About one year after its market debut in China, the Model Y L – the six-seat flagship SUV produced at Tesla‘s Shanghai Gigafactory – is facing a wave of criticism from owners reporting “collapsing” of the rear wheels. The issue has gained traction on social media, with many users claiming the defect is a systemic batch failure rather than isolated incidents.

According to numerous owner testimonials quoted by Sina, the gap between the rear wheel arch and the tyre narrows drastically after long-distance travel or when the vehicle is fully loaded. In severe cases, owners report that the clearance becomes so small that “not even a single finger” can fit into the gap.

The reported failures vary by mileage. One owner from Hebei province reported a severe collapse after 9,000 km during a fully loaded trip to Tibet. Another owner in Shanghai, who has driven nearly 30,000 km since October 2025, noted that the rear wheel gap shrank to the width of only two fingers, leading to increased chassis swaying and a higher risk of scraping the underbody.

Beyond the visible sagging, owners are reporting consequential damage. The suspension drop alters the wheel alignment, causing abnormal wear on the inside of the tyres. Some owners claim their tyres have already worn down to the safety limit. While Tesla replaces the springs for free under warranty, the cost of replacing the prematurely worn tyres must be borne by the owners.

Tesla China has not issued a public statement, and customer service representatives have simply advised affected owners to book appointments at service centres for inspection.

Have a Juniper, have had since March with no issues. Until yesterday when my phone key has started to disconnect after pairing, maybe 10-15mins later. Not sure what’s happening as it was fine before this. Anyone else have this happen? I’ve done everything that the internet suggests, nothing is working.

Yes I would rather pay the extra 60$ just to avoid tesla stupid insurance random rate increases. I am a grown ass adult and shouldn't be penalized because I go out late at night for a snack. Shot my rates right up for nothing. No one is even on the road at night in my area. Also i just got out of the hospital and needed something from the store and haven't drove much all month. How is that more risky when accidents happen more during rush hour? I would rather pay more than let tesla play games.

It is getting close to fall and I don’t want to buy a 2026 model year just in case I have to sell it within the next two years.

Despite this enthusiasm, however, MacGillivray plans to shut the chargers on Oct. 25, at the end of a billing cycle and after most of the leaf-peeping traffic has come through town. The electric bill has been too high. Tesla is recalling 2,975,910 vehicles in China after the country’s market regulator determined that its emergency door release is too hard to find and operate in a crash.

It’s Tesla’s largest-ever recall in China, and it lands as the automaker’s door design faces mounting legal and regulatory pressure on two continents. Several other automakers who followed Tesla into similarly designed door releases have also issued similar recalls.

What the recall covers

According to a filing with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall covers 973,156 domestically built Model 3s, 1,956,713 domestically built Model Ys, 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 imported Model Xs, and 2,123 imported Model Ss.

The regulator’s concern isn’t the flush exterior handles that Tesla popularized. It’s the interior emergency mechanical release — the manual backup that lets occupants open a door when the car loses power.

Tesla filed the recall plan under China’s Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products. The remedy is not a hardware change to the door mechanism. Instead, Tesla will add warning labels and push an over-the-air software update that changes how the windows lower to aid escape.
