Internet Culture David Harbour says America’s family culture has a capitalist mindset of protecting your own and ignoring everyone else: “It’s like, ‘F**k the rest of the world,’ or like, ‘We protect what’s ours’... there’s something about communal living in America that we all kind of long for.”

In asian culture many families live with their grandparents who help with chores and childcare while the parents work

9

u/Feral_Witchchild 5h ago

Same with Latin America.

5

u/The-King-Tomato 4h ago

Same with Italy and a lot of the world. America is a sick nation.

I mean the president is a rapist with known ties to child sex traffickers.

The culture and views of Americans are warped

Is it weird in those cultures to have sex with your parents in the house?

Buying a house and mortgage just so I can have sex

I was born in Europe and lived my whole life with that collectivist mindset. I have neighbors that live walking distances to their grown children and I know more about what’s going on with them than the parents. To me that’s totally insane.

u/LettingHimLead 3h ago

I’m in the US, and we live on a family compound. It’s amazing to live this way.

2

u/StreetCollar2708 3h ago

I live two doors down from my sister. Neither of us have kids, but we have pets and we will alway sbe like..."Hey going out for the weekend, don't let my dogs/cats die, thanks". And it's such a relief not to have to worry about finding a pet or house sitter if doing something.

1

u/Sir-Uther 4h ago

It’s every culture outside of North America and maybe Western Europe?

1

u/KeenObserver_OT 2h ago

Have you ever hung around those families? My wife is Chinese and the amount of interference and second guessing is off the charts. Live near family not with family.

I don’t think we were, no.

4

u/Prudent_Research_251 5h ago

Divided we fail, we chose dominion instead of stewardship and we rewarded and promoted the worst of us into positions of power, and then allowed them to entrench the status quo

The solution is in the village

2

u/Capable_Opportunity7 5h ago

No, this arrangement is fairly new for humans, we lived in multi generational homes. But if you do that you only need one washing machine, stove real estate for many people, we can't have that. Also you probably wouldn't need as much childcare because with younger adults working people could actually retire before 75. All bad things apparently

2

u/CancelThis2077 5h ago

Yeah it's made me re-evaluate what it means to be an American. My parents immigrated from Taiwan to the US for better opportunities, but since then they've moved back to Taiwan, and I'm here trying to make it work. Like is it even worth it anymore?

2

u/No-Passenger-1511 5h ago

Americans view staying with parents long term, not moving out at 18, as loser mentality. If people had parents worth a shit they would have more support.

2

u/Regular_Point8796 4h ago

These are all fairly brand new concepts to the last couple generations. We're basically in a giant social experiment, for good and ill.

Pressured her into an open relationship.

Spoiler alert: twasnt her idea of a good time

Im gonna side eye this man talking about communal living

13

u/Atoge62 7h ago

One could make the argument that because we’ve been pressured to live this capitalist first lifestyle, it has decoupled our psyches to the point that we’re no longer even looking at our relationships in healthy ways. We’re overly stressed, overly marketed towards newer/brighter/younger/hotter individuals when we are in relationships, by capitalism, constantly to feel inadequate and to buy more shit to fill the void of an unfulfilling existence. Once you turn your back to natures intentions, ie reciprocal communal living, and promote capitalisms goals as priority, well that’s how you end up with a society full of cheaters who hate themselves for it later….

9

u/BiophileB 6h ago

Amen. I highly recommend anyone curious about another way of life to read Ismael by Daniel Quinn, the first of a trilogy of books that outline how we lost our way and how we might revert course. There’s no singular solution for building a more sustainable, equitable way of life, but those books really helped me question my understanding of what Western society is currently, understand that I don’t have to accept it and helped me to envision what it could become.

2

u/Atoge62 6h ago

Nice I appreciate the rec! I’m a huge reader, I’ll check out the trilogy!

