First Time Owner- Need Help!!

I just got a baby/juvenile bearded dragon and I have been researching a lot in order to take good care of him, but I'm not sure if I'm doing this right.

For context, I got him for free at the pet store (because the tip of his tail was missing) and he is currently in a 40 gallon enclosure which I will upgrade once he reaches a year old. He has 4 hides (2 under basking rock, 1 under wood bridge, and 1 where the basking rock and hammock touch) but he hasn't used them much.

I added a picture of his enclosure because I need some help. I recognize that it isn't good, which is why I'm here. I want to make sure he has the best life he can. I'm going to add some more sticks soon and eventually substrate once he is a bit older. I also plan to add a foam background for him to climb on.

He also keeps glass surfing on one side of the enclosure and idk why. I've handled him twice he is very anxious so I'm going to give him more time to adjust.

TLDR: Need advice on enclosure, glass surfing, and handling for baby beardie.

Help

So I’ve had this tank for two years (long story) and I finally decided that I should use it. How can I make it better? I was thinking of throwing away the dirt and mix sand because it’s the same one I had from two years ago 💀 what reptile could I possibly have here? I’d appreciate any advice (I do have the lights and the water mister but it’s in a box currently)

As of right now I just want to make the tank look better and do research and then decide where to get a reptile.

Reptile safe sculptures?

Hey gang! I'm currently early in the research process for my first lizard tank, currently leaning towards a gargoyle gecko. Because I'm crafty and really enjoy designing habitats for my tank friends (I've got a couple of aquariums), I wanted to make my own hardscape. Specifically, I wanted to build a wizards's tower in my gargoyle habitat with a few different open areas for plants and hides.

My question is, have any of you done large DIY reptile decorations before, and if so, what materials have you used? I've heard good things about polymer clay, but I'd be worried about the structure getting too heavy, so I've been leaning toward foam clay and then coating with an acrylic or silicone sealant? Worst case, I could always use a combination of spray foam and styrofoam on a plastic or floral wire base, but that seems like it could get super unweildy pretty quickly. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

DHP wattage for 4x2x4 enclosure?

I’m working on the final touches for this 4x2x4 zen habitats enclosure for my Solomon island tree boa. I plan on covering most of the mesh top with a pvc board and I am trying to figure out what heat source to use that can provide a good heat gradient across the whole enclosure. I’ve seen most people say that RHPs aren’t good for tall enclosures so I was think about going with a deep heat projector but I can’t find much information on what wattage I should get. Would an 80 watt be enough to heat this? Is there a better option for this size of enclosure?

Came across this multi-level setup and really liked how they made use of the vertical space.

What do you guys think of this kind of setup?

question about backgrounds

I have some foamboard structures, do i need to completely cover the back of the tank with silicone before i create a full sprayfoam background? some sources say sprayfoam will peel off without, some say its fine. im making a longterm arid setup and want whichever is gonna last the absolute longest,

Silicone(?) -> sprayfoam+xps structures -> clay (for texture and sculpting rocky formations)
are there any issues with this pipeline? do i need to add or remove steps?

Building advice

Hello, my greek tortoise has finally grown large enough where she needs more space, and I wanted to treat her with a nice new one that I built.

I was just wondering if any of ya'll have any tips. Best kind of wood, wood sealers/stains, if bioactive is a good choice, etc. I'll include inspiration photos of what I'm aiming to make. My partner suggested finding an old dresser and just repurposing it, but I'm worried about the possibility of toxins or fumes.

Any advice is welcome! And, here is a picture of my baby girl 💚
