Culture Why the 5th Schedule matters for Uttarakhand — The socio-political reality behind our boom-bap track "5vi Anusuchi"
Over the past few months, grassroots discussions across Uttarakhand have increasingly focused on regional autonomy, land safeguards under Mool Niwas 1950, and constitutional protections under Article 244(1) (The Fifth Schedule).
An independent music video and track titled "5vi Anusuchi" by lyricist Mrityu and producer VG (via the collective Unchalis 39) was recently released to document these exact realities.
Instead of commercial tropes, the record revives 90s boom-bap to address:
- Grassroots Defense: Drawing a direct line from historical environmental resistance to current land rights.
- Systemic Accountability: Confronting state apathy and institutional failure regarding violence against women in the foothills (including cases like Ankita Bhandari).
- Constitutional Demands: Articulating why Article 244(1) and Fifth Schedule protections are vital for the preservation of Himalayan culture, land, and resources.
Hip-hop at its roots is a tool for cultural documentation and holding power accountable.

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts here on how independent regional art can better support the broader dialogue on land safeguards and the Fifth Schedule.

Culture Hil Jatra: Pithoragarh’s Masked Theatrical Ritual
In my recent piece, I write about Pithoragarh’s important cultural ritual, Hil Jatra. The piece explores the history of the ritual and how it is celebrated by the local community, highlighting its role in fostering a sense of collective identity, continuity, and belonging. It also examines how Hil Jatra serves as a living tradition through which beliefs, practices, and cultural memories are passed down from one generation to the next.
I would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, and comments.
