It would cost a lot of money to haul all the rocket parts and fuel on top of a mountain

Plus, you get a better boost by launching near the equator. Height is easy, speed is what you need in a rocket.

This is why the US launches from Florida:

  • Near equator (speed boost from earth's spin)
  • Initially out over ocean (catastrophic failure harms only those aboard)

That's clever. Whoever came up with that must've been some kind of rocket scientist

It's not exactly brain surgery, now is it?

Rocket brain science surgery

I've flubbed "Rocket science" as "rocket surgery" at least 10 times in my life, and reading this comment brought them all back into my brain at once.

Just don't forget, everybody else remembers too

A rocket scientist is the guy who sits at a desk and makes the blueprint, or plans the trajectory and launch dates. A rocket surgeon is the guy who walked up to the thousand tons of highly combustible liquids in a fully fueled SLS to diagnose and repair a faulty valve minutes before launch.

Nah, rocket surgery is having to make repairs while the rocket is "alive" AKA on-mission. Think Apollo 13

Damn, I used to use rocket surgeon as a dis for people doing stupid or needlessly complicated shit. Now I have to come up with a new term because you just rewrote the definition for me.

I do it on purpose, everytime I have occasion to use the phrase. Dad jokes: covering stupidity with grin since the dawn of time

That is to solve “failure harms only those aboard”

this is Rocketship 27, aliens fucked over the carbonator in engine #4, I'm trying to refuckulate it and land on Juniper

Rocket surgery is actually a thing

That's one of the terms that rocket scientists refer to the act of separating parts of the rocket during launch

Got a solid rocket booster you need to abandon when it runs out of fuel? Rocket Surgery

Got a liquid fueled first stage you need to jettison when you get to MECO? Rocket Surgery

One of my favorite skits.

That feeling when you already know what the punchline is and you're just waiting for the delivery.

"Oh Jack, they keep you late at the space center?"
