Hey everyone, you’ve probably seen them on Reddit, TikTok or Instagram: "Munchkin cats." They look like the feline version of a Corgi or Dachshund, with normal-sized bodies but incredibly short, stubby legs. While people often flood the comments calling them "cute" or "adorable," the reality behind these cats is anything but sweet. Here is a breakdown of what a Munchkin cat actually is, and why you should never buy one from a breeder.
🧬 What Actually Is a Munchkin Cat?Munchkin cats are not a natural, healthy breed. Their short legs are the result of a genetic mutation called chondrodysplasia (a form of dwarfism). This mutation prevents their leg bones from growing to a normal length. Because the gene is dynamic and lethal, breeding two short-legged Munchkins together results in a high percentage of kittens dying in the womb. To get a living litter, breeders have to cross short-legged cats with normal-legged cats.
🛑 The Severe Health Consequences
Cats are designed to jump, climb, and pounce. Munchkin cats are structurally broken from birth, leading to several painful, lifelong health issues:
Early-Onset Osteoarthritis: Because their limbs are abnormally short, their joints bear uneven, heavy stress. This leads to painful joint degeneration very early in life.
Lordosis: This is a spinal deformity where the muscles grow too short, forcing the spine to curve heavily inward. It causes chronic pain and limits mobility.
Pectus Excavatum: A birth defect where the breastbone sinks inward. This compresses their heart and lungs, making it difficult for them to breathe or exercise.
Severe Mobility Restrictions: They cannot jump to high surfaces or defend themselves like normal cats.
💸 The Financial and Ethical Nightmare. Buying a Munchkin cat from a breeder usually costs anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500. When you pay that money, you are directly funding an industry that intentionally breeds deformed, suffering animals for human aesthetic pleasure. Major veterinary and welfare organizations worldwide—including the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and the Humane Society—condemn the breeding of Munchkin cats as unethical. Furthermore, the initial price tag is just the beginning. The lifetime veterinary bills for specialized joint care, pain management, and spinal treatments can easily cost thousands of extra dollars.
🐾 What You Should Do Instead
If you absolutely love the look or personality of these cats, do not buy them from a breeder. Instead, look into breed-specific rescues or local animal shelters. Munchkin cats do occasionally end up in shelters when owners realize they cannot afford their medical bills. Adopting a rescue saves a life and gives a home to a cat in need without financially supporting an unethical breeding market. Let’s stop normalizing genetic deformities for "clout" and start prioritizing animal welfare.

You are allowed to post them outside of this thread, but the title must be phrased as though a cat wrote it in that case. This one is for videos of cats or that cats like to watch that aren't phrased as though the viewer posted it.

Alright, so I'd just wrapped up a busy workday, and decided to experiment with some decaffeinated coffee - a blind taste test of French press and moka pot.
I walked into the living room and sat down on the sofa with my two cups, rested them on the coasters, and noticed that this cat had opened reddit, opened the "create" function, and written this topic heading.
He then walked up to me, walked across my lap, and lay down like this - with one foot in my lap, but his entire back to me. Ready for the drama photoshoot.
I submitted it to r/catsbeingdramatic, as I'd assumed it to be his intended sub for submission; however, a kindly fellow cat-redditor informed me that this sub had a higher probability of being his intention.

I found the perfect sunny spot and I’m not moving anytime soon. ☀️🐾 What’s your favorite place to nap?

Dear fellow felines,
one of my humans quite often leave for two, or three days at a time and I'm not happy about it.
1.) He doesn't even ask for my permission.
2.) He locks me out of my bed room to pack his bag/suitcase.
3.) He doesn't bring me treats, when he returns.
How can I make my human change his behaviour (violance isn't an option, as I believe in humane treatment of humans)?
What's most important to me is that he doesn't lock me out of MY bed room. Not only shouldn't my humans lock me out of any of the rooms in MY house, they should also tolerate me supervising them while packing their bags/suitcases.
Just thinking about them not packing a toy, or a picture of me, not to mention me not rolling around in the suitcase and on their clothes to mark the items and therefore my humans as my property makes my eyes water.
I need advice asap, as my human got his suitcase out of the closet this morning.
Thanks a lot.

Pretty much the post header. I’m looking for some pics of your cat’s face. I’m a designer, and I’d love to feature some cat faces in my thing. I can DM you personally once your cat is used so you can take a look.
I used my sister’s cat’s face in my tool, and she suggested I ask other cat owners if they’d like to have their cats featured too.
To be specific, I’d need a clear, full, detailed photo of your cat’s face so I can design it properly.
For more details, u can go to by bio, its there
