Back then people didn't want the universe to end
Now that the world is becoming a shitshow people think that's probably for the best at this point

"In the beginning the Universe was created. This had made many people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move"

My favourite quote from the book
7
u/lettsten 1h ago
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
There is another theory that states that this has already happened.

Stop trying to convince me to reread the whole series. It's now too long for my social media-rotten brain.

Why did my brain default to reading this in a trump voice?
2
u/Budget_Meaning1410 1h ago
I hope because you’ve never had the privilege of hearing it read in a Peter Jones or a Douglas Adams voice.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon.
Certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this bullshit three-ring circus sideshow of freaks.

I would argue it didn't get as bad until 2020

The only people that say that didn’t live through 1999-2004

I did, and was in my late teens at the time. I definitely agree with u/CreamDoll32.

Blind nostalgia. Rose colored glasses make everything seem better. I’d rather have what we have now than worry about another terrorist attack to the degree of 9/11, anthrax in the mail and George W. Bush as the president.
It was fun. It was pre-smart tech and during the early Internet and things were slower and people weren’t as sensitive but things weren’t better or worse overall.

More like it removed the illusion and without the illusion our systems no longer make sense. Time for new systems but the old ones have to die and that’s gonna be a bad time.

Too much free-time for everyone and they came up with some of the most fucked up things ever
1
u/Adventurous_Memory18 1h ago
Started before that, 2016, in the western world anyway, Brexit, the orange turd, Bowie
1
u/puffindatza 51m ago
Its been a shit show way before that, the internet makes it impossible to ignore

u/s_p_1_d_e_r 3h ago
It has been a shit show for the last 20k years, commun 70 million people died last century because a failed painter wanted to conquer the fucking world
1
u/Yesodisnotop 3h ago
A nationalist surge in germany was inevitable, Hitler probably increased the death count but ww2 was doomed to happen.

Don't know where it goes against what i said? The world was fucked up back then and is ficked up now
2
u/DrMux 4h ago
People have been assigning arbitrary dates that the world went to shit for decades now. My favorite was the idea that the world actually did end in 2012, and everything after is some kind of moment-of-death fever dream type thing. Then that story got revived in 2016 and again in 2020.

u/tnh34 3h ago
People in the west still enjoying a life where many diseases can be cured, food is abundant, world is still 99% peaceful, you can learn anything at your fingertip, endless entertainment & porn, and human rights is a thing
"This fucking sucks lets end it."
First world problem in a nutshell. Some people don't deserve the privilege they have.

What you describe should be the lowest bar for everyone all around the world, the bare minimum.

I'm all in for sacrificing Sam Altman to the gods, it might fix things up. If it doesn't, at least noone will miss him.

I don’t understand why a meteor is needed. If someone doesn’t like the world the way it is, they have options. Let the rest of us who are still enjoying ourselves be.

She thinks one bad, the other good
What can it be?
Could it be that she liked the world in 2019 and didn't want it erased by an asteroid and now in 2026 she's like "fuck it" ?
I wonder.....

Zeebrox - "Call just came down, the Human Experiment is done, gone too far off the rails. No one believe it's real anymore."
Glabbint - "We're cancelled? Oh, thank god! I'm going to need years of therapy after seeing this shit. I'll go spin up the mass driver, go find an asteroid. A BIG one."

So many of the most popular movies and series are based in some root of apocalypse or societal collapse-why might this be? It’s almost like the vast majority of people resonate with the idea that a big reset would equalize opportunity and allow average people to have a chance at something better. You know the powers that be have fucked up completely when the end of the world looks not only appealing, but possibly our only true hope.

I’m pretty sure this is refering to this:
In 2019 astronomers were predicting that we had ten years before a potentially world ending asteroid would hit the planet. Even bill nye was in on planning diversion. People were genuinely tweaking. Turns out it’s gonna miss us very narrowly
