Discussion Green Hell vr VS Bootstrap Island.

I completed both of these games recently back to back and here are my thoughts:

The main Story of Green Hell Vr took me about 6 hours to complete, while the main story of Bootstrap island took me about 17 hours to complete. So by the hours alone I can say that Bootstrap island is a better game. But the answer is not that simple.

What both of these games get right are the locations. Green Hell Vr completely sells you the idea that you are stuck in Amazon Jungle, while Bootstrap island sells you being stranded on an Island.

So if you are looking for a dense jungle experience with very structured survival mechanics, Bootstrap island won’t cut it for you. Same time if you are looking for beautiful beaches, huge open island with no loading screens and free flow physics based survival mechanics, Green Hell Vr is not for you.

Visually, Bootstrap island is on another level compared to Green Hell Vr. As it is a high end PCVr game, while Green Hell Vr on Psvr2 is a quest port. From my experience, Green Hell Vr offers open areas separated by loading screens. While in Bootstrap Island, the whole island from top to bottom is open to you. It’s really impressive when you stand on top of a mountain or a cliff in Bootstrap island and take in the views knowing that anything you see can be reached on foot. It has that Assassins creed feel to it.

From gameplay perspective, both of these games have very different takes on survival. In Green Hell Vr, everything feels a lot more rigid and on rails. On the other hand, survival in Bootstrap Island feels a lot more free flow and physics based. For example starting fire in Green Hell Vr requires very specific actions and the size or shape of the bonfire is already predetermined. While in Bootstrap island starting fire is completely free form and physics based, so the size and shape of the bonfire is completely up to you.

This idea of structured vs free form survival is not only true when it comes to building fire, it applies to almost everything in both of these games. In Green Vr, it feels like you are fighting against the jungle, while in Bootstrap Island it feels like you are fighting against the elements such as storm, rain and the darkness.

In conclusion, overall Bootstrap island is a better game but Green Vr is no slouch either. I am glad that I played and completed both. They both offer very different takes on survival that complement each other.

I played today Bootstrap Island for the first time. Complete the first chapter and I just can't believe the game is this good and it's 25€. I will had happily payed 40€. I'm not really a fan of survival games but I like the loop of this one when it comes the night. And I think it's pretty easy to survive so that led to enjoy exploring the island and get into the objectives. Also, the game mechanics are very VRAF which comes always with some jank but I like this. As said, it's an amazing work for an indie game. Congratulations to the devs.

My only hesitation is that the world and mechanics may be too dense with things to learn and craft etc that I becomes overwhelming. Is this only a game when you're mentally prepared to commit to something that will take a lot of headspace?

Eh, it’s more like survival unlocks items, so far the only thing to craft (still in Chapter 1) is a fire. I tried it and am now starting my third run haha, so some if us are slow learners.

I forgot this is a roguelike. Is this the kind of game where they expect you to die a lot or some people who are very careful can actually make it through without dying at all?

It’s a roguelite, means when you die you only lose your active inventory and current position on the island. You maintain all story progression and upgrades.

I haven't finished the game, but from my experience, if you are very careful you can survive the whole journey. I will not call it a roguelike.

I couldnt Like Green Hell. This game was the definition of " VR jank mechanics stealing the show from the actual content and goal of the game" type experience for me. Like trying to build things, read things squinting, trying to figure stuff out, store things and place them etc. Plus, i felt it gave no real freedom, a "meh" story, not real openworld...

To me VR is at this point right now that it should be all super intuitive with the less friction as possible, as in real life.
I struggle with a lot of games because of that. But thats just me.
