I was there recently and was surprised how tolerant of gay they are compared to other Muslim countries I’ve been to. But yeah it’s still technically illegal.

Again, the same is true in the U.S. Aside from the state religious officials (since we don’t have those here), every one of those examples has happened to a trans person I personally know.
Regardless, the topic of this thread is being gay in Malaysia, not trans. You’d probably have a better shot disputing me with anecdotes of gay oppression. That’s something the U.S. has managed to reduce in the last couple decades.

My whole point was that relative to other Muslim countries, Malaysia isn’t that bad. I wasn’t even trying to say they tolerant, just that they’re not as intolerant. Someone else cited an instance of intolerance, the implication being they disagree, so I pointed out that it doesn’t refute my claim, as the same could be said about a country known for being tolerant of lgbt.

Understandable. They don't really arrest you in Malaysia though you can safely announce you are gay in Malaysia. The problem is that there are no way for gay people to legally marry so they have a lot of issues like inheritance when dead.
Nope, there are cases where malaysian authorities arrest people for being gay though most time they're just got released afterward. It's a weird system because simply being gay is legal under federal law but is illegal under many states law.

Malaysians take the law fairly loosely. Paying bribes to get off a speeding ticket is normal. Lots of buildings are in disrepair because the tenants refuse to pay rent and governing bodies do not chase it. Politicians blatantly hoarding and abusing funds is no secret. Snatch and grab motorcyclists have lately realised that its' faster to carry a parang (machete) and slash the person to grab their purse rather than demand their belongings at knifepoint.
Even without going to extremes, the common Malaysian take loosely goverened laws (like parking) seriously. Like they say in Pirates of the Carribean, 'it's more of a guideline'.
Yeah but the issue with a "not legal" marriage isn't "you will be arrested an jailed" (though you might be, IDK).
The issue is the marriage isn't legally recognised - you're not classed as the spouse of your partner. Partner in hospital and can't make medical decisions for themselves? Partner's parents make the decisions for them, you might be barred from the hospital room.
Inheritance, life insurance, spousal support? You're not eligible, as you're not married.
There may be other legal methods to get the same or similar rights, I'm not versed on the situation in Malaysia, but those are some of the benefits of legalised same sex marriage.
Malaysia is a bit of a weird one, because it's a Muslim country and Malaysian Muslims within Malaysia are pretty severely religiously repressed. But non-muslims in Malaysia basically get to do whatever. Would be weirdly progressive if apostasy wasn't severely punished.
Malaysia is still incredibly underdeveloped. Some lady cussed my wife and I out for holding hands while walking in a park in KL which we laughed off but outside of the capital things are much, much worse.
Malaysia's legal and political framework operates with secular elements, making it a muslim-majority instead even though it's true the Islam is the official religion. Syariah laws don't apply to non-Muslims
Funnily enough, a solid portion of America didn't need the Muslim majority to hit that "Sodomy is illegal in all forms" button and hold it down right up until 2003 with the SCOTUS' ruling on Lawrence v. Texas.
But, yeah, having a Muslim majority certainly isn't going to make that any easier to clear up.

It doesn’t really work in text, but that’s the kind of joke it’s supposed to be.
It's a TV/Movie trope. Whenever there is something controversial or the film is self-censoring (for comedic effect) there will be a loud noise blocking out the dialogue. Traditionally it's a train.
I think it's a reference to the trope in American cartoons where a character tells another character the writers never actually wrote, and it's unfortunately obscured by a loud vehicle passing by.

There was a powerpuff girls episode where i think they learn to swear but it was always covered by car or background noises. I was so young i had absolutely no idea what was going on or how censorship worked. I just thought they learned to mimic car sounds and everyone in the show was freaking out for some reason
I think you might be missing the sarcasm, the humour behind "Malaysia mentioned" (or in general [country] mentioned) comes from it often being used under a post where the country is painted negatively, so only picking up on the country mention is humorous
Muslim-majority country. That being said, if you go to the nightlife in Kuala Lumpur, you can find drag shows, transgenders, etc. Some food chains also employ transgenders. You can find a group of female friends with hijabs on, with one token gay friend in that group. Some private companies also employ LGBT people here.
it is just not legal, can’t have same-sex marriage and all that, but as long as the people in the LGBT community are not trying to show off publicly, not many people bats an eye. Malaysia is not culturally PDA people too so you will struggle to find people kissing in public, let alone gay people.

Singaporean so I don’t have any more recent examples, but there was a raid on a gay bath house in Malaysia late last year. Even though no one ended up being prosecuted, a lot of men were forced out of the closet with their identities being made public. Lesbians and gay men still exist under threat.

In this trope, a character will announce that they are about to reveal a significant bit of information, usually a hole in the world building or someone's backstory that fans would love to know, but otherwise is irrelevant to the actual plot.
As the character is about to give this information, something loud and obstructive takes up the screen, censoring the character and their voice.
There is then usually a followup where another character who was able to hear the information says something along the lines of "oh wow, well now I know" implying that the question has been answered and therefore does not need to be brought up again.