1

u/Electrical_Coast_561 5h ago

If you constantly feel inadequate and need to fill a void maybe look inward and dont be so quick to blame society or capitalism. Thats actually a personal problem that isnt going to be fixed so simply. Capitalism doesn't make people cheat bro

3

u/Atoge62 4h ago

I’m guessing you haven’t done a deeper dive into the psychology and spirituality shifts that occur when you decide to separate humanity from nature, profit from people, and unleash that might for centuries on folks who never asked for it. Certainly individuals will respond differently to such entrenched trauma and violence, and their access to capital (resources) will also be a factor, but you saying your schtick here online doesn’t really amount to much.

Until you’ve spent time reading and learning from people who’ve devoted their whole lives to understanding this break from natural living, you’re simply regurgitating talking points proclaimed by the status quo. And if you do decide to read about these topics, read from people before the 1970’s to get yourself distanced from the hyper-monetized social creep that begins to occur around then.

Sorry honey u see it's actually society's fault I cheated, yeah I'm just so disconnected from nature's intentions

3

u/Atoge62 2h ago

I think you’re missing the point of our conversation, we’re looking at the systems in place that encourage cheating, idolizing younger more attractive partners and simultaneously makes people less satisfied with their own lives, weakening people’s psyches and emotional capacities.

Unless you think humans have been able to adapt well to modern society and capitalism? I’d love to hear some examples?? Otherwise it’s just cheap jabbering…

Lily Allen was a freak who painted her husband's dick up in Jim Crow style blackface, admitted herself to being a serial cheater, slept with her best friend's love interest for reasons even she could not properly explain, and she went crazy when she found out her ex husband was in a new relationship

All of this to say she's a whacko narcissist and I don't sympathize with her at all, and it certainly doesn't invalidate everything a person says.

6

u/MillionaireWaltz- 6h ago

Not defending his actions, I just don't have much sympathy for Lily Allen who is an admitted serial cheater, herself.

4

u/Adorable-Voice-3382 5h ago

Not being a good person doesn't preclude someone from noticing real issues. Especially ones that are so pervasive and widespread like big cultural problems.

Frankly it's just refreshing to see anyone visibly talking about this.

3

u/NewChemistry5210 3h ago

So? Some of you are acting like "cheating" is a sin punished by death and should instantly turn everything he says to nonsense lol

His point is still 100% correct, despite him cheating

2

u/forever_downstream 3h ago

Seriously, especially when it's Lily Allen who as others pointed out has her own salacious cheating life....and the fact is we just have zero idea what really went on in their relationship.

2

u/cheesemangee 4h ago

What does cheating have anything to do with anything he is saying?

1

We have a severe fetishized view on our individuality and revile the idea of collectivism even in the slightest when that includes simple community building at this rate. That's why its a feel good story on the news when people just do basic shit like come together and help a family whos house burns down.

9

u/IHeartBadCode 6h ago

It's the bastard form of "rugged individualism". We've been building it up for some time now. This notion that everyone can by themselves basically live on their own. It's the opposite of collectivism, which became vile because it was seen as opposing freedom, capitalism, and other made up American "unique" values.

Our nation has E pluribus unum, until it was replaced with the whole "In God We Trust" bullshit in the 1950s. That motto means from many into one, it enshrines the collectivism that's required to build a strong nation. We're the United States not the Loosely Associated With Each Other States.

And the reason this whole "go it alone" bullshit has been pushed so hard is because it makes all of us easier targets to pick off one by one by the assholes who run this place.

We were built on the idea of working together as a collective. And this nation has taken the notion of the individualism and personal freedom, and converted into weapons to make that collective action weaker and easier to manipulate.

1

u/Odd_Entry2770 6h ago

Yea have you met people?

1

u/TrustworthyKahmunrah 2h ago

Communities used to be a lot stronger and more cohesive in the US. But sometime in the 60s, a decline began. Trust in one's neighbors, desire to volunteer, and perform community service dropped.

That's why its a feel good story on the news when people just do basic shit like come together and help a family whos house burns down.

