You want all of them to be installed so you wont have any problems in the future with any software that require them, and i still dont understand why they are not build into windows 11 already, but everything else are.

True if we can keep legacy drivers for floppy drives or modems or even mini-disk players. We could probably do the same or similar thing with legacy frameworks and distributables
Edit: also keeping legacy stuff alive is pretty important

And then you'd have people crying about "useless bloatware".

I don't believe Microsoft is bloating with legacy drivers or frameworks for supporting older apps
Google and Microsoft want you to stop using your old devices and buy new devices that is locked down in the name of privacy and security

I don't believe Microsoft is bloating with legacy drivers or frameworks for supporting older apps
and yet, they do, out of all existing OS, windows still has the best backwards compatibility

those microsoft visuals are more important than "microsoft to do" or "people"

Thinking of deleting everything of that once, clear all games and kept fresh. Need to note which C++ is installing, and be aware.

I always thought these things were backwards compatible. Guess not

I really wish Microsoft finds a way to clean this up. Just gets annoyingly cluttered real quick.
Like half the time I see them like this I'm half tempted to uninstall them, but I know better ofc

The Visual C++ Redistributable team got a new manager in 2013 and they were an agile asshole.

You can safely delete the older versions of ones where you have a duplicate year and architecture

This is by far the thing that turns me off from ever switching back to Windows, you have to spend so much disk space and time hunting down all these runtime bullshits every time you want to run anything

Ah, shit, this post is an eye opener for me. Just a week ago I've asked myself the same question and thought "Well, surely they're backwards compatible, right?" and just deleted everything except v14 x64 and v14 x86. I wonder how nothing is broken yet lmao
Edit: also deleted desktop runtimes except the latest one

you know faugus launcher which is on linux. installs all of that to run windows games anyway right?
they don't magically ignore visual c++ and get windows games at once

u/Andrikos21 13h ago
Why would i use linux if i want things to just work?

u/JoyconDrift_69 12h ago
Many use the "I want things to just work" argument as a reason to switch tbf

Each piece of software is built using a specific version of Visual Studio (2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, etc.) and architecture (x86, x64) and requires its exact matching run-time library to function. What a cluster-fuck.
