SpongeBob name in French just sounds fucking dumb for some reason. It translates literally to Bob the Sponge

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH, Who lives in an apple of pines beneath the ocean?
Sponge the Bob, pants of square!

The theme in french is dumber than this. It’s « Bob l’éponge carrée! », which translate to « Bob the sponge square! »

I mean, I don”t speak French, and I could tell that France calls the show Bob the Sponge.

Maybe wrong translation?

French name for spongebob. Don’t know what they are bullying him for

u/WishYouWere2D 5h ago
Because they didn't go to French school. They showed up at an English school using the French name.

And? I mean, at least in what I witnessed, we have arabophone and anglophone schools but you’d here kids using Arabic, English, French, Turkish, Russian and even German names for cartoons then manage to figure out which is which through description only to chat on the lore for the whole recess… I don’t get where the grounds for bullying are? Is French stereotyped negatively in the US? (Which I assume to be the most monolingual country where such things would be plausible?)

The English-speaking students thought it sounded stupid. That's all. You're giving school bullies way too much credit.

Well, thank goodness I’ve not been bullied at school (it was pretty rare in the ones I attended, subtle sectarianism was a bigger concern) so I’ve never really understood the dynamics lol. Sorry if I expanded a bit onto a socio-behavioral aspect…

Yes, that is surprising.
Sorry if I expanded a bit onto a socio-behavioral aspect…
*Rambled incoherently about wholly irrelevant things.

Dude It happened to me too with SpongeBob. There was this kid with a lunchbag that had SpongeBob and I was like "Dude, that's SpongeBob! Cool!" His response was "Tf you mean SpongeBob, that's Bob Esponja" (We speak Spanish, btw)

Well, at the very least the actual tweet itself made me laugh pretty good.

Isn't the premise that bikini bottom was the effect of the first nuclear test off of the French coast? May be the French don't like a reminder of it. 🤷

u/ubulerbu 5h ago
Bikini atoll is a us territory, nice try to put that on our back.