The odd thing about this is America's history does not prove this correct. In fact, the go against community for the sake of self is a late 20th century change (probably sometime late 70's, early 80's). I know aspects that include segregation are involved, but most communities were actually very well a "village" to paraphrase Hillary Clinton raising everyone else's family. Folks generally cared, even CEO's looking out for their own workers with pensions and value.

At some point, probably with the election of Reagan, folks simply started to look out for themselves and went far more selfish. Of course it isn't everyone, and without sounding like a follower, but the boomer generation really went all in on themselves. And, yes, the drop-off of religion and fellowship contributed since greed became all encompassing. Add social media and the introverted behaviors it encourages and now, as you said, it has become the feel good stories instead of the norm when folks help each other. It happens more often really but, yes, we are more divided today. I'm not so sure capitalism is what changed the mindset or even what made it happen, as greed is a cancer to every society, but it is happening here.

Americans are definitely family centered to a fault. So much more energy should be put into community, the family centric insularism is isolating

David Harbour is a good example of when people blur the line between “this is our business” and “this isn’t our business”. Once the line is blurred, they’ll treat everything as “this is our business” even when it’s not, and will react with the same fervor to truly heinous things as they do to more minor things.

Cheating and divorce. Not our business.

Interpersonal work problems with Millie Bobbie Brown. Not our business.

But people react as though it is because the line got blurred somewhere along the way.

The right says: life is hard, so look after your own (and fuck everyone else).

The left says: life is hard, so we have to look after each other.

Obviously, there's other stuff. The right says, "People who have wealth are supreme, so just allow them to keep and generate more and more wealth." The left says that "we live in a world of scarce resources and that it is unfair for a few people to hog them, so we should all share."

Right: Fight tooth and nail and fuck everyone over.
Left: Let's all be kind and share and live together.

The way we teach kids in kindergarten is to be nice, be cooperative, share, be in it all together. As you get older, one section of society says that that's woke bullshit and that you should just step on people to get what you want.

1

3

u/vagamund00 7h ago

Doubt it's that simple. Different cultures have different norms and habits as to how often and how large and how open their gatherings are.

4

u/basquetbolJones 7h ago

Yes. Different cultures have different norms. Totally agree.

1

u/TrustworthyKahmunrah 2h ago

It is that simple. The greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote, the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and community service. Neighbors trust one another less. Virtually all measures of civic health are lower in more diverse settings.

1

u/KathyCredit 6h ago

So, tribalism

1

u/kayl_breinhar 5h ago

It was put best in the movie Killing Them Softly.

“I’m living in America, and in America, you’re on your own. America’s not a country. It’s just a business. Now fucking pay me.”

1

u/Haunting-Raccoon-132 5h ago

I bet he longs for communal living and having sex together lol. But he's absolutely right about this. Its how the country was started and cultivated individualism.

It's this idea with history and data.

1

u/Deathanddisco041 5h ago

We’re naturally tribal creatures and need socialization. Plus we’re all kind of stuck here together, maybe we should work together?? It doesn’t seem like a tough concept.

1

u/Sea_Daikon7132 5h ago

When it comes down to it, you have to be the change you wanna see.

He speaks a lot of truth, but it isn’t the full picture. I’m a family man and we share our lives with many people in our community. Many families do.

1

u/Emotional_News108 5h ago

Community. It makes such a huge difference. I have grade school aged kids and they started a week ago Monday. Their younger brother started preschool Tuesday, I work remotely, and their mom was out of town. So my mother-in-law took the preschooler all day Monday and when I went to pick him up, my neighbor happily let my older kids stay at his house. That’s the thing many Americans feel like they’re missing or sometimes reject entirely but we need it. We’re built for it.

1

u/sogwatchman 5h ago

Not sure he can talk about family structures or protecting anyone when his ex-wife says he cheated on her for more than 3 years.

