RTD Challenge #68 || Lost Isles

A small, 3,084m track located in northern West Virginia. It was constructed in 1984 and was renovated in 2008, adding new extensions that expanded the uses of the track. This renovation also included widening the circuit from 9m to 12m all around, with the intention of growing the circuit's appeal to a wider variety of regional championships.

Alongside your regular track days, this circuit is also visited by a handful of regional SCCA events such as SRF's, Formula Ford, B-Spec, etc. Its final section of turns is also often used for open drifting days, and different layouts can be combined for time attack events.

Recently came across some old footage of the Dun Laoghaire Grand Prix, so I wanted to chart it out and share it here. It's a strange design

For a little explanation, Dun Laoghaire is a town south of Dublin, Ireland. It's mostly been absorbed into the city at this point, but in the 80's, for whatever reason, the town decided to hold a race. They had Formula 2000 and some historic car racing from the footage I found.

It's a 0.92 mile long circuit with 9 turns. From the footage, it appears the finish line was before the sweeping turn on Cumberland Street, but I was unable to confirm the start line.

Turn 2 through Turn 4 is perhaps the most bizarre set of turns I've ever seen, where it turns onto a small residential street, before turning back onto Longford Road (the long winding back straight).

Most of the action seemed to occur at the turnoff to Clarence Street (the hairpin at the top right of frame). Most of the footage focused on that corner, especially the RTE news coverage of the event.

From what I know, this event only happened for one year. But from what the layout looked like, it's not a surprise. Hope this little tidbit of racing history interests you all.

Snetterton redesign to host F1 and MotoGP races, keeping a variety of Layouts to host other national and international events.

Hey guys! I’ve been a long time lurker and part time poster here on the sub, but always made with freehand pencil. I recently got a PC for gaming and thought about trying my hand at designing some tracks digitally.

My question is to those who make digital content, what programs do you use and if there are any tricks or hints as to go about this medium switch.

Thanks for any advice that you guys give out, and I look forward to starting new projects and sharing my results!

Officially announced by MotoGP and the South Australian Government. (Long time lurker, first time poster)

5.9 kms, 11 corners, 18-19 +- meters wide, approx 80 meters of elevation, FIA g1.

After a pretty long hiatus, I’ve came back on track designing. I might be done with this project at approx the end of september, tho it might be earlier or even later.

I think it’s between Daytona and Indy but it’s hard to decide.

A while ago I posted a rough draft for a Davidstow Revival to bring national motor racing back to Cornwall. It was roughly 7km long.

Since then I've altered the layout to shorten it and make it more interesting, taking inspiration from Silverstone's Brooklands and Luffield.

The current design allows for more parking space east of the track.

The corners are either named after nearby towns or villages, drivers that won some of the original races at Davidstow, and aircraft that could be found on the airfield during the second world war.

Coombs - after John Coombs who won Lotus' first f1 race here

Maar straight - after Leslie Maar who won the last grand prix here in 55, and went on to be an artist

Altarnun - a village East of the circuit, the only original corner name to stay

Parker bend - after F3 winner Don Parker

Tyrrell - after Ken Tyrrell, the most famous name to race at Davidstow

Henley straight - after Hawker Henley RAF 2 seaster bomber plane

Hudson - after Lockheed Hudson light bomber

Bradford - a village South of the circuit

Keybridge - another South village

Camelford - a village West

Connaught - most successfull cars at the original track

The short layout is for smaller events and car shows and follows the original layout with the addition of a couple chicanes.

The first one, Tower chicane, after the watch tower close to it.

The second one, Lotus chicane, after the car maker who's first race won was here, albeit a non championship one.

Following Donnington Park's failure to join the F1 calendar for the 2010 season West Sussex County Council saw an opportunity to bring investment into the county. It began to eye up a slot on the F1 calendar either joining as a second British race or aiming to replace Silverstone as the home of the British Grand Prix.
RAF Thorney was chosen as a site with the initial vision being to base the circuit on the airfield's perimeter road and runways in a similar manner to Silverstone however such a track could not be made safe, especially with the proximity to the army base on the peninsula. To help fix the design for formula one and secure greater investor interest Herman Tilke was brought on to redesign the circuit into its current layout. The track would feature all of Tilke's hallmarks such as two long straights connected by a heavy breaking zone, a snail corner and an inferior clone of Istanbul Park turn 8.
In negotiations with the MOD to lease the site for the track the West Sussex Council and its investors agreed to front the cost for an alternative road to West Thorney and the relocation of the Royal Artillery Equestrian Center in exchange for the MOD fronting a portion of the cost of construction and maintenance. The MOD also presented restrictions on the number of weekends a year the circuit could be used for public racing along with a limit on track days for the purpose of decreasing load on the islands infrastructure and security along with concerns over noise pollution (Which were also partially mitigated through the construction of concrete walls where possible).

