Professor Steve Walking here, coming to the rescue:

Unlike the uneducated people here who have no idea about physics, the universe and everything, I can explain that semiconductor companies use a “bogus” marketing measuring system to measure the size of transistors.

A 2 nm transistor is often as big as 30nm . But because transistors are no longer just 2 dimensional the performance equivalent of the 30nm chip is that of a 2D 2nm chip, even though nothing in the chip is actually two nanometres.

Every company uses its own metrics for what is equivalent so there is no way to compare, but that doesn’t matter to the guy here, who is relieved, that his PP size is actually really big whomevers company ruler he used.

Its dumb joke because even if Semiconductor ruler is used, 3 cm is still 3 cm, because semiconductors are measured in nanometers if not smaller, the 3 cm would look long or big in comparison.

The joke is that semiconductor companies used to advertise the size of transistors or minimum features in nanometers in the 90s and maybe early 2000s but nowadays the number is almost completely meaningless as each manufacturer measures a different part as TSMC's 7nm chips have similar transistor density to Intel's 10nm chips.

Transistor sizes were still widely talked about/compared through the 2010s. Especially when Intel got stuck on 14nm for waaaay too long

I don't say they aren't, I'm saying 14nm doesn't actually represent the size of the transistors itself. It's a marketing name. The gate length on the 14nm node is actually 24nm

It’s because when they name the processes those processes have little to do with the actual sizes. So for example the “2 nm process” actually has a gate pitch of 45 nm and a metal pitch of 20 nm. With the implication that according to this metric your 3 cm measurement would actually be 30 cm or more.

Semiconductors are presented as a certain number of manometers. 2nm is currently the smallest produced.

To quote wikipedia "Since at least 1997, "process nodes" have been named purely on a marketing basis, and have no relation to the dimensions on the integrated circuit"

I'm pretty sure this is it. It's not just "semiconductor transistors small, 3cm big by comparison". It's that the process nodes are usually larger than the naming convention implies.

My brain went to my favorite ruler. It's made of fr-4 (PCB material). Got it as swag and it looks like a PCB and would totally at home with semiconductors.

The technology used in manufacturing semi conductors are microscopic so may be people using those measurement tools know precisely what an inch is worth in nanometers not only centimeters