1

u/BodhingJay 5h ago

Indeed.. it takes a village. We evolved from millions of years of tribal community it is impossible to be healthy without it. The nuclear family unit is not enough. It never and never will be.. we are making ourselves and each other sick living this way

1

u/CraftyInfluence9983 4h ago

The ones you put in power had you fighting pointless wars, turning you against this and that type of neighbor for so long that you can't trust anyone anymore

1

u/lep63again 4h ago

I’d argue that our increasingly mobile culture caused this. People used to grow up and old in the same neighborhoods and so had a sense of community- which is required for any kind of communal mindset. If you have no connection with your neighbors you’re not going to develop that.

1

u/redtiger288 4h ago

This is so easy to say when you don't have awful horrible parents, or better yet, non-existent parents. Lucky me, I got both.

1

u/Difficult-Mobile902 4h ago

Communal living sort of depends on a large chunk of your society not destroying what’s good for everyone else. That’s how you get what he’s talking about. I don’t expect a rich Hollywood actor to understand what it’s like having something essential stolen from you that takes 6 months of work to replace. There’s a reason we have to protect what’s ours because if we don’t others will take everything from us.

1

u/Upbeat_Respond9250 3h ago

Family members look out for each other first. Of course that’s deemed racist until you realize that’s how the world operates.

1

u/Equivalent_Reach_572 3h ago

Yes we do, we long for community, but capitalists segregated us all to force us to buy every item for ourselves and never share a thing so that they could make a shit ton of money. THey put us in cages we have to supply fully ourselves so they can make more money. People livign together means less money for them. People sharing means less money for them. People living in community groups means less wealth and power for them.

Fight the capitalist human farm.

1

u/V_Cobra21 5m ago

What definition of capitalism are you using, and how does that definition establish your conclusion that capitalists deliberately segregated people to force them to consume more?

1

u/Positive-Ad-406 3h ago

u/tanksplease 3h ago

Bless your heart David but I do not agree. I dislike other people and don't want then near me. I also want them to be happy and healthy with ample opportunity to thrive and grow at least 30 feet away from me at minimum.

1

u/Corporate-Scum 3h ago

Corporations killed regionalism and community died with it. Sense of place and pride of place require actually being from somewhere. We don’t have that as much. We have more transient culture. Our stores and media aren’t local. Everything has been centralized for the oligarchs, even our government. Harbour is so close to putting his finger on it, but is unsure of the culprit. Capitalism is a major contributing factor to tyranny.

1

u/Upbeat_Respond9250 3h ago

He’s building a huge strawman. Saying that you are either all alone as a single person or in a community as a family. Go out and make friends and build your community, no one is stopping you from that.

1

u/Shot_Transition_3589 3h ago

u/pitterlpatter 3h ago

Wealthy people love to talk like this until it’s time for them to share what’s theirs. lol

1

u/iceicig 3h ago

End of Oak Street had some good commentary on that.

The movie opened with a block party where everyone was having fun, families and kids everywhere together. The main mom and dad were hiding marital strife throughout this event.

It later devolves to everyone for themselves, care for your immediate circle and fuck the rest, everyone else is out to get theirs so why shouldn't we do the same

1

u/earthlingHuman 3h ago

The idea that democratically running certain aspects of society makes anyone less free is the greatest successful piece of propaganda ever employed by the ruling capitalist class.

Those capitalists are the only ones who are less free under a system that takes care of people. They are less free to exploit all of us for our labor value. The fruits of our labor feed their vast wealth and power while effectively reducing our own. Trillions in labor value has been siphoned up to the wealthiest among us in the USA since the meager labor protections of the New Deal were declawed.

Yet these same people use their media corporations to manipulate you into fearing democracy and worker power over capitalist oligarch power...

I dont long for a commune... why dont we start with your mansion bubby? I see a lot of junkies in LA let em inside live communal!! Lead by example ?

u/mack_the_elder 3h ago

Most Americans dont actually get to travel, once you spend a lot of time in Europe and Asia, you see how the cities and towns are designed for community.

