Work in Progress Advice on fur texture?

Hey guys. We just lost our tuxedo boy and I’m doing a portrait of him for my fiancée. I really want to do him justice, so I was hoping to get some advice on creating a good texture. Here’s what I have so far. This is on birch btw. Thank you in advance!

I’m sorry for your loss; I’m not the best teacher and I’m unsure if this would help but here’s my experience that hopefully makes sense;
I use a soft back and forth gliding motion for fur, certain sections are longer “hairs” then others, I try to envision how the fur would have moved or sat. You seem to have a great moment so far. I like going back over the darker parts with more fur strokes to really bring out texture, and then I go in with a really low heat setting and do the lighter sections that burn back into the dark so it “melds” together. I can try and comment some of my last memorial portrait pictures to reference that will maybe show what I’m talking about
