Oligarchs and wealthy conservatives told people to not believe established science and data because they wanted to siphon more money away from people before society collapsed. They hope this will enable them to protect themselves from the worst of it.
They did this by bundling their climate denial with bigotry and it worked super well on people who wanted permission to hate.
The people who don’t understand and are really upset are those ones who turned down the denial/bigotry bundle.

2
u/HillInTheDistance 20h ago
They're putting a whole lot of that money into bunkers in places where the scientists they pay predict the least ammount of environmental damage. Just in case no one cleans up their mess.
But they are expecting someone to clean up the mess. They know what theyre doing ain't sustainable, but right now, it either makes them money, or is predicted to make themoney in the future, so they keep doing what they're doing until it ain't profitable no more, or someone actively stops them.
And if no one manages to stop them, if irreversible damagae is done before the ride's over, they'll point fingers.
They'll blame everyone else for not working hard enough to make something profitable that also saves the world, which they could have invested in instead.
Or they'll blame everyone else for not using what they made, to save the world.
And they'll retreat to their bunkers, which will be about the last piece of actual wealth left in the world. And they'll cut off a slice for whoever is willing to shoot the rest of us.
If they're lucky, the last bastion of humanity will be the five hundred richest and their five thousand favorite slaves in the last inhabitable part of the world.
And they'll live a relatively easy life there until they decide to call it quits.
2
u/NixtRDT 19h ago
It’s all one big prisoner’s dilemma. No single company or single individual is incentivized to change their behavior.
What’s funny is we have an example in recent history of humanity working collectively to solve a global problem: banning CFCs to let the ozone layer repair itself.
We would need nations to take that same kind of collective action again, and you would hope an event like what just happened in Nepal could be a catalyst. We have to move beyond treaties and start passing laws with real teeth and consequences.

In the past its always been possible for the masses to overthrow the elite by sheer force of numbers. But by the time our society is ready for its storming of the Bastille moment it will be technologically impossible to do it.
2
u/Andrew-Cohen 23h ago
Funny thing like an electric magnetic pulse erases all sorts of data. Possible to do so without setting off a nke hopefully.
2
u/Inside-Example-7010 23h ago
all you need to counter an emp is a sensor at a distance that picks it up and tells everything behind it to shut off for the next second or whatever.
We are still at the point where guerilla warfare can beat the military industrial complex. We saw it in afganistan and we are seeing it in Iran with shahaed drones as well.
But one day i think the elites of that time will be impervious to such technology then we will end up with some Dune tier bloodlines. Probably 40000 years from now House Musk is begging the emperor to let him have Arakus.
2
u/Andrew-Cohen 23h ago
EMP travels at the speed of light. That means it travels a mile in .0003 seconds. I’ll let you think that one over for a bit.
1
u/Inside-Example-7010 23h ago
you use a fiber optic connection which transmits light not electricity. Fiber is impervious to EMP.
1
u/Andrew-Cohen 23h ago
So one tiny part of the machine is impervious to it. Genius idea.
2
u/Inside-Example-7010 23h ago
you dont have a very engineering inclined mind i take it?
The sensor is external. Its processor is inside a Faraday cage. The connection between the 2 is fiber optic. The connection from processor to general systems is fiber.
Theres your anti EMP sensor. it costs about 5 bucks.

It won’t make it worse, it’ll just make it sooner. That’s why you’re not hearing the experts - they’re tired of saying we have X amount of time to prevent this catastrophe we can clearly see coming and the world ignores them. We’re realistically past the heating point of no return.

u/Embarrassed_Use_7206 21h ago
Yeah, data centers are the least of our problems. First of all, coal has to go, like yesterday was late. We need to replace as much power generation with renewables as possible. Then meat production needs to go way down in hand with less food waste, and then we need to actively collect carbon. The whole rest of the equation almost does not matter. If you don't believe it, look up the numbers on greenhouse gas emmiters by source or industry.
2
u/Expensive-Willow-570 21h ago

The warming that’s baked in can always get worse from more greenhouse gases. If we continue outputting tons of co2 per person it will get worse and worse and worse. Unless humanity is extinct we can always make it warmer.
2
u/Stunning-Pen-2412 1d ago

Sadly, it's human nature. Many of us have resources we do not absolutely need, that could be instead used to literally save other people's lives, demonstrably, yet instead we use those resources for ourselves and the ones we love. For many, and perhaps most people, the lives of unknown others simply are not as real as our own.
Yes, it totally sucks that tens, hundreds, thousands, millions of other people are suffering and dying, but the reality is that unless they are someone close enough to you that their plight directly impacts your life, it's not going to mean nearly as much as the fact that your second cousin, who you haven't seen in more than ten years, but you had great fun together at family cook-outs when your were 12, got killed in a car accient last week. You will totally drive three hours to their funeral next week, but you will not send $50 to the Against Malaria Foundation and save half a dozen children's lives. It's one of those things that us comfortable middle class people never talk about.
I am as guilty of it as anyone. I could profoundly improve and even save many people's lives if it was a higher priority for me, but instead I'm making sure my nieces and nephews won't have to care for me as I get old. Yes, of course it's not black and white, there's a very broad gradient here, but the fact is that most of us who could do more choose not to do so.