All the squares and plazas, in public spaces and within the apartment buildings. Every night people congregate and connect with their neighbors. Obviously not everyone, but this was such a better lifestyle than when i come home and most of my neighbors haven't said more than a few words and we've never sat down to chit chat.

It is a crazy different pace of life that America as a majority is completely ignorant of, and so easy to just listen to random jabronis talking shit online and on paid "news" channels

u/OkAssociation3487 3h ago

The nuclear family is a specific and relatively modern invention, but basically every society in history has prized family or clan ties above anything else

1

u/NewChemistry5210 3h ago

I'd argue that the main reason for what he describes is the proliferation of "individualism" in Western society.

Being similar to others or part of a whole is not right, because your individuality will be suppressed. All part of the illusion of the "American Dream" and how that mindset has also traveled to Europe more and more over time.

u/Ant10102 3h ago

Easy for someone famous to say when everyone else is pay check to pay check. Theres plenty of community out there if you go look for it. But when people work, eat, sleep, just to get by, ya no shit im not looking out for anyone but my family. Out of touch rich people should keep their opinions to themselves about most topics

u/Led_Zeppelin_IV 3h ago

Lots of comments blaming republican voters when they are the ones who donate, volunteer, and adopt kids at much higher rates than left wing voters. Liberals are just performative.

u/imnotamelondude 3h ago

The ruling class will live in houses, eat steak, and fly on planes. The working class will travel by train, eat bugs, and own nothing. Ask yourself do feel lucky and be the one eating steak.

HOAs show why modern communes wouldn't work, with covenants that are designed to foment a sense of community, but really don't. Because people these days are too used to living in an individualistic way, and are much too self serving to even begin to live communistically.

Where I disagree is that I don't long for communal living at all; I would hate to do it among the current crop of American neighbors.

For I am the one who watches the neighbors' cats, while not one of my neighbors ever volunteered to watch mine in turn. I'm the one bringing broth and baked goods to people when they are sick, or lending tools, or moving furniture, or giving neighbors rides when they need them, or watching out for their kids when they're outside.

Sometimes I am the only one out there volunteering with community work that needs doing. After my mom died, or I was down with pneumonia and had chronic fatigue for a month, and after my husband lost his job, and now has chronic pain, and I lost mine - nothing. When I had to have a biopsy done with general anesthesia, and my husband doesn't drive, I had to arrange a driver. Zero help; zero offers.

I've become unreachable, I've set boundaries, I keep to myself, because I have to save my own life and provide for my family, and now the neighbors are open in their hostility because I am no longer there to serve them.

This is how a lot of people are now. We live in an atomized society.

Lmao this dude knows nothing about family or values whoever listens to him is an idiot

1

u/dealingwithhookers 2h ago

that's everybody's mindset... that's literally how Dutch and German are, actually they are even worse than Americans. i challenge anyone to prove otherwise

the swedish will watch you die outside in the snow because you're not allowed in their lobby, and that will be a normal thing for them. can't say the same about americans, americans would help

Listen to the Lily Allen album! This man is is LIAR and a CHEATER and literally had an entire apartment as a dedicated sex dungeon that she (his wife of ten years) did not know anything about!!! I don’t wanna hear jack shit about his family values

1

u/Classic-Honey1316 25m ago

His wife of 10 years? They were literally married for 4 years. And do you even know anything about Allen? Go find out first, then give your opinion. Stop repeating like a parrot.

Wasn't this the guy threatening people outside of a gas station a couple months back? Not saying he's wrong but literally who cares what he says about anything?

Rich people love being opinionated.

Go be poor, dude.

1

It's funny how the wealthy want a smaller population size.

1

u/Open_Environment_801 2h ago

Didn't he make $12 000 000 for the last season of Stranger Things and now he's on track to start getting Marvel money, seems to benefit from capitalism while hating it.

1

u/possibly_lost45 2h ago

No. No we don't. And anyone on The Daily Grind who says otherwise is a liar

1

u/AlaskaCosmoline 1h ago

Keeping your home safe has nothing to do with "capitalism." People were building hill forts epochs before the first corporation was created.

