Question PSVR2 without a PS5
I’ve been using a Quest 3 for about a year and have been very disappointed by it. Just this morning, I discovered the PSVR2 and saw that it’s now able to connect to PCs. Its specs completely fix the issues I had with the Quest and it’s super cheap so I got excited, but I’m wondering if I need a PS5 to do the initial setup for the headset. I don’t have a PS5 and don’t want one, so my question is would it be possible to use the PSVR2 as nothing but a sort of VR monitor for my PC?

You don't need a PS5, but you do need the PC adaptor.
PSVR2 runs with Steam VR on PC, so whatever you can do with Steam VR, you can do with PSVR2.
I don't believe you can project your desktop natively onto the headset however.

You can project it. I just got the adapter last week and it definitely lets you see your desktop. It works really well actually. It's night and day between my oculus rift S and PSVR2 thanks to the resolution and OLED lenses.

When you hit the ps button, it's similar to say the oculus screen. On the bottom you'll see what looks like a PC monitor, you click on I and it shows your desktop.

That's insane. I don't use my PSVR2 for PC but that might make me wanna check it out. And then upgrade my PC so it can handle the game too. Haha

There are some downsides if they are true. I was reading that some games just won't work because of compatibility issues with the psvr2 but I think it's mostly older games. Everything I have tried worked flawlessly. Half-life Alyx, Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, The Serious Sam VR collection all worked great. I will be checking out more soon but it's impressed me with what I experienced. You can also do 120fps. All you gotta do is download the free psvr2 app in steam, run it and set up everything and then start up steamvr. Make sure you have a good Bluetooth connection for the controllers. I just use the wifi 6/Bluetooth antenna that came with my motherboard for a solid bt connection.

The PSVR2 functions as a standalone PC headset, and is fully supported with Sony SteamVR drivers. You only need the PC adapter that is available in an official Sony version or much cheaper generic version off Aliexpress, and probably the Asus BT500 as the majority of in-built bluetooth adapter have problems.
Make sure your PC supports it, which is more important if you have a laptop as you need to check if your USB-C DisplayPort connects to your discreet graphics chipset.

I’ve got a desktop that I built myself, I don’t quite remember the specific components at the moment, but I will say that I never figured out how to get my Bluetooth to work… I tried everything and even contacted ASUS but never got it to connect to anything. This was my first PC build and I know very little about computers. Does Sony’s adapter have Bluetooth built into it and if so, would it not need to run off of my PCs Bluetooth capabilities?

You need to get it to work. Without bt in you pc, and correct version, ps controllers won't work.

Get a Bluetooth usb adapter. Do a little research to find what works with the psvr2 controllers

Ah interesting, I use a WiFi USB adapter because I couldn’t get the WiFi to work either lol. Are Bluetooth USB adapters the same sort of thing?

Yes. The Asus BT-500 just sticks out of one of my front USB-A ports. A short extension cable might be useful if it's at the back if there are problems.

As a PCVR headset it works great, but not as a PC monitor. If your goal is to use it as a monitor, then what you need is a high-end PCVR headset.
PSVR2 is awesome as a PCVR headset for playing VR games, with great OLED display, eye-tracking, and so on… but it doesn’t have the crisp edge-to-edge clarity you’d likely want for use as a PC monitor.
Maybe I misinterpreted your intent, but the words you used suggest a critical distinction.

Ah, yes I think I worded it a bit wrong. When I say use it as a monitor, I just want to be able to plug it in and run a game in VR from my PC. I absolutely hate all of the software and social crap that Meta crammed into the Quest. Maybe some people enjoy all that, but I only use VR to run a single racing sim on Steam and nothing else. Meta doesn’t even maintain that social stuff so, often, that other software will bug and prevent me from using the Quest how I want. Ridiculous.
If the PSVR2 requires me to make a PlayStation social profile and all that or boot my games from within a social dashboard type of thing, like the Quest, it’ll make it much less appealing.

Yes. You don't need a ps5 to set up a PSVR2 on PC. You need the PSVR2 PC adaptor and a bluetooth receiver for the controllers.

After the official update, it has become a steam PCVR headset, yes. You just need the adapter (preferably the official one) and good specs. Some people experience trouble with the Bluetooth connecting to the controllers, but I would say try them first, and if you do have connection issues, try the external Bluetooth solution

If you didn't like Q3 you ain't gonna be happy with Psvr2 either. Vr is still in early ages, meaning expensive and has certain issues. Still, vr is the future.

I have both and they both have their pros and cons for pcvr but I tend to end up using my psvr2 more than my quest 3.
The psvr2 set up can be a bit fiddly to get working properly but once you do it's fine and I find it much more comfortable to wear (with a globular cluster attachment) for extended periods than the quest 3. And nice to have the true blacks of the oled.
But the clarity in the quest 3 is better and no issues with finding the visual sweet spot as it has superior pancake lenses whereas the pcvr2 has older Fresnel lenses

No need to use a PS5 at all, you can use it exclusively with a PC so long as you have the adapter.

The PSVR2 does not detect as a monitor nor as a hud on the PC. Using the PSVR2-PC Adaptor and installing the PSVR2 App on PC are required. This is the App for the setup (area setup, and controller monitoring) but you only need to launch it once and whatever is needed to use the headset runs in the background afterward. You still need the to meet the minimum requirements re USB port and display port to have the Adaptor work but some have been successful un using USB-C to Display Port Adapters.

Using psvr2 with PC is a pain. You need display port and adapter, not all of supports psvr2. Also after you manage to get it to work, you don't get any psvr2 features like headsets haptic feedback and adaptive triggers etc. best to stick with Meta Quest.

I must’ve gotten crazy unlucky with some factory defects or something then. Mine’s been problem after problem since I first booted it up.

I only had screen going all black but that was because I had a protective cover on over my headset which resulted in high temp. Took me just 2 min to figure out Quest 3 was going nuts that time. I simply removed the cover and did a reboot and it fixed it. I haven't been long with the headset though but I had my PSVR2 for about 3 years. I bought both at the exact same price and I found PSVR2 to be highly costly for that time. Quest 3 is damn great deal at any point of time

But it will also intorduce completely new problems. But it's very cheap so why not try it.
