Commonly Asked Questions - PLEASE READ
Below are the most common “issues” that are posted here. Please refrain from submitting posts that fall under these categories unless you’re pretty sure your defect falls significantly outside of a reasonable margin. Thank you!
- The Classic Moc’s toe is first glued and then stitched together. It’s normal for the seam to split open a bit, particularly where the vamp flexes. The stitches are holding it together.
- A little gap along the welt is fine. Again, the stitches are doing the work. Wedge soles have a thin slip sole that’s stitched to the boot and then the outsole is cemented to it. It’s not going anywhere.
- Your speed hooks aren’t going to chew through your tongue. They’ll dig in to a certain point and the just kinda stop. Use kilties if you insist, but I’ve got pairs over ten years old and the wear on the tongue barely looks different than it did after a few weeks.
- Leather used to be alive. Just like us, there will be flaws, veins, scars, and stretch marks. They’ll try to use less uniform cuts where cosmetic issues are less visible, like the inside quarters, but not every flaw can be seen until the boot has flexed.
- You’re probably over-conditioning. Unless you’re routinely using them in extreme conditions, less is more. Once or twice a year. However, you should brush your boots regularly, this will not help only remove dust and dirt, it will redistribute the oils already in the leather and prevent deep cracks from forming.
You WILL scuff and scratch your boots, they WILL crease, they WILL get dirty. They’ll also be FINE. Embrace patina, that’s what makes them YOUR boots.
We don’t wanna see your footbeds! Fit is subjective and a picture of your imprint only two dimensions of a 3D shape. Your boot shouldnt cause actual pain. A little discomfort isnt unusual for the first few days. Your boots should feel like they’re giving your foot a firm handshake (footshake?). If they feel like they fit, they probably fit.

CRT Rangers - first clean and buff..
I’ve had these a couple years now. Mostly used as a casual boot around town, hanging out with friends, nothing hard use. I do wear them to work a couple few times a month in a hospital. I think the patina is coming along nicely. They did darken a smidge after bick 4 and some neutral polish, but they were never the brightest of CRTs compared so some I’ve seen.
Looking forward to much more wear in the future as they’ve broken in nicely!

North Star Leather belts Alpine Portage and Black Klondike
A few days ago I posted about my new Green Kangatan Moc Toes and compared the leather with my Apline Portage Iron Rangers. nstarleather chimed in and mentioned that both are the same leather only under a different name. And in my case obviusly different batches. Asked about it he also mentioned that he had some Alpine Portage leather for belts left. I also had my eyes on the black Klondike ever since I bought my first two belts from North Star Leather so I got in contact and placed an order. These belts are fantastic, the best I ever had. From placing the order to unpacking them here in Germany took less then two weeks. Including shipping for two belts, the German VAT at 19% plus additional fees from DHL they are stil cheaper then Redwing belts bought in the shop here. And the later can't hold a candle to these in terms of quality. Thanks to North Star Leather for outstanding service and craftsmanship.

Engineers ⚙️
I’m wearing them in the office though, so maybe they should be called “Office Workers” instead 🤔

For those who have a pair of the moctoe oxfords how do y’all like em?
Been wanting to get something different. I have a pair of iron rangers and i adore them, been wearing em every day since the start of the year. I was just wondering for those who have these what y’all think and how does it compare.

Am I being picky?
I got these last week and this is kind of driving me nuts. The part of the shoes with the red arrow was sewn on kind of crooked. $250 shoes I feel like should not have a defect like this. I get they’re handmade though.

Got my Iron Ranger Amber 8111 from Berkeley
Just received my pair of 8111 from Berkeley Supply.
I am impressed. Paid nearly half price at $185.
I see a few minor scuffs which don’t bother me at all, they will have way more after one day.
Maybe a little bit of excess glue where the welt ends on one.
This was a score and I can recommend Berkeley highly.

IR 8111 one month of wear
Decided to take a progress pic of my IRs that I bought back in late July. They are definitely becoming my own and everyday they feel better. Couldn’t be more happy with them. I genuinely stare at them before I go to bed - I’m sure I’m not the only one :)

eBay Score - 8087 Slate Muleskinner
$215 all in - not bad for a discontinued IR. Tag shows made October 2022, and Seller found 'em at an estate sale. Remarkably good condition...now off to the cobbler for a midsole and resole.

Torn between Blacksmith and Berkman for Next Pair
Already own a pair of Iron Rangers in Amber.
I want to mix it up a bit and either purchase Beckman in Cigar or Blacksmith in Black Prairie.
Ideally this would be something I could wear to the office (very occasionally) or date night. I work for a Media Agency, it's pretty business casual - no suits. I can easily get away with wearing sneakers as well, but would like something I can also wear to client meetings.
What would y'all recommend?
In terms of sizing I'm seeing people advise .5 size up from my Iron Rangers. Same true for Blacksmith? Or go with same size as my IRs?

Great closet addition
Found this guy for $10 at Walmart in the gun isle. Extremely helpful being able to monitor the humidity in there.

What’s the move here?
Iron Rangers molded to my foot over about five years. Want to repair them but don’t want to lose how perfectly I’ve broken them in. Suggestions?

Boots on the same last as an Iron Ranger.
Does redwing make any other boots on the same last as the iron ranger?

Left boot creasing
from what i am researching this is supposed to be normal as long as it doesn’t pinch your feet, they feel fine but I don’t like how it looks. can cedar shoe trees fix?

What are these worth?
I’m thinking about letting go of these but I honestly can’t put a price around the first 2.
- Spirit Lakes Indian Motorcycle collab. They have scuffs from actual motorcycle riding on an Indian!
- Engineer Boots Indian Motorcycle collab.
- Just a pair of factory second 877s.
All are size 9. I wouldn’t be selling them if it wasn’t for the fact that I no longer fit in them ever since I realized I need arch support insoles. Otherwise they still fit me haha. I’ve had them since 2020.