1

u/GoblinWrangl3r 1h ago

Hes right tho. Ppl who start famlies think this deep down.

1

u/seattlereign001 1h ago

Lily Allen would say he is all about being ‘communal’.

1

u/Muted_Buy8386 1h ago

As someone with a family and a castle, I get it. It is fuck the rest of you. And I'm okay with that. Sucks for those without good families or good castles. But nowhere in nature does every member of a given species get a fair shake.

Yo fuck this liberal communist piece of fucking shit. Unfortunately he is the complete opposite of hopper.

1

u/AnimeChica3306 1h ago

I think part od the issue/reason is we are a car country with poor transit. Apart from big cities you dont have a lot of towns where everyone can just walk into town. You have to drive most places. Even some big cities have poor transit look at LA. The country is built to isolate people from community places.

American individualism and exceptionalism will be the ruin of our country.

1

What a dork. Says a bunch of words without really saying anything to.

1

u/jayhole2000 1h ago

Sitting up high looking down saying these things is a little hypocritical

1

u/mseg09 1h ago

And then eventually it becomes "fuck the rest of the country" and then "fuck the rest of the state" and then just "fuck anyone who isn't me"

1

u/jeon2595 1h ago

Meanwhile, the United States is number 1 in charitable giving, by a lot.

1

u/InterviewDizzy1649 1h ago

Fuck this guy bro 😂

1

u/Tough_Shake9821 1h ago

Communal living only works when everyone agrees on basic principles or has a government who will force it upon the population for generations until it becomes common place. Most people in the comment section hates 47-48% of the country in rabid fashion, so “communal” living will never happen here.

1

u/lostlogin2 1h ago

yeah i bet he would want to live in a communal setting....

1

u/RolandTEC 1h ago

Lol, NOTHING TO DO WITH CAPITALISM. America 50 years ago was capitalism and didn't have the issues with each other as we do today. What a retard

1

u/TowelFine6933 1h ago

That's great Dave.... How much are you sitting on after Stranger Things & the MCU?

1

u/Vegetable-Error-2068 1h ago

There is no communal living in America.

America is the most individualistic society in the world. America is the world champion of ladder-pulling.

There is no altruism in America. There is no sense of "greater good." It's Machiavelli's paradise.

u/4tunate-1 1h ago

Hot air. “I’m just like you”…Blah Blah

1

So help out David…love this guy but practice what you preach or shut up

1

u/AppliedCarbon 1h ago

I'm sorry, is he complaining that people care about thier own family more then people from other countries? Is this for real?

1

u/MossyEngineering-447 58m ago

Most men who talk this way just want to have sex with lots of women and have the other women be okay with it

1

u/benhur217 56m ago

What an asshole.

1

u/wadleyst 38m ago

I think he might have been reaching for the term "community" but came up with that instead. Community is what you lot yearn for, but cannot have, because of the mindset he outlines.

1

u/harrycarey15 31m ago

He tells the plebs this from his mansion😆

1

u/judgelearnedthumbs26 13m ago

Fuck this asshole.

1

u/MeanCryptographer585 12m ago

The money government takes is straight out of the mouths and support of my children for some shithead bum I neither know nor care about. That is why I am against it. It directly negatively impacts the people I most care about.

1

u/willflameboy 11m ago

I think Americans just remember a time when basic humanity and decency were the standard, rather than endless pursuit of money and ratfuck-or-be-ratfucked. We all know it's unsustainable; we know it's killing us, and very few of us are even happy.

1

u/Ok-Traffic-5996 9m ago

I get that there certainly is a selfishness within the culture of America. Like we're the best country and we're all in a weird competition with each other but..... Of course we want the best for our families. Wtf. Of course we look out for our kids over others.

1

u/redditaccountnumb1 9m ago

He's incorrect because families don't even protect their own.
