horrible words being said, etc. initially It didn’t do anything but as I’ve climbed it’s been more apparent that I’m not enjoying the climb anymore because I’ve not only changed but I’ve grown past the understanding of of what my friends think about the game, and I don’t think ranked is the environment where i thrive. On top of that my ranked games have stopped becoming fun because it feels like an aspect of the game I enjoyed is gone.

I think I should take a break, but I wanted to ask everyone. How do you deal with toxicity? Do I just lack the proper coping skills to filter out the bad aspects of the game?

Question or Discussion How do you deal with one dps thats really good at holding the high ground and you cant kill them?

I don't see this issue that often yet, but when it happens it feels theres pretty much nothing you can do to get past them because no one can really get rid of them and they keep killing you. I'd like to learn how to deal with these types of situations.

I'm a gold dps btw. What I see is that there's only one way to get to them and they are watching that lane constantly. The other way is blocked by the enemy team. If you walk past them you are fighting the enemy with them shooting you in the back. If you walk up to them they kill you fast or their team peels for them. Same thing happens if they are pocketed too. Your team is just dying to this one guy the whole time

Question or Discussion what should i swap dva with in this situation?

VOD Review Request VOD review - Bronze sierra

Hey y’all! Made a new reddit account just for this, so sorry if this isn’t the right place!

I’m a bronze new-ish player (level 200) looking to rank up. I don’t really understand the basics of overwatch, i’ve just been mindlessly playing.

Anyway, I wanna get better at sierra, but i don’t know how to. I often panic like crazy and mess up a LOT lol. My aim is also very shitty… in the 20% or so.

I know sierras kit, i’m just struggling with cooldown management and positioning. I’d like it if someone could fix my mistakes!

Note: you’ll sometimes see me crouching and uncrounching in this match. I’d like to add that it’s all just playful as you can see I sometimes have 1v1s with certain heroes, lol.

Here are my last few matches!

791SD5
X64H9V
NMJC91
PNSPAZ

Please be respectful! I’ve gotten a lot of death threats over this game, and i’m really just looking to improve!

Thanks y’all!
