Photo/Video Seen in SE
This headstone is in the parking strip in front of houses in the Sunnyside neighborhood. When we looked at old platte maps we saw that this was the site of an orchard and the platte was in Cherrydale. Back in the day you could bury your family on your farmland. Were thinking that’s what this is. Would be interested if anyone knows more about this.

There is also a book that lists all Oregon burials. My son has a copy. I think this might be in it. I’ll ask him

Awww. I think so too. He spent many days in Lone Fir with me when he was small. He visits it about once a week and takes photos. The two of us love cemeteries and Portland history.

Very interesting! I found a headstone near my house when I was a kid in the 70s. Went to show my kids several decades later and it was still there. I emailed the Historical Society and they were able to dig up some census info on the decadent. The staff I corresponded with indicated there are several old graves around the City.

If anyone wants to see it I’m Pretty sure it’s 3435 SE main or it might be 3534 but it’s just a couple blocks east on main.

Check the BLM donation land claim records websites, the name or plot or both may be on there given this time frame

Marks Friedman was a shoemaker who was born in Germany. The city directory of 1877 shows him living at the NW corner of Fourth and Columbia. I tried PastPortland.com but it couldn't come up with the current address. In 1900 his widow Henrietta was living at 930 SW Salmon Street. She died in 1908.
My guess is that one of his children bought him a better monument at some point and recycled the old headstone as a stepping stone. It's not unusual for old headstones or those with mistakes to be recycled, even today. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/15696262/marks-friedman