Global shipping accounts for about 3% of emissions ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20xxv22wl9o ), energy production accounts for 27% to 33%.
Transport as a whole accounts for 15%, food production is 17%, industry is 20%.
Also worth remembering that data centres are a massively growing sector, so they're absolutely something we should be worried about.

Remember September 11, when a group of Saudi nationals murdered thousands of Americans? Immediately after, we should have started a new Manhattan Project to transition to renewable energy, so we could tell the Saudis to get bent. Instead, what did we do? We started buying the largest and most gas-guzzling SUVs ever brought to market. We did the exact opposite of what we should’ve done. And we do that now in almost every situation, especially since the only fiscal policy of this government is to give billionaires everything they want.

It’s easy to understand when those at the top with money can easily group together for a couple common goals, especially if it means perpetuating their rule
Anyone not at the top will never band together over any common goal without the group being co-opted or splinter-issues being the only thing the loudest of the group complains about, thus destroying any chance of rising against the top in any meaningful way
The larger the population gets the worse this problem becomes, not sure how more people don’t see this

Top 15 Countries by Total GHG Emissions (2023, t CO₂eq) World Population Review
| Rank | Country | Total GHG Emissions | Per Capita (t CO₂eq) | % of World |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | China | 15.9B | 11.11 | 30.1% |
| 2 | United States | 6.0B | 17.61 | 11.25% |

You really believe that?
Then you wouldn't have liked this. 😂🤣😂
“Geological evidence suggests that the Earth endured several severe ice ages early in its history.
The longest and most severe was between 2.3 and 2.4 billion years ago, and lasted around 70 million years.
Throughout this period, the entire Earth was probably covered in ice, possibly to a depth of 1 km (0.6 mile).
During the Last Glacial Maximum (Iceage) that ended 20,000 years ago, the hydrological cycle was so effectively interrupted on a planetary scale that the ocean’s sea levels dropped dramatically by at least 100 meters.
This period began approximately 80,000 years earlier”.

Stopping the entire globe from warming is more than all of the billionaires combined are capable of handling. They can’t make the 99% stop using plastic, stop driving cars, stop traveling, or grow their own food, made their own reusable clothes, shoes, eating utensils. The problem lies with the 99% and adopting a culture of single use living within society. They don’t force us to eat meat from their factories, the produce from their shelves, the clothes from their stores. We chose, and we do so because it is easier than growing your own food, and stitching your own shirt.

Someone explain the ice caps to me in better detail for the argument of global warming. Icebergs are mostly underwater. And ice has more volume than water. So with them all melting..... that = less volume. So how does that = water rising when there is less overall volume. The sea levels should be dropping. Genuine question. Any degradation or inability to just stick to topic at hand will get you ignored.

u/Big_Humor1558 1d ago
Plenty of glaciers are located on land, so when that ice melts, the liquid is added to the oceans, raising the level. Oceans up by over 8 inches/ 21 cm since 1880.

2
u/Jigsawsupport 19h ago
Ok in two parts.
1 The small bit there is an awful lot of ice on land, for instance all the ice on antartica, all the ice on Greenland.
2 The big bit, most of the increase is due to thermal expansion, if you take say 500ml of water and measure it at 1C it will be 500ml.
If you then take that same glass of water and measure it at around 90c you will find you have 8ml more water.
Now if we take a body of water as massive as the oceans and heat it a few C then you can understand the increase.

This seems like a good line of questioning to take to a chatbot. You’re coming off a bit condescending here and you’re probably mainly going to get condescending responses from real people. Personally, I had to take a step back and rewrite my eli5 response which went something along the lines of “ice go drip drip etc”
Water expands when it freezes yes, but it’s also a solid which doesn’t flow downhill or fit the container it’s in. Once it melts it can only fill up the lowest point which causes sea level rise.

I mean it's literally a flood area. It's been flooded that Way over and over and over and over and over and over and will continue to over and over.
I'm not saying global warning is a hoax but when flood areas flood let's not lose our shit

Data centers are owned by white people, and Nepal is not white people. Its very easy to understand.

The environment is fucked to be sure, but this event seems to be the result of a landslide per many reports.

People don't want facts; they want someone to blame (as long as it's not the person in the mirror).
1% of worldwide fossil fuel usages goes to data centers. And most of that goes to non-AI uses like Reddit, which people seemed perfectly all right with. You didn't hear people blaming data centers for anything until the 2020s AI boom, and now suddenly 0.4% of fossil fuels usage is going to be what's destroying the world, not their long commutes, not their choosing to eat meat instead of veggies, not their far-flung vacations, not the crap their ship in from China, and not their Internet addictions. No, it's the thing that they were against anyway.

Well considering this is an industrial accident caused by the Chinese that has nothing to do with global warming, I suggest telling the Chinese not to build just below a glacier...

It's easy to understand, you just need to ask yourself how many billionaires died in the flood?
We have hundreds of years of human history to tell us all that the wealthy will put up with any amount of death and disaster as long as they are not personally impacted.