Construction too was hampered by ballooning costs and setbacks due to the need to repave large portions of the old runway. By the time the circuit was fit for purpose in 2017 F1 had been in decline for some time and the circuit did not posses the capital to host. Instead the circuit would become an occasional host for feeder series or national series. The circuit's flat and derivative layout made the circuit fairly uninteresting to drive and watch. However the track was somewhat redeemed by its often unpredictable weather being situated on the coast.

The circuit's short circuit was used for the allotted number of track days with the remainder of its time was used for MOD vehicle training, primarily for motorcycles.

The Circuit's corner names were primarily given to honor the sites military heritage with the exception of the Cambell straight, named after Donald Cambell a prolific breaker of land and water speed records who's nephew Don Wales had used the site to attempt a speed record in 2009. Golf Club meanwhile was named for its shape.

So yeah I don't necessarily expect this track to be all that, Thorney has been a doodle site for me for a while and the only time I managed to make something remotely drivable of it it became possibly the biggest Tilkedrome to ever Tilkedrome. At least it let me come up with some admittedly very silly lore.

I'm always happy to get some feedback for where this can be improved or general things for future designs.

These Are My Diecast Tracks. Which One Is Your Favorite?

Built in 2016 on the grounds of the Fulford Golf Club just south of the city of York, Yorkshire Circuit stands as one of the rising race tracks of the decade.

The first sector is technical with T3 being the main corner of the sector. Sector 2 is like the first one, though with a few elevation changes as T5 is a slight uphill, while the Laguna Seca-inspired T7 and 8 go down quite a significant drop. Finally, the third sector consists of straights into the heavy braking zones of T13 and T15.

Main series to be hosted on this track include GT cars, British F2, F3 and F4.

Haven’t posted in this thing in a while and also haven’t really done race track designs. I got bored and decided to draw this up. Circuit size similar to Magny Cours to Jerez and is most suitable for Open Wheel cars and Touring Masters cars. Also has some layouts for MOTO GP.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Conceived in late 1969 by the 9th Duke of Richmond, Kennel Hill Circuit was built as a grander counterpart to the nearby flat airfield circuit, which closed to active racing in 1966 due to rising speeds and safety concerns, intended to bring top-tier international motor racing back to West Sussex in the 1970s. Carved directly into the undulating South Downs on the Goodwood Estate, the 4.4 kilometer track took its name from the adjacent 18th-century Duke’s Hounds kennels. When the venue opened in 1972, drivers instantly liked and enjoyed the circuit.

Originally, the circuit was meant to be even faster than it eventually turned out to be, but due to a planning issue with the property line, the original layout didn't fit. The remains of the original plan can still be seen in the runoff of turn 3. However, the track's dramatic natural topography also presented severe challenges. During the 1975 Sussex 1000km, heavy downpours turned the fast and steep right hander of turn 8 into a river of mud washing down from the hills. After three sports prototypes aquaplaned off the track into the barriers on consecutive laps, marshals famously resorted to hand-sweeping the compression with yard brooms during a safety car period.

The circuit reached its competitive end during the 1979 Goodwood International Trophy, a non-championship Formula 1 event. With the era's new ground-effect cars pulling massive G-forces through turns 7 and 8, now named "The Hill", the sheer compression forces regularly scraped side skirts onto the tarmac, leading to spectacular spark shows. Refusing to gut the track's fast, sweeping nature with artificial chicanes as safety regulations tightened in the late 70s and early 80s, the estate ultimately chose to preserve the original layout intact. Today, while modern top-tier racing has moved away, Kennel Hill operates as an exclusive testing ground and the crown jewel for high-speed vintage demonstrations, keeping its uncompromising 1970s soul entirely intact.
